Jonathan Applebaum // Revitalize
ONE NIGHT ONLY //
The role between subject and observer is blurred. Images form organically, rejecting the manufactured and mechanical as scenes develop naturally, almost accidentally as if chance led the viewer. Deriving inspiration from natural moments of life occurring around him, Jon finds ways to layer modern life with faded past.
Though a photographer and video director by trade, Jonathan’s work delves into the grit of life, stirring a wistful melancholy in each of his pieces. His pieces are playful and emphasize the profound in single, simple moments.
Breathing life into old images that have been discarded, collecting dust, never be used again, Jon finds a place in the future that these images were never meant to see. These modern-vintage collages combine 1950′s magazine clipping with his contemporary photographs that exploit parallels between subjects. The juxtaposition of clippings and photos revives a strong sense of nostalgia intertwined with hope.
Refreshments will be served. Should you need to contact us: [email protected] ; [email protected].

Having a lack of space has plagued me throughout my personal life. It has also guided my artistic process. In turn, my works are inspired by architectural or domestic spaces that are often taken for granted or “overlooked”. For better or for worse, I am more aware of spaces that the average person might find irrelevant. My focus is on the in between, isolation, and separation of these spaces within their surroundings. It was in these irrelevant spaces where I found purpose…meaning…reason…space. The commonplace and commercially accessible materials became my palette along with the more established mediums of art. Home Depot and JoAnn Fabrics are my Dick Blick and Pearl Paints. Paper, fabric, and duct tape are my acrylics, oils, and charcoals. Because of the materials used and the architectural elements referenced, my work is associated with “Do It Yourself” themes. Using familiar commercial and home related materials, but in the context and creation of art, adds other levels to the conversations presented within the work. I do not romanticize these pieces. I am very deliberate with the manner in which the works are constructed and with an awareness of the materials that comprise the work. The materiality of the works creates a conversation where value expectations collide with architecture and institutions and the everyday.

Phreak N Queer Festival 2013 August 1st – 4th, Philadelphia PA
The Phreak N’ Queer Music and Arts Festival organizing committee consists of a multi-cultural/multi-gendered group of hardworking, community oriented, and socially conscious individuals working together to unite queer artists and our allies by reaching out to other individuals, groups, and collectives to help create change through art. We provide the stage for performers and visual artists to showcase their talents for you! These artists use their hearts, minds, bodies, and souls to draw us into their world of wonder and excitement. This year we are working together to create the second annual event of this magnitude and focus on the northeastern seaboard. To do this, we have set out to gather artists of several disciplines to help build community, raise awareness, and to celebrate the pioneers that have paved the way. This collective of multi-disciplined artists believe that visibility is necessary to create social change. The Phreak N’ Queer Music and Arts Festival committee is a group focused on visibility and progressive arts.

Tieshka Smith | Photographer
Email | Website | Facebook | Twitter | Blog | Youtube | Instagram | Flickr
Tieshka Smith is a Philadelphia-based social change photographer. She sees her work as a personally transformative experience, a guide to overcoming her fears and transcending artificial boundaries of race and class. She challenges prevailing notions of otherness, rejecting the idea of privilege as a series of benefits that can only be accessed by those who have been lucky enough to be born. She strives to redefine privilege as a celebration of humanity in all of its diverse forms. She envisions a world where people of all walks of life can enjoy a rich quality of life. Her work incorporates photography in the tradition of Gordon Parks, Vivian Maier, Henri Cartier Bresson, Jamel Shabazz and others, visual storytelling, collaborative mapping and other community engagement strategies in order to unearth and present information and stories about how people and informal networks in urban communities are affected by and confront urban renewal. It is a vehicle through which she explores the ways that marginalized people interact with one another and with shared but unsanctioned communal spaces. It is her goal to create images that facilitate dialogue and action around a range of socioeconomic issues that impact urban communities and the people who live in them. Smith has contributed work to APIARY magazine, Certain Circuits magazine, the Mt. Airy Patch, FIN magazine and other blogs and publications. Also, her work has been exhibited in galleries and other community spaces both in Philadelphia and the New York City area, including Project Greenville, Next City's Storefront for Urban Innovation, Eris Temple Arts and Flying Kite Media, via their On the Ground neighborhood initiative. A solo exhibit, “The Other Germantown,” opens July 13, 2013 at iMPeRFeCT Gallery. A Chicago native, Smith is a graduate of Northwestern University and Keller Graduate School of Management. She is a member of the board of Germantown United, CDC, and a member of the events committee of the Germantown Artists Roundtable group.

Mistress | Email | Website | Facebook | Youtube
(The lead guitarist is still Mita, however, there is another guitarist named Tom and a new drummer named Vince. A new singer who has yet to be publicly announced has just been hired) The throwback sound of Mistress is that of old school heavy metal with strong, memorable, dirty riffs and soaring, dynamic vocals. The origin of the band began in 2002 when Mita Khrichenko, guitarist, and Jesse Rucco, drummer, started the group over a bond in women and metal. After going through countless lineup changes over the next few years, Mistress finally found their perfect "frontman" in September of 2009 when Deanna Gardas joined the band. After several local shows throughout the following six months, Mistress began recording their first album. The lineup also included Ralph Beam on bass and Andrey Bogdanov on drums, who was featured on "Brains and Bruises", the end resulting full length. It was released in October of 2011. Shortly following this, Jesse assumed his prior position at the (drum) throne and Mistress eagerly welcomed a new member: Tom Gilbert. The recording of the second album "Heavy Mental" began during the summer of 2012. It features Deanna on vocals, Mita on guitars and bass, and Grom, a session drummer from LA on drums. The album is due out in April, 2013, with streaming tracks available online as well as a free digital download. The band parted ways with Deanna after the completion of "Heavy Mental" and is now on the search for a permanent singer and drummer to continue world domination!
