I couldn't sleep last night so here is my 2 depictions of Elias and Ibarra's first meeting.

First one is how I interpret the scene in the novel:

I tweaked the dialogue a bit to make it more comprehensive to modern readers but this is just my interpretation, so sorry if my characterization of Ibarra is innacurate. I'm basing his personality based on what I read about him so far.

Btw, what does "there was a note of regret in the helmsman's voice" even mean?? Was Elias like:

Just read a veeery interesting article about clarita & a reading of her that essentially boils down to her being a symbol of the ph in that time (& to an extent, the ph now) along w how her relationship dynamics w padre damaso, ibarra &, surprisingly (as I thought that the 3rd guy in her life would be kapitan tiago😶‍🌫️), elias further cements this reading. As someone who's Starved of el noli literary analysis for the women, specifically, as clarita tends to get reduced as a character who was based on rizal's lover (& being the ideal filipino woman & nothing more...), I'm quite a fan on how the author argues this reading nod nod. There's quite a lot of academic articles written on how el noli Furthered the revolution, but hardly any character analysis (save for the posts here) at all which is🤔hmm.

Anyhow, I'll go through the depths of finding such reading materials to pass the time because there's no archive of the multitude of el noli musicals APPARENTLY
