“I’ve been practicing.” Dick’s response was just as quick and there was a glimmer of amusement in his eyes.
He resisted the urge to lift his heels up onto the arm of the sofa, not sure John would appreciate him kicking off his shoes to do so. They weren’t that close, after all. Dick let his gaze sweep over the cluttered room, taking in all the strange and familiar items which covered almost every available surface.
“A tracking spell. I’m not certain, but Zee might not even be on this plane of existence or universe anymore. My tech can’t find her and I wondered if there was anything in your arsenal that could help?”
The quick response was to be expected and John let the younger man have the last word this time. If they kept carrying on with their banter they’d never get to the point of Dick’s visit.
A tracking spell. That was easy enough. But Zatanna was one clever woman. If she didn’t want to be found, she wouldn’t be.
“I have one or two things that might help.” John admitted, his concern for Zee outweighing the unease he felt by her disappearing act. He got up and moved to a cluttered desk in the back corner of the room, shuffling a few pieces of paper aside and finding a map. Bringing the map over he spread it out over the coffee table so Dick could see.
“Knowing Zee, she has cloaked her location. She’s too good to be tracked. But, with a little flick of the wrist -” at that, the magi waved his hands over the map, muttering a spell. Several lights lit up, glittering in small specks around the parchment. “We might be able to track the ones that were following her.”

“You can cut the act John. It’s not that good.” Dick narrowed his eyes, giving the mage a look that asked him to remember who’d trained him. All of the Robins could easily see through facades.
Right, Zee’s name would bring out the serious side to the warlock. Following John into his apartment, he closed the door behind himself and perched on the arm of the sofa. “I have no magical ability, so I need you to quit pouting and help. I don’t know what you did to piss her off enough to only ask me for help. But she knew I’d have to ask you for back up.”
The look and tone that was thrown in his direction was impressive yet it also amused the magician slightly. No one could hold down a menacing glare and harsh timbre like the Bat. But the boy wonder before him came awfully close.
“Yours, however, is getting better.” He quipped back, unable to help himself. “Try an octave lower next time, yeah?”
John’s eyes tracked Dick’s movements as the younger man entered his apartment and perched himself on the arm of the sofa. Dick had a point when he said Zatanna knew he would ask John for back up. And it must be serious if she were reaching out to him.
“Alright. What to you need help with?” John conceded, already feeling like he’d regret the decision.

“Wish I could say the state of you was unexpected,” Dick quipped as the door was opened to reveal a very crumpled warlock. He gave John an expectant look, before huffing out a sigh and folding his arms across his chest. “You forgot about our meeting?”
“Look, I know there’s weirdness between us. But we both care about Zee, and she needs our help, why else would she have sent that message?”
John let the quip about his appearance slide, instead focused on the expectant look. He wracked his mind trying to remember what he did to earn such a look but didn’t have to wait long as Dick soon supplied him with the answer. “Ah, that.” The magician’s response was almost flippant, leaving his excuse purposely open so the younger man wouldn’t get the impression he was reliable. “Something more important came up.”
The nonchalance dimmed on John’s face as Dick brought up Zatanna, sighing he pushed the door further open and wandered back into his apartment and plonked unceremoniously into the armchair. “For starters, she didn’t send me anything. That message was for you so what are you going to do about it?”

Thump! Thump! Thump!
A loud knocking startled the man from his slumber. With a sharp breath and a grumble, John Constantine pushed himself up off the sofa he had passed out on the night before. He looked a fright, clothes crumbled and hair in all manner of disarray, but John didn’t care. He wasn’t out to impress.
Thump! Thump!
“Alright, alright!” John called out, getting up and making his way to the door. “This had better be good.” He muttered under his breath as he swung the door open. He eyed the visitor critically, lips curling into a slight smirk.
“Well, this is unexpected…”

History:
Born in Liverpool, England on May 10, 1982, the only son of Tommy Constantine and Mary-Anne Quinn. His mother died giving birth to him and his father held a great resentment to him because of it. John’s childhood was full of abuse and he left home as a teenager.
At fifteen, he formed a band, Mucous Membrane, whose goal wasn’t really the music but to score. Around this time he also met Anne-Marie Flynn, who introduced him to the world of the occult. John quickly excelled in the dark side of magic and earned quite the reputation for himself.
In 2001, at nineteen, John gained the attention of Giovanni Zatara when the magician did a show in London. Zatara made an offer to train John but the young Constantine rejected the offer, his arrogance made him believe that there was nothing the older magi could teach him.
Nine years later, in 2010, John made the trip to New York to see what he could discover in the American shadows. He wandered into a bar where Zatara’s daughter happened to be putting on a stage show. John was smitten as soon as he saw Zatanna and after the show made his way to the stage door to meet her. However Zatanna’s then boyfriend, Nick Necro, was also waiting at the door and John realized he didn’t stand a chance. Surprisingly, Nick invited John to join them. It wasn’t long and the friendship grew to something more between them.
2011 saw John visit Lian Yu to find a manuscript that was assist in his, Nick’s and Zatanna’s quest to find the Books of Magic, the rumoured source of all spells. On Lian Yu, John met Oliver Queen and the pair formed an odd friendship once Oliver realized John’s intentions were good. Oliver stayed on the island but the pair remain in contact.
By 2014, John was back to being on his own. His relationship with Nick and Zatanna had soured after Nick became obsessed with finding the books. In his cockiness, John tried to save a young girl, Astra Logue, but failed and ended up sending the innocent girl to Hell and damning his own soul along with it.
After the incident with Astra, John checked himself into Ravenscar Asylum and remain there for 4 months. However the threat of the Rising Darkness pulled him back into the world of the occult.
Early 2015 saw John reach out to Zatanna and her father to help seal the darkness away. The spell went wrong and Giovanni Zatara paid the price. Zatanna swore to never speak to John again.
Later in the year, John was contacted by Oliver Queen to go to Star City to help restore the soul of Sara Lance. Oliver then also asked John for assistance with Damian Darhk but John just told Oliver to run.
2018 saw John consult the Legends in their face off with a demon named Mallus. The release of Mallus had broke the careful seal put in place 4 years earlier and the Rising Darkness began to slowly make a return. John is now on the trail to find a way to put a stop to it before all of magic and creation is destroyed forever.
