Trying to write a cohesive story with a mess of timeline that is Overwatch is the bane of my existence. How old is Mccree suppose to be?? Why am I getting three different numbers??

ok but like when did self-sacrifice become synonymous with death? writers seem to have forgotten that people can make personal sacrifices for the greater good without giving their lives. plots about self-sacrifice and selflessness don’t always have to end in death. suffering doesn’t have to be mourning. you can create drama and emotional depth on your show without killing everyone. learn to explore the meaning of living rather than dying

me, every single time i get a kudos on ao3: someone liked my writing. one real irl human being read something i wrote and enjoyed it. they thought it was good enough to read to the end and click the button. an actual person. they liked it.

the more “edit these words out of your writing” posts i read, the more i’m convinced that they mean well, but they kind of miss the reason why some people’s writing seems wordy in the first place

[obligatory disclaimer: if a wordy writing style is your artistic vision, go forth, have fun. i don’t want to tell you how to write, no matter how much i sound like it. but for the people who do intentionally want to pare their style down, i hope they’re not making themselves miserable. writing is hard enough as it is.]

This year, I want you to be unapologetic when you create.

Don’t apologize for your writing, drawing, music, designs, films, sculptures, cosplays, knitting, sewing, cooking, and anything else I might’ve missed.

Don’t apologize for the quality.

Stop being afraid of what you can accomplish. You might think you can do so much better, well guess what? You will. You’re always improving. But if you start to apologize for the best you can do at this moment, then you might restrain yourself, stop yourself from taking risks that will help you.

I know this is a hard thing to stop. I do it all the time. When I submit art to people that I’m not so confident about, I’ll apologize in advance.

This year, I challenge you, and myself, to stop doing it.

“I would have preferred this writer explore these ideas” is an opinion. “This writer has trouble with certain aspects of story-telling” is a criticism.
