BODY LANGUAGE : 01.  actively averted gaze, more often than not.   02.  gestures / moves arms and hands often. covers ears when hearing something unpleasant, gesticulates while she talks, uses cigarettes / joints as a conversational prop of sorts, physically pushes herself away from tables as she gets up, things of this nature. 03.  keeping still and compact for impressive lengths of time, always jerking back into motion when the need arises.  hints at the more lively nature she’s actively trying to bite back. full-bodiedness she’s denying. 04. eye rolling.

AESTHETICS : 01.  realizing, all too young, that you are sad. people always seem disappointed, disinterested, and you are sad. 02.  the occasional, envious glance at a house next door, one where cats gather and one with shade. beautiful, serene, until your mother quite literally uproots it and those pleasant, cat-feeding people are on the way out.    03.  very desperately craving some kind of reassurance. you sure as hell aren’t finding it in yourself, you sure as hell aren’t finding it in your friends, and while you once -- at some younger, more innocent time -- might have tried bringing this up to the people who ought to have cared the most, you were met with preoccupation and disinterest. you know better, these days, and have wisely decided you’ll just stew in it until you can leave, and then... 04.  the loathed ability, picked up through sheer proximity, to grow stunning, perfect roses. with no hands, no eyes, and soil more gravel than earth, they’d manage to crop up and leer. they’ve been in the yard since childhood, in the house since childhood, adorning tattooed arms and home decor and neighboring lawns all through adulthood. they’re a fact of life, but you reserve the right to hate them. There’s the possibility attracting some roving teacher’s attention is, in fact, the point, but he doesn’t strike her as the ratting type. Nonetheless, it’s an Angela-less moment, and without the buffer of a more forward personality, she’s a touch easily rattled, not that she would prefer it show. An exhale, all smoke, and a half-empty pack is lazily extended toward him.

Her father lingered, dropping her off. There’s no telling how much anyone might have seen or heard, but anything would be too much. Just a little sick to her stomach, talking bitterly through it seems the safest means of possible damage control. Even when he’s at his full confidence, he’s so impossibly pathetic, so lowly...

She turns, and realizes as she does so this is the first she’s been the one to try and instigate conversation all but out of the blue. “Working theory, anyway. There’s got to be an explanation for how parents start behaving, right?”

“Are you okay?” This is far from an uncommon question, which speaks volumes about the both of them given the short period in which she’s been familiar and openly fond enough of him to bother asking. There’s something permanently ambiguous seeming about him she can’t articulate, but makes getting an accurate read...tricky. She’s getting there, but there’s a learning curve.

“Hard to tell when you’re just thinking about something or if something’s...wrong.” Her eyes dart to one particular eyebrow of his. No attempt is made to disguise it, and if asked she would state just as frankly that her focus is on the still-new scar tissue. “You’d tell me if something was, right?”

It’s a genuine question, and a probe, carefully searching for a crack in that utter, intense confidence her friend seems to exude. It’s difficult to believe anyone could be so sure of so much, particularly at their age, but Jane has known Angela for some time and not once has that vision of the future seemed to sway.

Small reminders Jane’s parents were garbage parents and were she not so resilient she could have slipped through the cracks in some very scary ways no.3720382: Carolyn sees her husband dead in their kitchen and her first reaction is to feebly try and hide what could potentially incriminate her. Her first thought is possible accountability. Bear in mind: 

- Either she saw Jane and Ricky still there in the kitchen ( at no time is it more apparent AB was meant to be a stage play than those final scenes because Where the fuck even is everybody ), and didn’t say anything to or try to comfort her daughter

- Didn’t see Jane or Ricky and, while having absolutely no reason whatsoever to NOT believe the killer isn’t still in the house and perfectly aware that kitchen is ripe for traumatizing someone, didn’t go look for her daughter

It is very possible she has some doubts as to the truthfulness of his statement, but they’re quiet and benign and it isn’t the sort of issue that needs to be pressed aggressively. Hardly an ‘issue’, even; more a curiosity. To have spent so much time away and lived so much and retained that confidence of his would be incredible, impossible-seeming – but then, that he had it at all was just as much so. 

( Everyone, after all, has reasons to be afraid. He seems more isolated now than she’d ever known him to be, and that could rattle anyone. Even as the odd teen he’d been, he’d had family and classmates and spectators, as opposed to his current self. People don’t even murmur about him anymore, until and unless they hear the name, at which time it becomes about events rather than people. Jane, being Jane, worries. )

“Encouraged, even.” Carefully, almost daintily, she puts an arm through and around one of his. Her head comes to rest against his shoulder, both a comfortable gesture and a move to spare the both of them the intense observational spotlights that are eye contact for just one moment. Give him space to fess up, if needed. She adds, with a warm and sweet little laugh, “You’ve got me here to take care of you, doesn’t get safer than that.”
