Dev Diary #3 (March 13, 2025) - First Appearance Reveal & Pushing Boundaries
(For anyone reading this who isn't aware, I'm currently deep in development on a DLC-sized custom voice-acted follower & quest mod named 🌸Seraph🌸 Make sure you're following me on Tumblr & join the Pixiebomb Discord for progress on her!)
Hi there! 🩷 It's been a while since I've done one of these! I promise it's not because nothing is getting done, quite the opposite in fact. I wanted to wait to release another Dev Diary until her visual centerpiece, which is being custom designed by the talented 3D artist @legendaryfirewizard was completed & ready to be shown off, & with that do an entire character bio to start sharing more about who the character is & not just what the mod will be. BUT since that's going to take a bit more time, I figured I would go ahead and share the first preview of Seraph's appearance (minus the special visual thinggg) & talk a bit about some of what I've been working on currently. This is the biggest project I've ever worked on, by far. Seraph will be releasing at a scope more similar to a small Skyrim DLC in amount of content than a standard follower mod, and with that I've been finding joy in pushing myself to do things with her that I've done sparingly, or never at all, in the past (including with Redcap, looking at how I developed him vs. how I'm developing Seraph it's shocking how far I've come & how much my approach has changed from those early days): 🌸 I've been doing a lot more quest commentary and interactions with vanilla content & NPC's with Seraph than I ever did with Redcap, & though I generally do prefer adding new quests & original content than commenting on vanilla stuff, engaging with the existing Skyrim quests & NPC's more has been really neat to do bc Seraph already exists in the civilized world of Skyrim before the player meets her, so I'm finding a lot of ways to add value TO the vanilla game & the content people have already played (or just ignore) via her being so much more a part of the world in that sense. Seraph hasn't been everywhere in Skyrim, some cities will still be new or unfamiliar to her, but in the places she has, she does know people & there is often history there, to various degrees.
🌸 With the scope of Seraph's multi-act questline, I'm doing more dungeon, interior, and player design than I've ever done. With Redcap I think I made one single new interior, with Seraph I'm designing player homes, and new dungeons...That's homeS and dungeonS, plural. It feels great to express creativity in modding in ways I haven't done before, & this is pushing my boundaries all around.
I'll have to leave this Dev Diary there, & maybe the next one will include the full character bio & a more in-depth look at the character. I am genuinely putting all of my love & passion into this project, & I hope others will love going on adventures with her when that day comes 💗 - Pixie (Mod Author, Voice Actress) Join us on Discord - https://discord.gg/XZ4VaKaPZg

This just remains true & sometimes it makes me regret having published art in the first place. I love making characters & writing stories but wow people are just aggressive & weird for no reason like how dare a girl make a fictional goblin surely this is grounds to be aggressive towards her & make her feel uncomfortable & scared & sad
I love Redcap as a character he's like my child & Seraph is the greatest artistic expression I've ever engaged in & ultimately I make my art for me. But sometimes I wish I didn't 🫤
I don't want to be too soap-boxy about this, it's more of a personal vent than a PSA, I guess.
Creators/mod authors are not the characters they create.

I've done game dev & made art in video game spaces for years now, & something I've noticed happening more and more is that people form one-sided parasocial relationships with, and unrealistic/unhealthy expectations/perceptions of creators based on characters they happen to create.
The way people treat me when they only know my work vs. the way they treat me in person or when they know what I look like is INSANE. The assumption that you know anything about a person based off a character they made is honestly wild, & being treated poorly based on this in various ways is something that not only myself but many mod authors have dealt with, in one way or another.
It's not even limited to open cruelty, which does happen. It's little comments. The way people treat one mod author vs another. It often leans worse towards women, which is a whole other conversation I don't have time for here.
I just like...urge people who enjoy art, who interact w creators in public spaces and discuss their work, to evaluate whether or not your assumptions are healthy. Should you be assuming a creator's gender, disposition, personality, or otherwise based on a fictional character in a fantasy world? Or should you treat them as they are, as real separate people, and not just their characters that you enjoy (or dislike)?
Anyway, this is just a stream of consciousness, more than anything. Be kind to people. My mental health has been negatively affected more times than I can count by someone treating me as someone I am not based on only knowing my work, and I'm far from the most affected by these kinds of things. Just know that creating characters & stories & art in these spaces requires immense passion, patience, and time from our lives 🩷
🌸 Also follow this blog and join the Discord for Dev Diary updates for my new custom voice-acted follower Seraph, who I am creating to allow myself more of a voice to express myself, bc I don't want to give up creating in these spaces. 🌸
