one of my fav things about the mother games is how they convey that even under the best of circumstances, growing up is inherently kind of traumatic. like when you learn your happy "normal" family actually has a strange and tragic history that nobody likes to talk about. or when you learn your neighbor's family is dysfunctional and abusive. or when you're lost or hurting inside or in need of support, and the adults around you don't seem to notice, and just blow you off. or when the adults you're supposed to trust are easily manipulated into doing evil things. or when sometimes they simply do evil things on purpose. or when you realize that the same capacity for evil exists within you, and you're gonna have to reckon with it.

like. there's a lot of really heavy & scary shit kids have to come to terms with as they grow up. and they have very little agency to deal with it on their own, which only amplifies the horror of it. and so often the adults around them don't help them process it - won't even acknowledge it's happening. kids and adults alike are expected to maintain a cheery stable facade around it all. which i think mother invokes well with its art style, and scenarios like what goes on in tazmily.

it's also refreshing how it's not heavyhanded at all. itoi never tells you how to feel about the unsettling realities his characters are faced with, and sometimes doesn't even call attention to it. but it's softly present everywhere. especially in the funny nonchalant dialogue from adult npcs, who overlook or downplay problems that seem apocalyptic from your perspective. these games are really honest about the quiet lonesome horror of being like 12 and having to deal with shit on your own, cuz no one takes kids seriously.
