Letters from Hayastan (Armenia) Letter no. 10

In Armenian, love and joy are often expressed through language rich in imagery of light. One such expression is «Աչքդ լույս լինի» (achqd luys lini), which directly translates to "light to your eye" or "may there be light to your eye". It's said to someone when we want to congratulate them on a happy occasion—such as a marriage, the birth of a child, or any other joyful event. Of course, the same phrase can also be used sarcastically. For example: "The car broke down. Light to our eyes! We’re stuck for hours.”

Then there is «աչքալուսանք» (achkalusank)—traditional Armenian term for good news, meaning “light to the eyes”, for sharing happy news is seen as bringing light to someone’s life.

We call someone very dear our «աչքի լույս» (achqi luys) or “the light of our eyes”, synonymous to the English "apple of the eye". And when we treasure someone or something deeply and guard them from harm, we say: «Աչքի լույսի պես եմ պահում»—I keep them as I'd keep the light of my eyes.
