endlessly rambling about francis at 1 am + angsty little insights to his mental state

the thing about francis is that he has idolized humanity to the point of. delusion. he has truly put earth on such an insanely high pedestal, given it expectations that there is a 0% chance it would be able to live up to. he is utterly obsessed. his obsession is a form of escapism in a lot of ways. it allows him to fantasize about an idealized world away from the unending scrutiny of invasive researchers desperate to harvest his dna. idolizing earth allows him to picture a world where he belongs and is accepted—to him, that is paradise. he is obsessed with the idea of being "human" because he desperately wants to be treated like one. on his planet, he is not regarded as a living being with feelings. he is simply science, a means to an end, a resource to be taken advantage of to his fullest extent. and sometimes, further than his furthest extent.

truly, his life on goreon wouldnt be so bad if he werent simply seen as an experiment. he would get on just fine, and probably never would have developed such an obsession with earth.

the idea of earth energizes him. despite the hell he is met with at any given moment, he maintains hope. he keeps his spirits up. his obsession with earth keeps him sane in the short term, but will ultimately be his downfall.

just get through one last dubiously ethical experiment. one last vial of blood. one last scar. one last greedy scientist. one last bag of nutritional mush. one last day. earth is all he has to look forward to, and he grips onto the idea of it with all of the strength left in his hands weak from the blood loss. truly, i dont think he would value his life, like... at all... if he werent so grateful to be a part of humanity; the thing he idolizes above everything else. and really? he isnt a part of humanity at all. biology and emotion are all that connect him to earth, but culturally, he is indistinguishable from anyone else on goreon (maybe a little bit because his life experiences are very atypical). he will never be able to swallow that pill. and that sums up francis for ya
