I decided to choose this picture because the last article we read mentioned oppression and raising awareness through software codes. It also made me think about how some people think that oppression deals with only one thing, or one class of people. In reality just like the picture illustrates oppression deals with gender, religions and all kinds of people.

Tuesday’s reading about women branding themselves made me think of Kim Kardashian’s book of selfies. Kim Kardashian’s book of selfies sold 32,000 copies. Kim Kardashian is the 2nd most popular celebrity on Instagram and it has not always been this way. She is the prime example of a woman using technology and social media to build a brand. She has over 40 MILLION followers on Instagram and this number continues to grow everyday. Though she is not an idol of mine and I do not respect many things that she does, she has used technology to build a brand of her own in which she profits a lot of money.

Free to be who you want to be <3
“ As Butler puts it, “This violence emerges from a profound desire to keep the order of binary gender natural or necessary, to make of it a structure, either natural or cultural, or both, that no human can oppose, and still remain human.”
This quote reminded me of an article that I read in my Women, Gender, and Society Class. The article talks about how as soon as one enters the world the individual is labeled, “it’s a girl” “it’s a boy” no one can make the decision to choose what they wish to be. The label is already pinned on them without them having a choice. Society also feeds into this labeling by generalizing behaviors, “if you are a girl you do this”, “if you are a boy you do that” if one argues with the “selection” the individual is deemed to be “weird” or “irrational”. It is truly unfair that individuals can not choose who or what to be because of this binary male/female. We need to break this code and introduce new change in the world so that people are free to be who they want to be.

Being confident in your own skin is very sexy. I think when you have fun and are yourself that is sexy too.
When I read the article “sexting as media production” I couldn’t help but to think of how the media want play down sexiness and claim that because women want to be sexy they are asking for whatever comes their way. What authorities and the media don’t recognize is that they are making women not be who they truly want to be. The blame of “whatever comes their way” needs to be put on the people responsible. Women should feel free to be sexy if they want to be without being fearful!

i know this transformation must be extremely painful for you, but just know that you’re not falling apart. you’re just simply falling into something different, with a whole new capacity to be beautiful.

In light of learning about women in technology and the assumptions of women only being consumers, I chose this picture because it perfectly expresses that women have way much more to offer than just their pretty face and their pretty penny. Women are innovators and are very smart intellectuals that are misrepresented and it is our job to shine light on that.

This week we read an article about computer hackers and geeks and I thought the article was interesting because through society’s eye geeks and hackers are said to be bad people. The article helped me to open my eyes a little more to see that hackers and computer geeks were not al bad people they were people interesting in decoding things and figuring programs out. Just recently Rutgers hosted an overnight hackers event at the Cook Student Center.

I was really frustrated in today’s discussion because I feel like one of the major problems in feminism is that we do not give credit when it is due. I absolutely commend Beyonce for appreciating her “black”. A lot of artist are afraid to stand for what they really believe in simply because they think they will lose fans. It was important that Beyonce did this because though she may have lost some fans she also could have gained more than what she lost simply for standing up for what she believes in. Job well done Beyonce!

I hate to say it, but shit really does happen. You just have to get over it. Beat the hell out of it by doing things that make you happy.
