Happy birthday to John Rutsey who would have been 73 on this day! Since he never gets enough credit or ever talked about, here is a brief summary about him:

John Howard Rutsey, born on July 23, 1952 was raised in Toronto Canada. He was the co founder, lyricist and original drummer for the Canadian progressive rock band "RUSH" formed in 1968. Rutsey played the drums on RUSH's first album release "RUSH" in 1974. Rutsey left the band right before the U.S tour, just after their first album was released. The reason was due to health issues - particularly diabetes which made touring difficult - and musical shifts. Rutsey preferred more classic sounding rock, while the band started leaning towards progressive rock, which didn't appeal to Rutsey.
RUSH found drummer "Neil Peart" replacing John Rutsey only 2 weeks before RUSH's U.S tour. Rutsey lived a quiet, and private life shortly after he left the band. Though he did keep in contact with the band members, he did not continue with his musical career and avoided the public eye. In 2008, Rutsey had passed away from a lifelong battle with diabetes. Even though John Rutsey's time was brief, he has helped shaped one of the most influential rock bands in history.
