For this chapter we get to see the location of a terrorist attack--and earn about the rules of robotics in the year 2222. I introduced a new character that I hope to bring back in future chapters. His name is, well, you'll find out when you read it. He's another "victim" of the LHD, as Sato has come to call the device that seemed to turn Ryca into a different person(?).

I'm really enjoying the plot of Pete, Cartooned currently. I hope you are, too! Trust me--it's going somewhere! It's not just cartooned, me, getting a tour of the solar system that the aliens won't let Earthlings see. Next week Pete and Alaan actually land on the Double Zero. After that, things will start to get more interesting!

This is refresh of one of my favorite cartoons that I have ever drawn. The art is nearly identical because I thought it was so full of wonderful melancholy. Penny is on a hillside enjoying the sky but she looks up at it so bleakly. My original caption was not very interesting so I just gave her a thought bubble showing us what inspired her facial expression.

This was a very fun chapter to revisit--I originally started writing the draft I am updating eight years ago, so reading it again after all this time, it's like I've never read it before. What you've been reading hasn't been just small edits here and there, either, I've been making some somewhat substantial changes. The character of Arif wasn't even in the original draft but I created an entire scene with him because it was a better way to deal with Ryca than having Sato just happen to be a master hacker (ugh--too easy!) and I named him after a buddy of mine from a previous dayjob. We're not in close touch anymore, but it makes me remember those days together. My old friend aside, in this chapter I got to rewrite a bunch of stuff that was clearly the result of a bad night of bad writing. A lot of the "beyond the 33rd" stuff I had written was too vague and what wasn't vague was to cliche--almost comical. Plus I had the idea of a for a future antagonist and I introduced them in a very subtle way.
Hope you are enjoying it so far!

Pete.ink/weekly August 2022 Week 3 (of 4.5)
Welcome to Pete.ink/weekly for week 3 (of 4.5) of August 2022! Yep, August ends in the middle of the week so the fourth Pete.ink/weekly will be available the first weekend of September. Last week I said I might have some news by the end of the week--yeah, as the month has passed so have my hopes! 😅Just like most months, but hey, I've still been successful with creating content consistently every week since the beginning of March! So, I think we should take that as a win.
Just a quick reminder that I have 3 limited edition t-shirts on sale, all of which will disappear from the internet with in 3 weeks (or less). A great way to support me is buying one and wearing it everywhere you go! Never take it off. Shower in it! This would mean a lot to me! Head on over Pete.ink/merch to take a look at these incredible works of art that will look amazing on you, you amazingly gorgeous human being! That link once again: Pete.ink/merch

Some thoughts on this week's FacingLife.WTF:
I keep feeling the need to tweak the female face's design. I really prefer her flat-topped eyes but showing her eyelids does make her look more female to me. Of course, even thinking about this brings up all kinds of anxiety with American culture trying to become more free and open to more than just the two genders. As an ally to all humans, I hesitate to even talk about gender appearances and feel like I'm opening myself to criticism by even having a binary gendered pair of characters. The thing is, binary genders is the world I've known for most of my life. Recognizing and interacting with trans and gender fluid people in my every day life is a common occurrence but because we see them so rarely in media, I'm not able to easily know how to represent them in my own work. In real life it's easy to interact with them--I just treat them like normal people. In art, however, I feel like it's a much more complicated issue. I'm definitely working on it, though.

I got a fun response to this one from a rightwinger who quote tweeted it with the hashtag "theleftcantmeme" which to me is funny because, it's not a meme. It's a comic strip. It's not a random pop culture reference with big letters and snarky comment. It's commentary. Of course, I'd never expect a decent argument from a conservative on Twitter because there isn't one for them to have--on Twitter or off. If you are pro-life you should be anti-gun. If you are pro-gun, you should be pro-choice. Of course, the ultimate argument is: if you're willing to kill someone to protect your freedom then you should be ok with abortion. As any parent will tell you, pregnancy and being a parent pretty much ends all freedom for you whatsoever. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I'm only joking a little bit there.

This has been really fun so far--as I said in the last Pete.ink/weekly (which I made available just yesterday) I had started working on FutureBlog a long long time ago and had forgotten all about it until just recently. It's been great reading my old writing because it's been so long and I don't remember most of it! Of course, I am rewriting chunks of it here and there. I had a few different ideas last decade that I didn't care for. For instance the lead character was originally going to be named "Pete the 3rd" and be an adopted descendent of mine. I decided that was a little too "Mary Sue" (aka too much like putting an idealized version of myself in my own story) and felt I should just disconnect the story from me altogether for the sake of simplicity. I also re-set this story a further hundred years into the future so he'd have to be Pete the 4th or just very very old. 😅

Today was another day off from posting things. However, and as usual, I was working on other parts of the Pete.ink media empire! Thursday will get a new name soon--Nerdy Thursday! That's because I plan to start posting some (hopefully weekly) nerd-related content. Well, my t-shirt collection is even bigger now, so watch for compilation posts on NerdyPete.net starting Thursday next week. I'll also include other fun nerdery, like peeks at my toy collection, my favorite personal gadgets (a couple I built myself), my latest 3D prints and other geeky stuff!

This month's Skelly-chan design is available on a t-shirt for 30 days only! Head over to Pete.ink/merch to get yours!
Tumblr media
I know, I know--this seems so pithy and saccharine, right? The thing is, I agree with Skelly-chan. This isn't just an excuse to draw a cute cartoon. I've been meditating regularly for going on two years now and I've come to understand that joy isa choice. Sure, it's great when happy things just land in your lap but the universe does not tend to line up good things in a row for your easy enjoyment. And if your life is like mine, you know that the universe can often line up dumpster fire after dumpster fire for your easy and gradual torture. In times like that, I know I've felt powerless. Meditation has taught me that all I need to do is look for something good in my life and I will find it. I noticed this while listening to a guided meditation that was filled with morning affirmations. "You're not who you were yesterday, and today, you know what your goals are and you know how to achieve them" stuff like that. But then, toward the end of it, the mediation teacher says "smile" and I did and I noticed I felt better than I had a moment earlier.
It wasn't like some super aspirin you take and immediately your headache vanishes. It was more like I felt just a bit less stressed or weighted down by the day ahead. Try it yourself right now--just smile. It's like muscle memory, where your body and your mind just feels better--even if it's only slightly! If it doesn't work for you, I guess you're a weirdo! I'm kidding! I'm not sure why it doesn't work for you. I say keep trying. Or see a therapist. Or both!
That's it for this week's Pete.ink/weekly!

Pete.ink/weekly Week 4 July 2022
Welcome to week 4 (of 4) for July of 2022 and here comes another week of content from me, Pete Nicholls at Pete.ink! Sorry this edition of Pete.ink/weekly is so late! I took a long weekend that really wiped me out. You can read more about it below!

I made a cool "cover" image for FutureBlog! What do you think?
Go read chapter 2! Or start from the beginning!
A little backstory on FutureBlog is that I started writing it back when I was living in Los Angeles. Hence, the city having "Angel" in its name. The basic setting for the story was inspired by The Jetsons cartoon which I loved growing up. I went on to work for Hanna-Barbera in the 90s (the company that produced The Jetsons) and I had often wondered about what the real story behind how the world that the Jetsons lived in came to exist. It always struck me as a future-imperfect reflection of the American culture of the time. Think about it--while episodes of The Jetsons were originally airing on TV in the 1960s there was a lot of bigotry, poverty, political corruption, and war going on in the real world that The Jetsons, never really addressed. When they did broach any of those topics it was candy-coated and light frothy stuff played for laughs. I get that it's a kids show, but what if they had tried to tell a more realistic story about how the future looked a LOT like the now, only with poverty "solved," disease "solved," war "avoided," cities in the sky and... wait--what was down below?
After a lot of brainstorming I sat down and started writing FutureBlog. I put it aside for a while and while I was working on a organizing-all-of-my-creative-projects project, I came across the first partial draft and even an opening sequence to a screenplay version. With global warming seriously at play these days, I decided this was a perfect project to dive back into. Hope you enjoy it! Please let me know what you think! Yep, I'm really going there with Pete, Cartooned! I just got bored and, frankly frustrated, with just trying to do a stand-up routine in a comic strip format. I'm not good at the fun/weird expressionistic diary comics some folks do. My brain just leans to far to the literal. So, I asked myself, "What would make this easier and more fun to do?" My answer for a LOT of things is "make it science fiction, of course!" The only drawback is that it's going to really challenge my art chops. Hey, YOLO, right?
It's time for another WednesJAY with your pal and mine, Jay The Pal!https://www.youtube.com/embed/er4n9oOrdVs

A bit about Jay The Pal:
When I created Jay, I had been grieving about my uncle having passed the previous year and concurrently dealing with a serious bout of depression related to what was going on in my life, in general. I had a really rough couple months. Then I came across an article online about FAO Schwarz (they were still around in 2008/9) selling Muppets you can design through their website. My wife and I, both being big fans of the Muppets, were so excited about having our own Muppets that we quickly designed one for each of us and placed our order. They arrived the day before we hopped on a bus to go to Washington DC to see Barack Obama be inaugurated. I was so excited that I brought my Muppet with me. I knew I was going to name him after my late uncle but beyond that, I had no idea who he actually was as a person. To find out, I had him out and on my arm as we saw the sights in our nation's capital and had my wife take tons of photos and video. One of the photos just clicked for me. I saw him in a photo and I just spoke with Jay's voice when I said, what I thought he was saying the photo: "YEAH!"
I then shot some video of him (my wife, Sierra, definitely did at least some of the shooting) and began to fine tune his frenetic, awkward attitude. I even performed him in front of total strangers (something I never thought I could do--I'm usually kind of crippled by stage fright). It would be months later before I noticed that my depression had gone away. I credit and thank Jay for that.
A good bit into the pandemic, I noticed some of those old depression feelings coming back. They were not as strong as they were back in late 2008/9, but I recognized something was coming. I knew it was time to bring Jay back. I am never quite sure why I stop shooting stuff with him. I enjoy puppeteering with him so much. Anyway, that's a bit about Jay The Pal.
OK, a bit more than a bit!
YEAH!
Thursday, July 28, 2022
Today, I just worked on my Goings On comic for Friday as I wouldn't have time to work on it on Friday. My wife and I left for a family vacation Friday morning for our first even slightly real vacation since October of '19. Like that trip, this was a 4 day weekend. This time we visited her late mom's home town up in Massachusetts, where she still has family. It's a small, former whaling town with plenty of history, watering holes and small-town charm to explore. Plus a couple friends of ours were in a production of Beauty and the Beast that my wife had gotten us tickets to see. So, it was going to be a fun trip out of the big city.

Posted this from the Peter Pan bus:
Tumblr media
That's all for the final week of July! After the trip I mentioned above, I was pretty wiped out from all of the social activities and struggled to keep up with my regular schedule. That's why this edition of Pete.ink/weekly is going out so late. Humble apologies! The August week 1 edition of Pete.ink/weekly should go out tomorrow.
I'M TRYING A NEW THING:
If you have a moment, please check out GoingsOn.art. If you like the art you see there (the above is one of them) and want either on a t-shirt (or just want to support me) please click on them or just go to Pete.ink/merch. That will get you to my profile on Everpress.com that features limited time only t-shirt designs. Each new cartoon I put up on GoingsOn.art will be available for a limited time only there, and on my Everpress as a t-shirt for 30 days. So act now and get one before I take down the designs forever--or at least until publish them in a book. I promise these cartoons will never appear on a shirt again in the current form. Full disclosure, I may update the designs and make them available again, but not without demand from readers. The point here is that I have entirely too many ideas for cartoons and t-shirt designs and feel like it might be effective to not try to manage a huge library of designs and just focus on them one by one. It would be a big help if you could GoingsOn.art and see what you think!
That's it for this week's Pete.ink/weekly!
Please consider supporting me by sharing my work, telling you friends, following me on social media, supporting me financially by getting a subscription/membership on my Patreon, BuyMeACoffee, or Tumblr. Tonight, my wife and I saw the latest movie from Jordan Peele: NOPE. It was pretty good! It tells the story of a family of Hollywood horse wranglers who discover something strange going on around their ranch outside of Los Angles. No spoilers, but it really gets you on the edge of your seat. I hesitate to write something for ScriptDrPete.com about it because there are maybe 5 things that I would have changed if I had written it but they would have improved the film in only minor ways. Honestly, I came out of it feeling lucky to have been able to see it at all, let alone in IMAX and with Peele, the director himself, doing a chat in the theater before the movie with one of the lead actors in the film, Keke Palmer.
The only thing I'll warn you about is that, at times, it feels like the NOPE is meandering but it isn't. One thing I learned from the chat they had is that Peele takes storytelling very seriously and there is nothing in this movie that isn't there for a reason.
Also, there is almost no actual "horror" shown in the film. The vast majority of it is in your mind. That's the sign of a good writer and a good filmmaker. The rule is "show, don't tell," but a real master storyteller can show without showing--by just putting the idea in your head.

It's a new monthly comic series from me! Check out the first Goings On comic!
Tumblr media
I had the idea for this specific cartoon for a long time. I originally came across a very similar drawing to this in a Japanese language text book. I found it amusing that they were depicting, what looked to me like, a little girl smoking a cigarette. The caption was something about smoking "tobacco." They don't use the word "cigarette" in Japanese but they say "タバコ" (tabako) as we would say "cigarette."
Once I drew my version of the girl, I felt like she had a vaguely mischievous look on her face so I added a big pot leaf to her shirt. I wanted to make it obvious that I was saying she was smoking pot, so I decided to do my version of the original caption "タバコではありません,"(tabako de wa arimasen) under which I'd put the English translation "This is not tobacco.", but then I realized how similar the phrasing was to the classic Magritte painting, "Ceci n'est pas Une Pipe" or "This is not a pipe." So, I checked with Google Translate and VOILA! I had my ideal caption!
So, I had the idea ten years ago to make a parody of this illustration in a Japanese textbook and up to the hour I posted the finished cartoon, it was still evolving.
If you like it, you can get it on a t-shirt for a limited time on my teespring!
Another thing I'll be doing with Goings On comics is taking each comic offline as I put a new one up. I'm experimenting with making my work a bit more ephemeral. Of course, eventually I will make everything available in a compilation that will be for sale (the e-book version will be free if you support me on one of my 3 crowdfunding blogs or any of my Substacks) but it feels weird to me to be giving everything away for free. The Internet is funny like that.
I may also have a NFT coming soon... I've been looking into how to make one and I figure why not? I'll let you know how it goes...
That's it for this week's Pete.ink/weekly!
I'd like to apologize for some aggressive pleas for financial support. Well, any request for money feels aggressive to me. I hate even thinking about money, but if I want to keep creating content, it has to be done. You can help me avoid this by sharing my work, this issue of Pete.ink/weekly, or anything else I post with your friends/family! You can also get a subscription/membership on my Patreon, BuyMeACoffee, or Tumblr. They start at just $2/mo! Cancel any time! Subscribing to my Substacks is another way to help! Each Substack will run you $5/mo. Again, you can cancel at any time!
While sharing is literally how you will help me build an audience, enough people getting paid subscriptions/memberships/etc is how I'll pay my rent and bills. No one does anything alone, after all.
Thanks again for reading!
Have a great week and hope you enjoyed the content!

I'm an adult and I'm still waiting! 😅😳😩
Sorry for the light amount of content this week--I do have a behind-the-scenes photo of this week's and next's Pete, Cartooned when both comics were only pencilled.
Tumblr media
I blurred out next week's pencils because, you know, spoilers! I left a few tantalizing hints in there to keep you guessing until the next comic comes out on Wednesday. 😉
That's it for this week's Pete.ink/weekly!
I'd like to apologize--first for sending this edition of Pete.ink/weekly out late but also, in advance, for some aggressive pleas for financial support. Well, they'll be aggressive for me. I hate even thinking about money, but if I want to keep creating content, it has to be done. You can help me avoid this by sharing my work, this issue of Pete.ink/weekly or anything else I post with your friends/family! You can also up get a subscription/membership on my Patreon, BuyMeACoffee, or Tumblr. They start at just $2/mo! You can also subscribe to my Substacks! Each will run you $5/mo. Cancel any time!

I wrote a thing! My thoughts on Pixar's new movie "Lightyear," how it's good, how it's not, why it may have bombed (by Disney standards) and "How I'd" have written it differently. I'm actually pretty excited about that last part! Go read it here!

Thursday July 7, 2022
As always, Thursday was spent doing behind the scenes stuff--like partially putting together this very update!

I would have put the URL for the US suicide prevention hotline on there but it's too damn long!! So here it is, just in case you or someone you know needs it: https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org and hey, good news--after July 16, 2022, at least the phone number will be shorter--just dial 988 anywhere in the US!
And here is a behind-the-scenes time-lapse video of the drawing of the above Judgie Bear cartoon. The original was drawn back in 2017 and I loved it so much I wanted to redo it with better art, better lettering and a more fleshed out joke. However, the original finished drawing was a perfectly good place to start, so that's where the below time-lapse video starts.

Eight years ago, I wrote my first "How I'd" style move review. Go read it and see how I'd have made Frozen a better movie!

I posted nothing! But I was busy on other content that you will see soon. Also, Thursday night I saw stop-motion maestro, Phil Tippett's new film, Mad God in the theater. It took him 30 years to make. Keep an eye out for a critique of Mad Godon ScriptDrPete.com probably next week. In a nutshell, it's the ugliest, most depressing work of cinematic art I've seen since Man Bites Dog--a movie I don't recommend you watch because, while it's kind of brilliant, it's very depressing and will make you want to use bleach to disinfect your soul. Mad God definitely did not make me feel that way (Mad God is actually quite beautiful in how ugly it is), though I was very happy to see the new Lightyear movie the following night. Lightyear I heartily recommend as it was fun, wonderful, scifi and a Pixar film--which means you'll definitely enjoy it and, if you're like me, likely cry two-to-three times.
