Penny clapped her hands together once, and smiled at him.
“My name is Penny. It’s nice to meet you, and thank you so much for your help. I really appreciate it.”
Penny took some of his snow gear off the couch.
“I’ll put your things over here, so they can dry a bit before you leave.” She smiled before turning around, and going back to the materials.
She made it back in time to hear the comment he made about finding a stud. Penny let out a loud laugh, and chuckled, lightly hitting his arm a little bit.
“That’s funny! I liked that.”
She gave another titter and half-smiled at him before stepping over to the pile of wood.
“What should we start with first?”
She wanted to ask him if he had ever put up shelves before, but figured it wouldn’t matter. He would be doing a better job at making them stay straight and up than she had.
Shelves | Bobby & Penny
penny-wiggins:
Penny held in laughter, and put her hand up to her mouth, eyebrows raised in amusement.
“5 year plan? They’re only shelves. As long as they can stay straight and hold up my movies, books, and other shit, they will be just fine.” She walked behind him to grab her journal and a pencil, ripping a page out of her book.
Drawing a quick picture, she handed him the sheet.
“This is the design I want. Kind of simple and clean. Just two columns of shelves up on the wall.” She fanned out her fingers, and pointed her hand towards the wall as she said this. Penny took the hammer and walked over to the pile of materials sitting on the floor. There were only a couple holes in the wall from her past attempts, but she didn’t pay them any mind.
“I went to the store, and the guy helped me get all this stuff. Hammer, screws, wooden planks, tape measurer, and that thing over there.” She motioned to a square gadget sitting on the side, untouched since she bought it.
“I don’t know what it is, but the guy said I would need it. I don’t know.”
Bobby was like totally serious. But he was used to people laughing when he was serious. He just assumed he was just a funny guy without trying. Weird that they didn’t normally laugh when he was trying to be funny.
“Right, sure. I’m just saying, this thing’s got dreams and aspirations.” He patted the planks of wood before looking at her sketch. Simple. Not like totally terrible. He could totally do this or whatever. “Sure. Cool.”
He scratched his head slightly as he laid out the planks a bit for this like mystery girl he had no idea who she was–Oh, yeah. “Oh, uh, I’m Bobby by the way. You should probably like know the name of your helper.” He looked back at her briefly before shrugging some of his snow gear off onto a sofa.
“Looks like that thing worked though. Found yourself a stud with it.” He grinned proudly at himself.

Penny smiled at the back of him.
“Cheap. That’s basically my theme when it comes to decorating.”
She walked over to him, and stood by his side, looking over the items in the store. The paintings really didn’t feature anything she was interested in, or anything she wanted to put on her walls. They all seemed to be of old-fashioned flowers and cottages. She was about to look past the lot when Penny noticed something bright and beautiful in the pile. She hurried over to the stack of paintings on the floor, and drew out the medium-sized painting.
“Look at this one!” She called out to Barrell, holding it out in front of her, and turning it around, grinning at him. The painting followed the look of Roy Lichtenstein’s 1960 pop art artwork. It was obvious that someone had painted it themselves, but Penny was still drawn to the artwork.
“I’m thinking about getting this. For only $5, it’s a steal.”

It made Penny smile when Wendy asked what she would like for dinner. She couldn’t remember a time when someone had made her food, let alone when she had made her own self dinner. She wasn’t much of a cook, and didn’t have a chance to learn many culinary skills while living at the foster care center. Most of their dinners were either frozen dinners in bulk, or donated by people who had leftovers. Even the leftovers were not homemade, but usually from a get-together or party someone had.
“I’m not sure. Anything homemade is great. Man, I don’t remember a time when I had homestyle cooking. We had a lot of frozen dinners at the foster care center. They were good, but nothing like making something. Ya know?”
Penny walked over to the kitchen and opened a cupboard, peering inside.
“I have food here, but I’m not sure what you’d want to make.” She squinted a moment and looked over her shoulder at Wendy.
“Whatever you decide to make, I’d love to help. Like a sous chef, or something like that.”

Oh, great. She was up first. I mean, sure, it was very respectful of her boss to have her go first, but Penny was not looking forward to this exercise.
Penny stepped forward towards Al. “I, uh, chose a Deadpool Funko Pop figurine.” She held up the box, and swiped her hand underneath in a Vanna-style wave.
“Funk Pop figurines are good for any ages, because, uh, they can either be a collector’s item left in the box, or the characters can be taken out and used. There’s also a lot of different types of characters you can choose from. Um, like superheroes, villains, indie comic book characters, movie characters as well. It’s like, if you don’t know what you want, you can find it as a Funko Pop figurine.”
Penny took a step back and resisted the urge to take a small bow. “That’s it.”
She looked up at Barrell. “Your turn.”
She was so nervous about doing this exercise, she was only able to give him a small smile. Public speaking was never her strong suit. She wasn’t too thrilled to have the spotlight on her while she gave a speech in front of her boss, but she made it through.

“I’m wanting to learn everything.” Penny said, excitedly. “I’ll make notes in my journal, so I can go home tonight and practice. Maybe during another session, you can help me create music to the lyrics I have. Something basic.”
When Hector touched her, she tried again to not back away. There wasn’t anything creepy about the guy, but Penny wasn’t used to someone grabbing her hands. She wasn’t used to someone mentioning that there was something on a guitar called a G string, either.
When Hector told her this, Penny burst out laughing.
“Get out of here! That’s not a string! Well, it is, but isn’t that … isn’t that something else? That’s not on a guitar. A G string.”
It’s either this guy was oblivious to what the string shared a name with, or he had said it so many times that it lost its humor. Penny finished laughing and smirking over the name of the chord, and was now looking at the guy, seeing if he would make acknowledgement of the name.

Penny nodded enthusiastically. “I know on TV they have to get a search warrant before busting down the door of someone’s home. I tried watching a bounty hunter show, but it was too scary for me.”
She lowered her voice and leaned in before continuing. “It made me nervous that some guy with a mullet was going to kick down my door.” Penny sat up and talked in a normal voice, rearranging her silverware. “Now, I just stick with my favorite. CSI: Miami!” She grinned at him.
“Detective Duquesne is my favorite. Have you ever seen it before?”
Penny was so caught up talking about TV shows and CSI: Miami, she didn’t notice that the server still hadn’t arrived at their table. Maybe it was because they saw the two of them talking, and didn’t want to disrupt their conversation. She was enjoying their talk, but her stomach was starting to growl.
“I wonder where our server is. Maybe I should flag them down.” She looked around and put her hand halfway up, in case she caught the eye of the person.
“I don’t want to keep you from your duties. I’m sure you have a lot of bad guys to catch.”
Her hand dropped, and she let out a loud “Hey!”
“Do you think I could go for a ride-along someday?” Her eyes grew big, and lit up with the idea.

“I used to, but a couple days ago I got a roommate. It’s only for a little while. I was able to rent out a small apartment that was once needing repairs. But I fixed it up, so it looks nice. Everything works – it was mostly cosmetic stuff.”
Penny stood up and smiled down at him. “Of course, I want you there! I wouldn’t have asked you to come if I didn’t. We can just go there and look around. I don’t know why I didn’t think about that before. Great idea!”
She grabbed her journal from the bench and turned around.
“I think I passed it a couple days ago.” She said, quizzingly. “I think we have to go right out of the park. Right?” Penny asked, looking over her shoulder.
WHOSITS AND WHATSITS TRINKET SHOPPE
Penny pushed open the door to the small shop and held it for Barrell.
“Well, we finally made it.”
Penny turned and took in Whosits and Whatsits. They seemed to have a little of everything available for purchase. There were some paintings for sale, trinkets on the shelves, and books, among other things.
“What did you want to look at first?” She asked Barrell.

“Oh!” Penny was surprised when Wendy took her hand in gratitude. “It’s really nothing. I know how it feels to be without a home. It will definitely save you money, so you don’t need to spend it on a room at an inn.”
She let Wendy’s hand go, and turned to the rest of her apartment. “Thank you, thank you. I’m still trying to figure everything out. Where to put things, decorations, that sort of thing. Kitchen is right here, living area in the back. Bathroom and bedroom are over here. If you don’t want to share the bedroom with me, we can drag the futon out. But it won’t give you much personal space. Not that it would if we were both in the bedroom. But if you needed to work on whatever, and needed some peace and quiet, I could always come out here-” she pointed her hand towards the back of the apartment. “to the living room.”
“I’m a pretty quiet person, though. I don’t think we will have any problems.”

“I write a lot about life. I have been trying to write more about relationships and feelings, but sometimes it doesn’t come out right.” Penny’s mouth twitched at the side and she looked down.
“I dunno, I just go with the flow.” She laughed slightly, and looked back up at him. “Writing is definitely my favorite. I draw sometimes and everything, but I’m always writing lyrics and stories in my journal. That’s why I carry it with me all the time.”
When he talked to Penny about how her music was only hers, and that no one could take it from her, it made her perplexed. She had never shared her journal with anyone, except for quickly leafing through it with Barrell. The stories and lyrics were so personal to her, she didn’t dare share them with anyone. She would probably die with embarrassment if anyone got their hands on her journal. She wouldn’t mind showing him her lyrics, but that was because he also wrote his own songs. He was a fellow lyric-writer, and would understand. But show them to a person her age that didn’t write music? There was no way Penny could even think about it.

Detention | Open
To Penny, there was nothing wrong with making science a little more fascinating – and fun. She felt, in her heart, that adding a bit more baking soda and hydrogen peroxide to the class experiment would do just that.
Who knew that it would cause such an explosion?
She certainly didn’t. However, Penny didn’t see anything wrong with it. Instead, she learned something new that day, and couldn’t believe when the teacher handed her another detention slip.
Arriving to the classroom where detentions were held, she wrote her name on the list and found an empty seat. Throwing her bag over the chair, she sat down and slumped. Sensing that someone sat down next to her, she looked over at them.
“What are you doing time for?”

“No, I found it okay. Damn, you have a nice place! Do you live here by yourself as well?”
She let her bag fall from her shoulder, and gently placed it on the floor. Shifting her books on her hip. Penny blew some of her long hair out of her face.
“I don’t want to do this project, but I’m glad I’m doing it with you. I don’t know a thing about science or whatever it is.” She held up her one free hand, looked at the floor, and walked a little before turning on her heel to face Isa again.
“I don’t know a thing about Cobalt, but I found some books about it. I just hope that it’s up to date. I don’t have internet at my apartment yet, so this is my contribution.”
“Where would you want to set up shop? This place is really nice. Much nicer than mine. Kudos!” Penny gave a genuine smile to Isa, looking around the place.
