i can understand why people don't like jaes romance since, at the start, it's pretty obnoxious and very public but i have always loved it, especially when you get the context of why jae acts the way she does, and why she almost parades you around like a showpiece,

because part of it is definitely that. jae likes to show off, she likes people to know that shes rich (comparatively), that she has sway, that she is prized, doted on, and granted exclusive privileges by someone that has a staggering amount of influence over the world.

because jae, at one point, had nothing. so she had to scrape, and suffer, and push through so many hardships, so much death and despair, so much of being kicked around by others, in order to become who she is today. and even that person isn't the real, or full picture of who jae is, despite how badly she wants to convince you that it is. she is an intentionally devious liar character that puts on different masks in order to get what she wants, but more importantly, survive.

and jae never, ever, lets anyone get close enough to see that, except the rogue trader, and even then, she never ever wanted them to see those "ugly" or "unlikable" parts of her. jae, due to previously being in an implied abusive relationship, will never open her heart again, especially to someone that wants to change her so dramatically, to erase the parts of her that helped her survive.

and so while a huge part of her romance is her showing off and being obnoxious about the relationship, so much of it is also her testing the waters, and knowing how far she can take this. how serious is this? is this a passing fling? or do you really like her? are you ashamed of her? would you want to change her? and if you continually keep going, no, jae, i love you for who you are, and no matter what, i will. she completely freaks out and tries to break up with you because she has never had such a genuine love, but she also desperately wants that. and in the end, she just loves you, with the title of rogue trader or not.

someone who loves her for her, flaws and all. someone who would never look at her like an abused little girl who needs to be changed, or "fixed" or turned into a pretty little thing, but instead perceive her as jae heydari, in all her forms.

and it hits that much harder when it all clicks because of course, that's why you broadcasted our sex lives to everyone. of course, that's why you demanded a gift. of course, that's why you paint poems on my ship and fuck around with my servo-skull. jae, someone who has shut her heart off, needs to know where you stand, and if you will also love the "bad", but necessary for her survival, parts of her. of course that's why you hid your past, of course that's why you refuse to let anyone see the real parts of you, because those parts almost died coughing up your own lungs or in the first ever sortie you had.

i just love her, and her romance, so much.
