Is this true? What do you think?
Groups protesting the shark cage-diving industry in New Zealand are now using footage of a great white shark attacking two film crew members on a small boat to highlight what they see as a growing problem. Two film crew members can be seen on a small inflatable boat when suddenly, a shark lunges and can be seen trying to bite the dinghy's rope connecting it to a larger boat. Fisherman Richard Squires told the newspaper he was attacked by sharks recently -- and believes sharks are getting more comfortable around boats because of cage diving. The Herald added New Zealand's First Members of Parliament Clayton Mitchell and Winston went to a public meeting about the shark problem last week.

Each year, Newsday does a terrific job of highlighting our dynamic environmental education program, “ A Day in the Life”. Last year, 1,200 students were on the Carmans river, Nissequogue river and the Peconic Estuary doing hands on citizen science work. Can you tell us about some of the other programs out there that instill life long learning?

Police captured a young, female coyote outside a cafe in a residential area of lower Manhattan on Saturday, the latest in a series of coyote sightings in New York City, where an increasing number of the predators are making their home. An emergency operator fielded a 911 call early Saturday morning reporting a coyote sighting at North Cove Marina near Battery Park City, said Detective Annette Markowski, spokeswoman for the New York Police Department. It was placed in a cage and transported in a police cruiser to Manhattan Animal Care and Control for examination. "It is healthy and will be released into an appropriate wilderness area somewhere in New York City, probably today," said a spokesman for the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation.

You’re much more likely to be injured or die during your evening run than in a shark attack, but don’t expect to turn on the Discovery Channel and see Sneaker Week.

Sharks are incredibly unlikely to bite you. They’re even less likely to kill you. However, we remain fascinated with their ability – and occasional proclivity – to do just that.

Two things you can do today to celebrate Earth Day. #1- Clean up after your pup and #2- plant native plants to attract wildlife. What else could you do?
