2018: Fav Albums + Songs
12th year posting a top albums and songs list. Way too pot committed to bail at this point... ALBUMS 1. Robyn - Honey ("Missing You") 2. Amen Dunes - Freedom ("Blue Rose") 3. Tirzah - Devotion ("Gladly") 4. Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever - Hope Downs ("Talking Straight") 5. Domenique Dumont - Miniatures de Auto Rhythm ("Faux savage") I will never tire of Robyn's "crying on the dance floor" genre of electronic pop music. I think I might even like Honey front to back more than Body Talk, it's that good...I listened to the Amen Dunes record more than anything else all year.  Highly recommend if you like Kurt Vile, War On Drugs, or the idea of listening to twangy indie folk on a FM radio...Tirzah aka Mica Levi also scored the Under The Skin soundtrack and this pop album has a similar unsettling, but intimate vibe that I kept returning to all year and discovering new things to love about it...Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever didn't come on my radar until about a month ago but it's rocketed up my list. It's the perfect distillation of indie rock imo. Ridiculously catchy...Domenique Dumont: I am such a sucker for this kind of retro, vaguely european/balearic electronic pop that is both breezy and sultry. 6. Kurt Vile - Bottle It In ("Hysteria") 7. Neko Case - Hell-On ("Last Lion of Albion") 8. Paul Williams - Surf Music ("Number One") 9. Kate NV - для FOR ("yxo EAR") 10. U.S. Girls - in a Poem Unlimited ("Rosebud") I will admit a lot of Kurt Vile records sound the same to me and blur together, but it always seems to hit the spot. Pairs nicely with the Amen Dunes album...Like Robyn, Neko continues to toss haymakers record after record late into her career...Paul Williams is a comedian from New Zealand who name checks random NBA players like Anthony Bennett in tongue-in-cheek, synthesizer-fueled pop songs that are way better than they have any business being. If you liked the Discovery album from the Vampire Weekend dude a handful of years back, you'll love this...This Kate NV album is a weird collection of electronic blips and bloops that would feel right at home as the soundtrack to a Werner Herzog aquatic documentary...U.S. Girls is 2018's flavor of fuzzy, female-fronted indie pop that I always seem to love (see: Hinds). HM: The 1975 - A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships HM: The Amazing - In Transit HM: Big Red Machine - Big Red Machine HM: NADINE - oh my HM: Porches - The House 1975 just came out, but I already love it. Would probably inch up higher if I had gotten ahold of it earlier...The Amazing is really solid shoegaze that pleasantly reminded me of my fav album last year from Slowdrive...Big Red Machine is this weird amalgam of all your favorite indie rock bands (Bon Iver, TV On The Radio, The National, etc.). I think this crew will dig it...Check out "Pews" by NADINE, she's carrying the Feist torch...Because I'm apparently incapable of describing music without name checking other bands, this Porches album reminds me of Tanlines in a great way. SONGS: 1. easyFun - "Be Your USA" 2. Buzzy Lee - "Coolhand" 3. DJ Koze - "Pick Up" 4. G Flip - "About You" 5. Tularosa - "If You Love Me" Some times I think I'm going crazy with how much I love bubblegum P.C. Music as a 31yo, but if not loving "Be Your USA" is wrong, I don't wanna be right?...Buzzy Lee, I kid you not, is Steven Spielberg's daughter, but that has nothing to do with "Coolhand" being a great fucking song...The entire DJ Koze album should prolly be on my albums list but this song always towered above the rest..."About You" is one of those songs I swear will inevitably be a billboard radio hit. Bet you see her on SNL in the next year a la the Maggie Rogers supernova ...Any you head of this band Tularosa and their frontman 'Ryan English'??! I always knew Ryan had a great voice, I just didn't know it was *this* great...my god dude. Keep 'em coming. 6. Houndmouth - "Waiting For The Night To Come" 7. The Shins - "Heartworms (Flipped)" 8. Panda Bear - "Dolphin" 9. Young Fathers - "In My View" 10. Chad Valley - "Up Again" "Waiting, just waiting" is such a catchy riff...Throwback Shins banger...Obligatory Animal Collective love...Young Fathers is our generation's TVOTR...After all these years I should really be better at writing about music. I like Chad Valley's sound. It's very nice to my ears.

Tumblr media
Every year since 2006 I’ve made a list of my favorite albums + songs of the year. It’s a tradition I started doing with friends in college and it’s continued all of these years. You can find links to previous lists on the sidebar.
This is the 2016 edition. It’s a hodge podge of the things I generally like (fuzzy, girl-fronted indie pop and slick, electronic pop), some new favorites (R&B, ambient), and in some cases, a cocktail of a few of those.
I linked to Spotify + Soundcloud where I could in case you want to play along at home...

Favorite Albums + Songs of 2015
This is my tenth year making a top albums + songs of the year list. It's a silly tradition, but one I enjoy. I have the links to all of my previous lists on the sidebar.   This year I made a little sound collage thing with clips from all my favorite albums and songs, along with narration from my friend the Swamp Gator (a talented vocal artist I know from Fiverr.com who has become an integral member of The Fantasy Football Comedy Hour podcast). Anyways, enjoy:
Top Albums of 2015: 1. Sufjan Stevens – Carrie & Lowell 2. Tobias Jesso Jr. - Goon 3. Grimes – Art Angels 4. Dominique Dumont - Comma Ca 5. Leon Bridges - Coming Home 6. Jamie XX – In Colour 7. Kurt Vile -  Believe I'm Goin Down... 8. Beirut – No No No 9. Lower Dens – Escape From Evil 10. Panda Bear - Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper Honorable Mentions: Destroyer – Poison Season Errors – Lease of Life Lucero – All A Man Should Do Moonbabies – Wizards on The Beach Pure Bathing Culture – Pray for Rain Top Songs of 2015: 1. Brandon Flowers - "Between Me & You" 8. Tanlines - "Pieces" 9. easyFun - "Laplander" 10. Danny L Harle - "Broken Flowers"

Nick Stevens is one funny, nice dude. Had a blast talking with him on the podcast.
Super fun time talking fantasy, the DFS debacle, the great kicker crisis & more w/the guys on @TheFFComedyHr. These dudes put out a great show every week, complete with sketches and characters and everything that make for an actual comedy show, but in easily downloadable podcast form. Most definitely worth a follow and a listen. Also, if you’re in the Boston area they’ll be doing some live shows soon. So stay tuned, enjoy and use the promo code DOWNFORSNACKS.

Favorite Albums and Songs of 2014
ALBUMS
1. Popcaan - Where We Come From I never knew I needed a melancholic, Jamaican dancehall album, but now I can’t imagine 2014 without it.
2. Yumi Zouma - EP My favorite band of the year. 4 perfect songs here + a couple knockout singles (“Alena” & “It Feels Good To Be Around You”). Like a girl-fronted Wild Nothing. Dreamy, sensual, simple. 3. Mac DeMarco - Salad Days When I listen to Salad Days, I can’t help but think there is a world where these songs are massive radio pop hits, but I ultimately love this album for its unapologetic hungover, laziness. 4. A Sunny Day In Glasgow - Sea When Absent The most sonically interesting album of the year. Crashes of percussion, waves of sound--all pierced by soaring vocals. 5. Spoon - They Want My Soul There’s a real chance that I’m just a Spoon apologist, blinded by homerism. I’m the guy who also loved 2010’s overlooked Transference. Sure, this isn't the best Spoon record, but it’s really good. And a really good Spoon record is better than most bands’ best. 6. Ben Khan - 1992 EP 1992 is what the Twin Peaks theme song would sound like if it was remixed by Jai Paul and Neon Indian. So basically something I would dream up. 7. SALES - EP A simple, well-crafted bedroom pop debut that is restrained just enough to avoid being overly twee (don’t let the ukulele fool you!). 8. Kevin Drew - Darlings Consider this my arbitrage play on The War On Drugs. Darlings is an album I found myself continually revisiting throughout the year (whereas I lost interest in Lost In The Dream) and reminded me over and over what a great songwriter Kevin Drew is. 9. Real Estate - Atlas Similar to Spoon, a band who continually puts out solid, enjoyable albums. They never reinvent the wheel and a lot of the songs sound very similar, but they know exactly who they are and what they do well.  10. Doss - EP I found myself repeatedly listening to Doss’ light and dreamy electronic soundscapes throughout the year. Honorable Mentions Beverly - Careers Caribou - Our Love Future Islands - Singles Jessie Ware - Tough Love Zzzt - Far Away EP SONGS 1. Yumi Zouma - “Alena” Dropping one of the best releases of the year wasn’t enough for Yumi Zouma, so they went ahead and followed it up with a single better than anything on their terrific debut EP. That chorus gets me every. single. time. 2. Tobias Jesso Jr. - “True Love” Something as simple and bare as “True Love” shouldn't be this affecting. Can’t wait for his full length. 3. A.G. Cook - “Beautiful” So many great songs from London's “PC Music” net label, but this was my favorite.  4. DEERS - “Between Cans” I’m a sucker for any girl-fronted, jangly indie pop, but DEERS do it better than just about anyone else. This is only one of a handful great singles they put out this year.   5. TOPS - “Way To Be Loved” TOPS blew me out of the water a couple years ago with their debut Tender Opposites and while I didn't dig this year’s follow-up as much, “Way To Be Loved” is another stunner. 6. ceo - “Whorehouse” Like when an old TV show is brought back for a reboot and the overwhelming nostalgia for the original makes it tough for the 2.0 version to meet the lofty expectations: ceo won’t ever be able to fully recapture what they had with the Tough Alliance, but “Whorehouse” is pretty close. 7. Jenny Lewis - “Just One Of The Guys” Even though the subject material is very specific, this still always feels to me like a 2014 anthem for everyone. 8. Alvvays - “Archie, Marry Me” Coming to an indie movie soundtrack near you in 2015.
9. FKA Twigs - “Two Weeks”  FKA Twigs should play the SuperBowl halftime show. The Play60 kids on hand would be weirded out, but I’d enjoy the hell out of it.
10. Music Go Music - “Nite After Nite” I love the build of this song in the first minute or so. The moment when the drums first kick in at :46 and then pick-up even more speed a few seconds later before the chorus is a revelation. ***

Favorite Albums and Songs of 2013
2013 Albums of the Year
1. Modern Vampires of the City - Vampire Weekend  I think this album is nearly flawless. I love that they dialed back some of their more annoying surfy and afro-punky stylings. It’s subtle and mature, while still remaining undeniably catchy. “Step” is heartbreaking. The end of “Hannah Hunt” is my favorite musical moment of the whole year. Almost impossible not to run this one back after coming to the end.
2. Anxiety - Autre Ne Veut “Play By Play” and “Counting” is a vicious 1-2 punch and the rest of the album is the perfect coda after getting KTFO (because music is like boxing you see).
3. Skyer - Postiljonen If you thought some vaguely obscure Swedish pop album wasn't making it on to my list, you are sorely mistaken and shouldn't thumb your nose at history (8 yrs running!). My favorite 2013 album to recommend. As sonically lush and sweeping as anything Sigur Ros has ever done, yet still immediately accessible.
4. Other Life - Sean Nicholas Savage It took me a long time to realize how heavy Savage’s subject matter actually was because I couldn't get over how damn sexy he made it sound.
5. The Lives Inside the Lines in Your Hand - Matt Pond The artist formally known as Matt Pond PA drops the PA and delivers one of the best records of the year. A warm, welcoming autumnal album from one of the best singer/songwriters out there.
6. Hanging Gardens - Classixx Smoooothe club bangers for your headphones.
7. Trouble Will Find Me - The National I never came around on High Violet, but TWFM can hang with Boxer and Alligator. A really solid return to form.
8. Moon Tides - Pure Bathing Culture Like some beautiful hybrid of Beach House and Puro Instinct. Yes plz.
9. Cerulean Salt - Waxahatchee A wonderful, moody record reminiscent of early Cat Power and Mirah.
10. Heartthrob - Tegan and Sara So many slept on power pop jams here. 5 Honorable Mentions
- The Bones of What You Believe - CHVRCHES It’s like a female-fronted M83, what’s not to like!
- Free Your Mind - Cut Copy Cut Copy doin’ Cut Copy things.
- Apar - Delorean Delorean doin’ Delorean things. (clearly phoning in the analysis this yr!)
- Leaked Demos - Jai Paul I guess we are treating this as a proper 2013 release as far as lists go? James Blake meets Neon Indian in a massively promising debut from the mysterious Jai Paul. - Soft Will - Smith Westerns These guys have become one of the most consistent and reliably good bands in indie rock. And they are still in college, I think.
*** 2013 Songs of the Year (no overlap from albums otherwise it would just be all Vampire Weekend and Autre Ne Veut)
1. "Nearly Midnight, Honolulu" - Neko Case 2. "Everyone is Noah, Everyone is the Ark" - Moonface
My two favorite songs of the year are sister and brother. Two songs stripped down to the bare essentials--Neko going completely acapella and Krug with just a piano. Words of encouragement for when heaven and mothers are cruel. Please build yourself up and don’t you ever shut up please.
3. "Get Lucky" - Daft Punk 2013’s defining anthem. Sorry, Robin Thicke.
4.. "Older" - Shine 2009 Honestly, at this point icy, irresistible pop songs should just be included in Sweden’s GDP. Stay cool forever. (Preview of this list next year: ceo's "Whorehouse")
5. "College" - Rogue Wave Descended Like Vultures is one of my favorite albums ever. This new cut would fit wonderfully on it.
6. "Bipp" - Sophie I could see how people might be turned off by this song, but I love all the glitchy beats and bubblegum vocals.
7. "Doin' It Right" - Daft Punk + Panda Bear The other killer song on Random Access Memories. Besides, I wouldn't feel right doing a year-end list without some Animal Collective dap.
8. "Song for Zula" - Phosphorescent This is Phosphorescent just crushing M. Ward at his own game (because music is a competition, you see) in a gorgeous, winding ballad.
9. “Wakin On a Pretty Day” - Kurt Vile When you play this song, the sun magically appears, your windows roll down, and your hair gets gently tousled by the wind. It’s true.
10. “Avant Gardener” - Courtney Barnett Not so much a song as a wonderful bit of storytelling. Australia's answer to Best Coast.

Still can't get over this incredible Boston Globe interview with "Danny"--the dude who was carjacked by the marathon bombing suspects. It's a super harrowing and scary account, but the exuberant self-preservation instincts behind this quote he gave to the two brothers made me smile.

I finally finished reading Haruki Murakami's massive 1Q84 last night and can't stop thinking about it today.
In other news, there is a lot of Japanese fan art for 1Q84 out there!

This is a fun graphic, although I'm sad to admit that I didn't realize Community is supposed to be set in Colorado. How many Harmontown podcasts do I need to listen to before I get my Community superfan badge back?
