forest witch: here grew willows and alders, their trunks twisted like giants’ sinews. around them bark lichen bloomed blue-white in the darkness. it felt like a good place, where there was old magic.

apartofexistence:
At least he got something out of his question, told to not to be startled when he encountered said unique life of the swamp.
As Oliver continued on, not letting his guard down to the swamp floor, he told Piper about his client.
“Mr. Aves… he man’s been a kind eccentric for a long as I’ve known him. He runs an orphanage, and is the type of person that’d be enjoying activities even more than the kids they’re for would. Normally, he’d ask me to run errands like picking up groceries or escorting the orphanage kids around town, but this current errand I’m doing has something to do with his past.”
“As for the target of my search, Mr. Aves just told me how I’d be able to find it, and nothing about what it actually is.”
“Ah, he sounds like a kind man,” Piper agreed, looking back to Oliver with a grin. “He must really depend on you to be able to do all that. This seems like quite a lot of work for one person, though. Are there others like you working for this man?” She seemed genuinely curious, but there was some weight in her tone.
As she finished her question, she ducked under a flowering branch and pushed it up for the other to follow--though Oliver was taller and she offered a sheepish smile in apology for making him duck anyway.

d-irtycomputer:
Juniper picked up her backpack in order to put her weapons away and pick up her other limited belongings before she would be getting sleep. She didn’t need the food container or water canteen urgently, so she allowed Piper to continue eating and drinking. At the camp, there was a lot of homemade containers to go around— it wasn’t much of a loss to lose a few. “Nothing’s gonna be safe when traveling this close to the city where all the Infected are; doesn’t matter what time of day it is. I just need rest in case one of ‘em sees us and we need to run.” Juniper honestly said. She would’ve liked to leave as soon as possible, but after being chased not too long before, her body was exhausted.
When Piper repeated her name - something that was already given to Juniper in the beginning of their conversation - the brunette was rather amused to say the least. The other probably didn’t recall giving her name because it happened when a gun was pointed at her; that sort of thing can scare people out of remembering the simplest of things. “Already told me your name, babe.” She hummed, hanging the backpack strap over her shoulder. She was planning on looking around the house to see if the bedrooms would be safe to sleep in. If not, she would catch her slumber on the floor in the living room. “I’m Juniper. You can call me June, though. Either works.” She offered her own name to Piper, giving a short nod. “I’m gonna try to find a bed to sleep in. I’ll see you in a few hours?”
Piper nodded a bit, watching Juniper gather her things as she continued to pick at the food. “Ah...” she acknowledged lamely. “Yeah, I don’t want to get caught exhausted. So not at all.” She scratched at her cheek, struggling to recall the last time she wasn’t tired. The life took its toll, but she felt hopeful: living in a camp among other survivors would have to help.
She watched Juniper finish packing up, and bit into a green vegetable. It was awfully kind of her to leave the food to Piper. Though when she gave her name, and Juniper responded, it clicked that the other was right. She felt her ears warm as she recalled squeaking her name out in the tension. “Oh, I did, sorry,” she said meekly. “June, yeah. Thanks,” she recovered with a small cough and played with the food behind her fingers.
“I’ll be out here. I don’t know how long I was out, but I’ll try to get some rest,” she agreed with a nod. “And thanks for, uh, not shooting me.” Her smile returned, though shy.

“Yeah?” Juniper was quite relieved that Piper didn’t turn down the opportunity to travel with her to the camp. It would’ve been stupid for her to not go, at least Juniper thought so. Piper, in her eyes, was lucky to have lasted so long on her own in a world like this, and there was no telling how much longer she could’ve continued to survive on her own. The camp would be safer, and food  would be consistent, and medicines were available. Piper deserved the “break,” and the socialization with other people who aren’t Infected.
Juniper watched when the blonde girl had kindly offered her own water back to her. While she still fully thought that Piper needed the water more than her, she decided that a little sip would be fine. “Mhm.” Juniper hummed with a nod in confirmation. She tilted her head back to take a sip of the water from the canteen, holding it out for Piper once more. “A lot of the people who come to the camp either found it, or we found them like I found you. We’ve never had any issues with people causing harm to others since Andrew — the man who runs the camp — he’s super strict on kindness to our own.” She explained, hoping that it gave the girl more comfort about seeing others again.
“I’m leaving at dawn after I get some sleep. I’ll wake you if you’re asleep too - and you should try to get rest. Takes a couple of hours to get to camp from this place.” Juniper gave her little plan, along with the simple suggestion of resting before their early morning hike.
It was hard to tell exactly, but Piper began to assume the other was around her age. So if she was able to trust and live among four hundred other people, maybe Piper would be okay, too. She smiled lightly again as she was offered the canteen, and she took another gulp of water. It tasted far better than the dirty water she’s been drinking as she could find it. “It’ll be nice to meet to Andrew,” she decided aloud, committing the name to memory. Andrew and... Her brows furrowed: she didn’t know the other’s name quiet yet.
Piper blinked as she told her the plan. “Ah, I guess it’ll be safer than traveling while it’s dark,” she agreed, looking  out the door they had entered. She wasn’t sure how well she would sleep, if at all. Part of her was exhausted after barely surviving for the last several days, but another part of her was re-energized by the food and the prospect of living among a society again. Worst case would be that she doesn’t sleep, and at least one of them is awake to keep watch.
“I’m Piper, by the way,” she added, glancing back to the other.

apartofexistence:
Well that was slightly demoralizing, the fact that he hadn’t gotten far at all. There was a solid reason as to why it aught not be, but it was still demoralizing. Hopefully his client hadn’t meant ill by not mentioning the swamp’s magical-ness.
“… I didn’t know I had been sent into a magical swamp,” he said, slightly miffed for a second or two.
While Piper was observing the tree bark, Oliver took heed of her advice on water holes. He lightly lowered his advancing foot as he moved, putting weight on it only when he felt it was fine to.
“So, are there any other ways the magic in this swamp becomes apparent?” He asked, figuring that he would need some more information if he was to go further in.
Piper didn’t respond right away. But she finally stepped away from the tree to turn away and continue walking with Oliver. “There are many. They’ll be more apparent the deeper we venture--if we must get that far,” she answered vaguely. “There is lots of...unique life, as well. Try not to be startled.”
Unlike her new companion, she stepped easily and carefree. Her familiarity with the swamp would grow more and more apparent. “Tell me more about this client of yours. And their box,” she prompted curiously.

I don’t have a name for her, but there was a swamp guardian before Piper--someone decades older than you’d believe a human can live. I’m thinking Piper may have to deal with enemies with a personal vendetta not against her, but against the previous guardian.
