The themes of self-discovery and self-acceptance in the raven cycle is so painstakingly beautiful because the characters realistically never could have gotten to that pinnacle by themselves

Like sure, at the end of the day, its really your own opinion of yourself that holds the most leverage towards self-worth. But that doesn’t mean that outside opinions don’t hold any weight, because they very, very much do. How can you learn to love yourself if no one else does? How can you accept love for yourself if you have never experienced it from another?

The reason each character learned to love themselves was because they helped each other get there. The gangsey saw the raw truth in one another—both the good n the bad; for a long time, each of these characters thought that those two things could never coincide, but slowly, by surrounding themselves with people who would accept them, they learned that it was ok. It was ok to be themselves, if was ok to have these flaws just as it was ok to have their good traits. They recognized both in one another and loved each other despite it, and that, that simple recognition was enough.

I feel we, as a fandom, do not talk enough about how gansey didnt get anything for his mom on her bday bc this sassy ass bitch rlly said HE WAS THE PRESENT

Everyone in trc always makes it a point to remind gansey of his privilege, and I wanna talk about how this has ultimately led him to be guilty of it.

Something I appreciate about trc is how gansey’s privilege in the raven cycle is depicted not simply as a privilege, but also as a weakness. How, because he’s the most privileged of the group, he feels the need to suppress his emotions due to the fact that he’s technically more better off than others. How he feels wrong for affording himself these feelings of hardship because in comparison his friends have had it much harder. This also adds to how he feels obligated to be the most collected one of the group, because, in some ways, he has suffered the least.

In his mind, gansey hasn’t earned himself the right to be sad, nor to be self-deprecating. His consciousness of his own wealthy upbringing is a big reason behind his emotional repression, which is why he so often shoulders the responsibility of being the leader, the one who brings others up, despite also being a person who needs that for himself.

Maggie explains the guilt of being privileged well, and though I am not trying to compare the character’s hardships in any way, I appreciate how she shows that life always has a silly way of creeping its ugliness into anyone who lives in it, no matter how well-off they may be.

Being wealthy does not exclude hardship.

GOSH, ronan lynch and his dependency KILLS ME

Throughout the book, many of Ronan’s actions and thoughts are often directly influenced by those around him. He is a character who thrives on companionship. This can be especially seen in his dreams, where most of his creations are out of consideration for the people around him (e.g the manibus, epipens, camaro, etcetc). And if not, then they are created to keep him company, like chainsaw, and Matthew, bred and borne out of his loss and loneliness.

Aside from that, his arcs mainly grow around his reactions toward those of others, the most prominent of all being the death of his father, where he struggles to find the remaining pieces of himself after losing him. Even in his search towards what it means to be a dreamer— though it is definitely fueled by his need for self-discovery— it also holds great relation to what truth it will grant him about his father.

But what really spurned this whole rant for me tho is ch 46, where he explicitly asks gansey, “Tell me what to do,” “Tell me where to go,”

this scene BROKE ME and it gives such clear insight as to what Ronan Lynch’s character is. He is a character of devotion who’s reliance on others is as much his downfall as it is his strength. He hardly ever does things out of thought for himself, though it isnt very obvious. (WHICH IS ANOTHER THING I WOULD LOVE TO RAVE ABOUT BUT ILL STOP MYSELF FOR TODAY) In this specific scene, ronan is at a loss with himself. He knows what he wants, but he NEEDS a higher being to guide him, needs someone to tell him whether what hes doing is right or wrong. Basically, ronan is a racing car with no sense of direction.

This is probably one of the reasons why Gansey and Ronan get along so well. Gansey is a character whose crippling self-worth is heavily reliant on helping others (sorry gansey but its true). It makes him feel useful, needed, it makes him feel worthier of being brought back to life. So to have Ronan, a mess of a person (sorry ronan), a person who relies on HIM of all people, it makes gansey feel secure, just as it does with ronan. They tether each other. Like, gansey just fully takes ronan in in all his shambles and is like YES! LET ME TAKE CARE OF U! I NEED THAT JUST AS MUCH AS U NEED THAT! ILY!

ALSO this is probably one of the reasons why, on the other hand, Gansey and Adam clash so often. Unlike Ronan, Adam is a highly independent character, he likes doing things his own way, half bc his past bludgeoned him to be used to doing them on his own. This conflicts with Gansey’s character whose ingrained need to be of help to others is constantly being rejected and abhorred by mr one man army adam

oh dear, thinking about trc on a school night and how its rllyrlly just about learning to love life and yourself and everyone and everything. About falling in love with the world in both the simple and larger things, and overwhelming you in the love u have for both; like laughter that makes ur stomach ache, or a quest that often feels bigger than ur own self. Just simply feeling alive, insanely insanely alive, sm so that you realize both your grief and happiness can coincide together at the same time
