CHARACTER PLAYLISTS: Galileo Galilei
Playwright Claire Willett has curated a collection of Spotify playlists for each character from our upcoming play Dear Galileo - opening August 8th at CoHo Productions! Tickets on sale HERE. Follow us on Tumblr or Facebook for more inside scoop on the play!

(Chris Porter as Galileo Galilei)
Thanks so much to Dear Galileo sound designer Annalise Albright Woods, who guest-curated this playlist with music from the show! Here’s what she had to say about how she approached the sound design for this production:
“It's more intuitive really. I just know if something has the right feel, rather than having a logic I can explain. Generally, for the entire playlist, we wanted a sound that was timeless. One that combines the vastness of space and divinity with the precise execution of science. So we looked to some of the most timeless composers . . . Bach, Vivaldi, Corelli and their contemporaries. I tried to largely select songs that weren't too well known - familiar maybe but not overdone. But a couple snuck in that most everyone will recognize.”
(EDITOR’S NOTE: playwright Claire Willett sneaked in one track at the very end, Tom Lehrer’s hilarious and irreverent “The Vatican Rag,” which really could not go on the playlist of ANY other character but Galileo.)
“Invention No. 8″: Songs For Galileo
Oboe Concerto in A Minor, RV 461:I. Allegro non molto - Antonio Vivaldi; American Classical Orchestra
Overture (Suite) No. 3 in D Major, BWV 1068: II. Air, “Air on a G String” - Johann Sebastian Bach; Capella Istropolitana

CHARACTER PLAYLISTS: Celeste Galilei
Playwright Claire Willett has curated a collection of Spotify playlists for each character from our upcoming play Dear Galileo - opening August 8th at CoHo Productions! Tickets on sale HERE. Follow us on Tumblr or Facebook for more inside scoop on the play!

(Kate Mura as Celeste Galilei, with Nathan Dunkin as Gabriel Vaughn)
“There was no more obvious pairing of song and character for any of these playlists than The Indigo Girls’ ‘Galileo’ for Celeste. I listened to this song like twenty times a day while I was writing. It was on repeat constantly. It contains so much of Celeste’s story . . . this whole idea of ‘How long ‘til my soul gets it right?’ which kind of echoes the way her character moves through time and shows up in every other character’s story. It was also important to me that the music on her playlist is all songs by women, about women, many of them telling stories about women learning how to claim their voices. A lot of the music on her playlist really emphasizes her position as a misfit, a social pariah, this big beautiful brilliant personality stuck in this small house in this small town with her grumpy dad and yearning for the life she could have had; which means that obviously the only right place to begin is ‘Eleanor Rigby.’“ --Claire Willett
“Wide Open Spaces”: Songs For Celeste
Eleanor Rigby - Dirt Poor Robins
Dancing On My Own - Robyn
Count the Saints - Foxes
Pretty Girls - Sarah Hart
Galileo - Indigo Girls
Anthem - The Once
As Cool As I Am - Dar Williams

Just One of the Guys - Jenny Lewis

CHARACTER PLAYLISTS: Gabriel Vaughn
Playwright Claire Willett has curated a collection of Spotify playlists for each character from our upcoming play Dear Galileo - opening August 8th at CoHo Productions! Tickets on sale HERE. Follow us on Tumblr or Facebook for more inside scoop on the play!

(Nathan Dunkin as Gabriel Vaughn, with Nena Salazar as Cassie Willows)
“When I was writing this play, I wrote all of Jasper’s science monologues first. So I started by researching principles of astrophysics that seemed to mirror the ways that human beings behave, and then I wrote what I thought Jasper would say about that thing to make it accessible. And then once I had all of those, I put them together in an order that felt like it had a clear story arc, and that’s what gave me the whole rest of the plot and who these people really were. And from the very beginning, the clearest straight line between those points was the one running from black holes to Gabriel Vaughn. That told me everything I needed to know about him. He’s so afraid that if anyone comes near him, they’ll get destroyed. There’s light and life and a real beating heart in there, but it’s trapped inside by this event horizon that won’t let anything in or out. So songs like ‘Supermassive Black Hole’ by Muse and ‘Counting Stars’ by Sugarcult really play directly into that. The soundtrack has a very dark, masculine sound - in terms of tone, Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen were musts. There’s also a lot of religious doubt and anger at God woven through his character, so that’s reflected here as well; Ike Ndolo’s ‘Crooked Soul’ and Shawn Colvin’s ‘Give God the Blues’ felt like natural fits.” --Claire Willett
“Supermassive Black Hole”: Songs For Gabriel
Supermassive Black Hole - Muse
Crooked Soul - Ike Ndolo
Personal Jesus - Depeche Mode
If It Be Your Will - Leonard Cohen
Nobody’s Got the Gun - Mark Knopfler

CHARACTER PLAYLIST: Cassie Willows
Playwright Claire Willett has curated a collection of Spotify playlists for each character from our upcoming play Dear Galileo - opening August 8th at CoHo Productions! Tickets on sale HERE. Follow us on Tumblr or Facebook for more inside scoop on the play!

(Nena Salazar as Cassie Willows, with Nathan Dunkin as Gabriel Vaughn)
“Cassie, more than any of the others, is to me the character most openly searching for human connection. Jasper talks in one of his science lectures about ‘red shift,’ the way objects in the universe as they move away from us. So many of the other relationships in the play are shifting red - people are drifting away from each other or moving into new orbits. Cassie isn’t. Cassie is the one moving towards. And she pulls everyone else towards her. The song that really represents Cassie to me is ‘Salt That’s In Our Blood’ by the Portland band Sean Flinn & the Local We. That idea that the salt in the oceans and the salt in our blood are connected in some way feels very true to this play. Everything is linked.” --Claire Willett
“Wild Heart“ - Songs For Cassie
Salt That’s In Our Blood - Sean Flinn & the Royal We
Cassiopeia - Jeanie Davis
Lovers In a Dangerous Time - Frazey Ford
Stardust - MIKA
The Bad In Each Other - Feist

CHARACTER PLAYLISTS: Jasper Willows
Playwright Claire Willett has curated a collection of Spotify playlists for each character from our upcoming play Dear Galileo - opening August 8th at CoHo Productions! Tickets on sale HERE. Follow us on Tumblr or Facebook for more inside scoop on the play!

(Gary Powell as Jasper Willows, with stage manager Nicole Gladwin)
“Jasper is a brilliant scientist, who thinks big and complicated thoughts about the universe, about space and time, about science and God, so this playlist is full of a lot of the science-y music I listened to while writing. Jonathan Coulton’s ‘Mandelbrot Set’ is a favorite - it’s about the mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot but it has so many fun Jasper parallels. And Jasper guides the play’s reflections about time and history and aging, our relationship to the past and future, so ‘All This Time’ and ‘Golden Years’ felt like songs he’d listen to. (I feel like Jasper Willows would definitely be into Sting.) He also has quite a comfortably high opinion of himself - Cassie mentions at one point that all his career, everyone has talked about him like he’s the next Galileo - so ‘Sensation’ by The Who (from Tommy) felt like a must. I sort of think about that song as the way Jasper sees himself.” --Claire Willett
“We Are All Made of Stars”: Songs For Jasper
We Are All Made of Stars - Moby
Me & the Moon - Gaelic Storm
I Am a Scientist - Guided By Voices
Mandelbrot Set - Jonathan Coulton
Right Here Right Now - Jesus Jones

CHARACTER PLAYLISTS: Robert Snow
Playwright Claire Willett has curated a collection of Spotify playlists for each character from our upcoming play Dear Galileo - opening August 8th at CoHo Productions! Tickets on sale HERE. Follow us on Tumblr or Facebook for more inside scoop on the play!

“My inspiration for Robert’s playlist was really looking for music that felt like secular hymns, that reflected the way he sees God in the world everywhere. So they’re not all necessarily religious songs but he finds spiritual meaning in them. ‘Daughter’ by Loudon Wainwright III and ‘Father and Daughter’ by Paul Simon were on constant rotation when I was working on Robert and Haley’s scenes. He’s also a fairly young widower, which felt like a really important thing to acknowledge as well; I spent a lot of time thinking about Robert’s grief in trying to get to know what kind of person - and father - he was.” --Claire Willett
“Roll Away Your Stone”: Songs For Robert
Roll Away Your Stone - Mumford & Sons
Ain’t No Sunshine - Bill Withers
By Way of Sorrow - Greg Adkins
From This Valley - The Civil Wars
Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door - Antony & The Johnsons

CHARACTER PLAYLISTS: Haley Snow
Playwright Claire Willett has curated a collection of Spotify playlists for each character from our upcoming play Dear Galileo - opening August 8th at CoHo Productions! Tickets on sale HERE. Follow us on Tumblr or Facebook for more inside scoop on the play!

(Agatha Olson as Haley Snow, with Walter Petryk as Robert Snow)
“Haley is a precocious kid who has fallen in love with science the way so many of us do when we’re that age - she’s obsessed with dinosaurs and the oceans and the stars and why things work the way they work. She also has this very loving, though complicated, relationship with her creationist dad, who doesn’t quite understand why she loves the things she loves. The music I listened to while writing Haley has a lot to do with joy and wonder - as well as a lot of fun songs about science.” --Claire Willett

The Big Bang Theory Theme - Barenaked Ladies
Cannibals - Mark Knopfler
Constellations - Jack Johnson
Galaxy Song - Monty Python’s Flying Circus

Over the Rainbow - Israel Kamakawiwo’ole
Pure Imagination - Douglas Hodge, from the London Stage Recording of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (tragically, the Gene Wilder original is not on Spotify)
Science Is Real - They Might Be Giants
The Princess Who Saved Herself - Jonathan Coulton

Ten Questions With Stage Manager Nicole Gladwin
Follow us on Tumblr or Facebook to catch all our “Ten Questions” interviews with the cast and production team of Claire Willett’s Dear Galileo - opening August 8th at CoHo Productions! Tickets on sale HERE.
NAME: Nicole Gladwin
TITLE: Stage Manager

Describe Dear Galileo in three words. Orbiting/intersecting perspectives.
What’s the design element for this show that you’re most excited for audiences to see? (No spoilers!) The floor. (Is that a spoiler?)
What’s the last play you saw that you really, really loved? Mr. Burns, a post electric play at Portland Playhouse
What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever had to do for a show you were working on? For Hunter Gatherers at Theatre Vertigo, we had prop lamb roast which was dropped onto the floor, eaten off of, and then the actors would rip the legs off and fight with them like swords. For every performance I had to re-assemble it, which involved putting the legs into the sockets, melting plastic sheeting with a heat gun to hold it all together, repainting the "skin" to look less like plastic, and loading up the rib sections with "meat" for the actors to gnaw on. (Close second place for weirdest thing: I had a set with a dirt floor, and had to come in Wednesday nights to water it.)
You have one whole day off with absolutely nothing on the calendar. What do you do with it? SLEEP IN. Then have a leisurely breakfast, drink coffee all day, and likely stay in doing stuff around the house. My whole-days off are so few and far between I tend to hibernate and recharge. If I'm leaving the house it's probably in search of food that someone else is cooking for me to eat.
What’s your postshow libation of choice? Usually a cocktail, usually involving bourbon.
Which Dear Galileo character would you most want to be friends with in real life? Haley. I was that kid in catechism too, always asking "too many" questions and being frustrated when I wouldn't get answers that made sense to me.
Name your current . . .
TV binge-watch obsession: It's 100% the cast's fault that I'm currently rewatching Star Trek: The Next Generation
Book on nightstand: Aziz Ansari's Modern Romance
Three most-played songs: 1) Lyrics Born: “Chest Wide Open” 2) Laura Mvula: “That's Alright” 3) First Aid Kit: “Heaven Knows.” All great, big, summer-y songs perfect for singing along with in the car.
Who’s a Portland artist you’ve always wanted to work with but haven’t yet? Grace Carter
Who should play you in the HBO biographical movie of your life? I have NO IDEA. I'm a behind the scenes gal, why is this movie being made in the first place?! Stop it! Imma trust the casting department on this one. Heh heh.
