ok i finally read those homophobia posts and it seems to mostly be about how certain characters like sokka, azula and toph have internalized homophobia (which is not the same as normal homophobia). honestly, a lot of it makes sense if you see these characters as queer considering the cultures and environments they all tend to grow up in.
like i can def see azula having internalized misogyny and homophobia. considering how shes forced to present herself (the fn is sexist enough said there) and her obvious comphet during the beach ep, its not a reach to consider that azula is repressed and thinks that queerness is wrong. the fire nation is already an imperialist patriarchal nation and given intersectionality, they're probably homophobic too since imperialism is inherently oppressive and azula would follow in that line of thought. this is just my opinion tho! no hate to you but i think this topic is much more nuanced than just "azula, toph and sokka are homophobic" cuz if you take their queerness into consideration its not so black and white.
no i mean i agree with you the issue was that this person kept joking about how katara was homophobic & it started to become like this weird prevalent head canon all over like twitter and some parts of tumblr too, like omg katara disapproves of her brother's relationship with zuko or whoever she's a bitch
i agree that the fire nation was homophobic, it was even stated in the korra comics, but that's not at all what i've been referring to. the idea of sexuality in the atla world is complicated and there's a lot to retcon there, especially in the show, but some fans like to see their headcanons about these characters sexualities as supreme and that's very odd. every sexuality headcanon is valid whatever it is, but you can't make one character being grossly homophobic a funny thing
basically yeah you make sense but we're talking about two different things

Why does it make you a bad person to headcanon a fictional character as homophobic (as a joke)? I definitely get uncomfortable with it too but isn’t it just fiction? It doesn’t mean comradekatara is actually racist, she maybe just has different taste in media
if you say a bunch of female characters are homophobic for your fun you need to uh??? reevaluate what you find fun? and it's harmful and misogynistic because it feeds into real world stereotypes surrounding particularly women of color and like, just because you can do whatever you want doesn't mean you don't have to consider how that impacts others in fandom? because when you say things like that on a social app when you have thousands on thousands of followers...you clearly want others to spread around your message...and they made that particular interpretation vastly popular, it's not like only they were affected by those claims. the real world is fucked enough why do you need your fictional characters to be homophobic? i don't even know what to say idk like anon it makes you uncomfortable, as a brown girl it makes me very very uncomfortable to think that is how people, even in fandom, jump to categorize and villainize women of color...
