bittersweet,  truth.

as with the name,  much of what you say is bittersweet.   you don't feel a need to sugarcoat things,  seeing it as far better to lay out all the facts,  whatever they may be,  rather than to hide things for the sake of protecting feelings.   while it is good to be honest,  take care you don't become cruel in your pursuit of truths.

she can handle herself,  that's what she wants to say.   but she doesn't due to the fact this girl came up to her in a moment with such concern.   it has her second guessing herself.   she could easily rip into her,  make her regret that she even spoke to regina.   but the kindness and grace she's showing her            “  i'm fine,  thanks.  ”     she looks a little shaken up,  and slightly annoyed if anything.     “  that just comes with the territory of being hot,  ”     an eyebrow raised as her lips quirk into a bit of a smile.   maybe she can be a little mean,  as a treat.     “  you wouldn't know about that though,  right?   is that why you're so concerned?  ”

a smile paints itself on lips pink with the lipstick she'd chosen for this.   since freddie came back into her life she feels whole again,  the fears of adulthood and losing control of everything seeming to slip away.     “  you're such a dork,  ”     she means her words so lovingly.

one of her love languages in a way was terms of endearment,  but regina seemed to pick stranger endearing terms then others.  instead of telling someone they're doing a good job,  she'll just lightly bully them.   or if it's any indication of her past relationships,  she'll bully them aggressively and then be shocked when they inevitably leave.

SHE TRIED SO HARD TO BE PERFECT FOR HER FATHER.  perfect meaning   ...   straight.   even if it meant leaving someone who regina had held to herself so dearly.   we all know where that led her.     “  i wish i could take back what i did.  ”     she goes quiet for a moment as she holds the bouquet that freddie had gotten her close to herself.   but she's being smart about it and holding it by the paper wrapped around the flowers.     “  these are beautiful by the way,  i love pink roses.  ”

IT’S LIKE HAVING A CRUSH ALL OVER AGAIN                   the sweat in her palms, the feeling of words getting stuck in her throat. it fills her chest with warmth, and her stomach twists for a second. a bundle of nerves, held tight between conditioned muscle and a wool sweater. her fingers still sting from accidentally grabbing the thorns on that bouquet of roses. she’s 20-something again. freddie has prayed for another moment like this   …   a second chance. “ and you make me feel everything all at once. ”   blue eyes, wide with fear, like regina is going to pull out a gun and like, shoot her for that. regina could, and freddie would thank her with her last dying breath. oh, fuck, she’s painfully in love. freddie might die, or throw up, or scream, or cry, but she’s so chill about this. “ no one else has done that. not between the decades of not being with you. ”

too many glasses of wine later and the topic of middle school is brought up.   she's not sure if it's supposed to be a funny reminiscent moment or if it's a personal dig at regina's character.   either way,  she's gone silent.   she's changed.   she was scared.   she's not the same sad little girl who'd thrown her friend's sexuality under a metaphorical bus all those years ago.   all in attempts to bring the attention away from herself and her own very complicated feelings when it came to janis.   she was sure that her friend had picked up on those feelings and was starting to figure her out and she was scared.   SHE NEEDED AN OUT,  and who knew that all of that would lead to regina being hit by a literal bus.

she will definitely regret everything that was said in their very heated argument they were currently in the middle of.  especially if the two of them had just rekindled some sort of friendship.

her fists are balled at her sides,  the wine glasses had been discarded on the counter top as she moves rooms.   the footsteps and yelling following behind her as she does so.   you can't run from it forever.   the words set her brain on fire because she has a point.   she's in a directionless marriage,  her daughter being the only thing keeping her there with him.   she feels trapped,  she's not happy,  not in the slightest.   there's only so far she can get with the life she'd chosen to lead.

WAS SHE STRAIGHT?   not in the slightest.   she'd come to those terms in college with a lot of experimentation,  but after bringing home a girl she was met with rage from her father.   she had to conform to his perfect idealized nuclear family portrait.   this was also the father she'd since cut out,  so was there really a risk if she just   ...   takes a leap?   a leap into her arms?

she turns fully to face the other,  around her eyes was stained with makeup           was she crying?  she was crying and hadn't even noticed.     “  i fucking wish i could just ...  ”     a frustrated groan because so much could be solved with proper communication.   but she never knows how to start that with her,   after all the time that'd passed.   talking to janis still felt like diffusing a bomb at times.     “  I WISH I COULD JUST HATE YOU,  and leave it at that.  ”     going quiet again as a look of shock coats her face because she fully just laid all her cards out for janis,  she hated this.

WHAT THE HELL ...  she thinks to herself for a moment.   what could be the worst thing that happens?   she's relaxing her fists,  the crescent shapes of her nails indenting her palms as she quickly closes the distance between the two of them.   her hands moving to hold janis's cheeks as she firmly presses a kiss on her lips.   all the care she could have in the world blowing away out the open window of the living room.

some shitty northshore reunion was in the works,  which led everyone from their class being in town at the same time.   REGINA WAS STILL SO CONFUSED THAT THEY DECIDED TO HOLD IT DURING THE WINTER AND NOT AROUND THE TIME THEY ALL GRADUATED.   but,  in all her years of life and navigating adulthood,  she realized that maybe she shouldn't ask such silly questions.   even though the thought lingered in the back of her mind.   so,  for old times sake she got her parents to agree to go out of town and crash at their place and well,  throw a rager.   she promised them she would clean up any mess that would inevitably happen.   but who knows?   maybe the drunken crazy teens had matured.   at least she hopes they have.

IF THERE'S ONE THING REGINA GOT GREAT AT IN THE PAST TEN YEARS,   it was planning parties and events.   hell,  that's what she did full time now as a career.   her marketing degree really took her far with that one.

this whole night leading her to reconnecting with certain people she'd fallen out of contact with.   SPECIFICALLY,  CADY HERON.   the girl who'd made her life a living hell throughout the later part of her senior year.   the same person who she still blames for getting her hit by a bus,  even if she had seen that bus coming out of the corner of her eye the entire time.

after cady goes silent and is staring up at the ceiling,    “  what   ?  ”     she takes a glance up herself.   swallowing hard as she really takes it in.   she hadn't realized that her mom was still into doing that super awkward tradition.   especially considering that her and her father had gotten divorced a couple years prior.     “  oh   ...  mistletoe?  ”     she asks,  with a laugh.   not at cady,   just at the fact that she's now in this position.   and her laughter isn't helping make this less awkward,  she's aware.

the truth is that regina if she hadn't come to terms with the fact she was a lesbian would've scoffed at the thought of such a public display of affection with another woman.   but here she is,  really debating it.   she'd left her exhusband because of the former fact and is now coparenting their three year old daughter with him.   and she'd be lying if she said that she didn't always think cady was cute,  truthfully,  even when she was pissed at cady she wasn't sure if it was true anger or jelousy at points.

“  RELAX,   i'm not going to just kiss you,  ”      she assures,  her tone not at all mocking.     “  unless you want me to,  ”     there's a momentary pause before she asks,     “  so,  do you want me to?  ”
