You have to change genres/the types of books you read and get recommendations from other people. If you're too shy to ask, look through people's TBR lists, lists of books that are similar to shows or movies you like, etc.

Also, if you do shop at Barnes and Noble, look through their monthly picks because as of 2025 they're picked by actual people within the company who liked them. Don't be afraid to ask the booksellers for recs either! I worked for B&N for a while and we were encouraged to help people find books they'd like to encourage a love of books. Yes partly for sales but also because we wanted to encourage a love of reading!

In short, expand your horizons. It's fine to read what everyone else is reading or what's popular, we all do from time to time, but you need a palette cleanser or "genre vacation" every now and again!

if youre not in school anymore and are looking for ways to get out of the house more go to the nearest "hip" coffee shop you can that has a bulletin board with flyers on it for local events and attend any and all the ones youre able to ESPECIALLY if they're free. this is the only actionable advice that has worked for me
