Best Table Tennis Player in the World [As of Aug. 2018]

Want to know who’s the Best Tennis Player on the #1 World Ranking?

There is one governing body called ITTF (International Table Tennis Federation) who decides the ranking and arranges the player accordingly. But what are the parameters taken into consideration? How does the ITTF operate? Read on to find out.

Best Table Tennis Player in the World

ITTF was founded in the year 1926 by William Henry Lawes, along with the 9 founding members including Austria, Denmark, England, Sweden, India, Wales, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, and Germany. The first international tournament happened in January 1926, Berlin while the World Table Tennis Championship was carried out the same year in December in London.

It’s the ITTF which sets and modifies the game rules. They analyze the game rules, techniques and then checks if any changes could be done for the betterment.

There are different categories for players like Men’s General, Women’s General, Men U21, Women U21, and similarly for U18 and U15. 

All the categories have a Men and Women set different, therefore we will list the Best player for both the sets. The Best Table Tennis Players as per the ITTF rankings are given below-

General Category

This category players don’t fall in any age group though, that’s why it is called the General group.

Men’s Group

Fan Zhendong from China is currently the Number 1 player in the Men’s Single Category, as per ITTF ratings. He is leading all the players with a total of 17001pt. He was the youngest player among all when he joined the Chinese Table Tennis Team in 2012. You won’t believe this, that he held the No. 2 position for 29 consecutive months. He is the STIGA sponsored athlete, and he is currently using the Stiga Infinity VPS V Blade. He is a right-handed firm-grip player and has an attacking style of play.

Women’s Group

It’s another Chinese player who is holding the No.1 position in the Women’s General Set. I am talking about Zhu Yuling, born in Mianyang and she started playing the Ping Pong game at a mere age of 5!

Then she and her mother moved out of the city so that she could get better training, and at the age of 12 she made the provincial team and by the age of 15 she made up to the national team. She practices for 9 hours a day along with her academic studies. This is why she gets to spend very less time with her family.

U21 – Under 21

There is some immensely talented player in the Under 21 group that we shall find out.

Men’s Group

Lin Yun-Ju holds the No. 1 position in the U-21 Men’s group. His native is Taipei, in China and was the center of attraction during the qualification tournament which was held for the Men’s Singles 2018 at the Seamaster World Tour Platinum Open.

This 16-years old champion won against Portugal’s João Monteiro and got placed in the first place on the ITTF rankings. He has a total point collection of 12,150pt. Women’s Group

Chen Ke got the title in the U-21 Women’s game organized by the ITTF. It was during the Seamaster 2017 ITTF World Tour German Open, where Chen Ke won the Women’s title alongside Xue Fei receiving the Men’s title.

She holds the World Rank of #53 after she won the World Tour Hong Kong Open held on 24th May 2018. The game was against Wang Yidi of China. This 21-years old has already broken many records, awaiting more achievements on Chen’s way.

This section also shows the General Category players who are on the TOP 5 category. These are the players who are on their way to make their positions on #1 or those who already had.

LIU Shiwen

LIU is a Chinese Player, and she has won 4 times World Cup, 4 times Asian Cup Champion, 3 times the World Tour Grand Finale. Also, she held the No. 1 position for 9 consecutive months from Jan to September 2010. Currently, she is on the #2 rank among the Women’s Singles players. There is a bit of confusion with the rankings, yet she is not on a rank less than the 3rd position.

XU Xin

Again it’s a Chinese Table Tennis Player XU Xin who is currently the No.2 player on the World Rankings. He is a STIGA sponsored athlete, and he is using the Stiga Intensity NCT as the main blade for all his games. He falls among those few pen-hold tennis players, even though he belongs to a place where most of the younger generation players follow the shake-hand style.

He is 28 years old and is a left-handed player with an amazing tennis playing form.

CHEN Meng

Chen Meng is the Winner of the 2011 World Junior Table Tennis Championship which was carried out for the Girl’s Singles. She was successful in all the 2017 Seasmaster ITTF World Tour games, which was held in Australia, Qatar, and Germany. The Seamaster win in Astana led Chen Meng to rise to the Top World Rankings.

BOLL Timo

Boll started playing the game at the age of 4 and was coached by his father during initial days. He ranks second on the German Table Tennis League and is on the No. 3 in the World rankings by the ITTF. When he was 8 years old, Helmut Hampel discovered his talent and agreed to provide him with more training on the game.

During the first half of 2004, Tim faced issues related to back pain problem but nevertheless contributed to the game in the best way he could by winning a silver medal.

LIN Gaoyuan

Lin is a Chinese Ping Pong Player, and he was the Asian Cup Champion of 2017. He is a left-handed tennis player who follows an attacking style of playing with the shakehand grip on the paddle. Also, he was part of the Chinese Team that won Gold Medals at the 2018 World Cup and 2018 World Team Championships.

Table Tennis which is also known as Ping Pong is a recreational activity that refreshes our mind and body like no other game. It is usually played between 2 players where they have to hit a small ball using a bat from one side to another. The ball and the bat are better known as the ping pong ball and ping pong paddle.

If you are planning to set up a Ping Pong match at your place, then it’s compulsory to have a Table Tennis Table. Otherwise, how is it even possible?

That was a definitely a lame question!

Today, we’ll be reviewing a new market dominator JOOLA 2000-S. You can’t call yourself a tennis fan if you haven’t heard the brand name of Joola. It’s the same brand that sponsors all the Tennis Tables for the US Open and other World Table Tennis Championships. The brand and their production began in the year 1952, it was during this year Joola produced the first tennis table.

After a long production and marketing processing, Joola acquired Amazon as their biggest customer in the year 2008. In the year 2012, Joola partnered with the USATT which is a non-profit governing body that manages and controls the national tennis tournaments that are held in the country.

That’s how Joola has emerged as a brand, and today we have the Joola 2000-s model for review. Marc gifted me the table long back, and I was lazy enough to test it. Finally made out some time, and played a game on the 2000-s along with my mother. It was a Sunday evening, me and mom at the Tennis table. A relaxing thought, indeed!

JOOLA 2000-S Review

Joola 2000-s comes with a metal framing of 50mm size, and it’s the classic stand-table. If you have used any of the Joola tables before, then you won’t take much time getting set with this one.

The base has a powdered coated metal design and is found to be pretty sturdy as well. There are a hell lot of features of this Joola table that I will be listing down.

How Ping Pong Paddles Evolved to Give You the Current Model?

The game of Ping Pong started during the 1800s itself and the craze is still high! During this period, there have been many advancements and changes that took place in the design of the Ping Pong Paddles.

Most of the ordinary paddles come in a dimension like 15 cm across, and 25 cm long. This measurement is including the length of the handles, which are 10cm by 4 inches. Initially, the ping pong paddles were made with a hollow design just like that of a small drum. So how it turned into the sophisticated modern paddle which we get these days?

How Ping Pong Paddles Evolved

We will check out the design in their chronological order, starting from where it all started and how the paddles were designed during different periods:

1800-1900

At first, the paddles used to have long handles and a banjo kind of structure on the head portion. This banjo thing, the paddle used to make a sound as the ball is hit using this racket. That’s how the name Ping Pong came into existence.

After this, a short-handled paddle entered the market and they replaced the long-handled racket. These paddles were made of vellum battledore, which was made of animal skin. Whereas vellum is a material which is used as a paper form, especially for old documents and other religious stuff.

This followed an era came where paddles where made from different materials and also in different sizes. Here the wooden racket was of the plain design, without much designing on it.

Then rackets with the sandpaper fixed on them were released. This idea was adopted in order to add some spin to the ball. Here the sandpaper is cut in a round shape and then fixed on the head portion of the table tennis racket.

Later the sandpaper fixed paddles were replaced with the cork-faced rackets. All these changes happened during the beginning of 1900.

1920-1950

At first, a pimpled rubber racket was released. It had a canvas backed with a rubber sheet fixed on the back side, along with a studded surface.

Rackets with the extra-wide surface were then released with the pimpled rubber on one side. It was one of the preferred rackets by the defensive players at that time.

Later, during the initial 1950s, a new waffle sponge racket came into existence.

It was in the same time period when the first ever Japanese racket was introduced. It had a soft sponge on the surface which was about 10mm in thickness.

Then came the crepe-rubber made tennis paddle but it didn’t work out well for the players. It was found that these paddles gave less control over the ball, so it soon was out of the league.

1960 – Present

During the start of 1960, the pimpled rubber handles were back in the market. These pimples were 1mm thick, and these paddles arrived with the sponge covered on the surface. It was found to be easy for all types of play, except that it had some drawbacks with a spin nature.

After the 1mm pimpled rubber next came the 2mm pimpled rubber paddles. These were found to be good on the play, but the spin issue yet remained unsolved. So, both the 1mm and the 2mm handles didn’t last for a long time.

The next racket that came in the lot was a great breakthrough in terms of innovation and functionalities. It was designed in a way to counter all the topspin shots made, by absorbing them on the paddle surface. So, these surfaces were capable of absorbing all the topspin shots easily.

Paddles with high spin and speed qualities were added. This racket came with a 1mm reverse rubber surface on it.

Then a complete reverse rubber sponge racket was introduced for adding the best kind of control.

This is how the Ping Pong Paddles evolved throughout the time when it was started in the year 1800. A lot of changes and modifications so that you can have a good play and better control over the game.
