Hey everyone! Hope you're all doing good! ^^ For this friday it's only a small post sadly, because I'm still working on the other projects I have planned. But I hope you'll like this one!

The idea for this came from my friend @moonflowerwrites, suggesting that it would be very funny if Mashita had cat ears and is very defensive about them, but calms down when Yashiki gives him ear scritches. I fully agreed, hence this was born. xD Thanks again for the cute idea and inspiration! <3

About the next projects: I'm currently working on two new short comics for two different alternate universe ideas. It's nothing big though, more like the comic-equivalent of a short oneshot fanfic I'd say (about 7 pages long each). But if you guys like them and I get more ideas, I might draw more for them. I'm very curious to see if/how you'll like them. :) Don't know if I'm gonna bother with drawing a title page this time (probably not), so I'm gonna give a heads up in advance: Next week's post (assuming I will finish it in time) will contain depictions of blood/injury. Nothing super dramatic (at least not worse than what we've seen in the games), but in case that's not for you, you should probably skip that.

Death Mark AU: Role Reversal with Demonic Possession

Based on the fanfic Windows of the Soul by KittenAnarchy, where Mary possesses Masamune instead of just giving him amnesia and Saya Kujou is our amnesiac heroine.

Thank you to NicoB for giving me something new to fixate over during the month of Hallows. Yes, I came across Spirit Hunter: Death Mark and now Kazuo Yashiki is my favorite wet cat man. Though with that love, I must now torture the middle-aged man. Oh jeez, I’m sounding like Mary now… 😬

Speaking of Mary, I think now is a perfect time to mention the fun AU idea I had based on a fanfic I found! For context in that fic, Saya had hidden away Mary’s legs so in retaliation she ripped Yashiki/Masamune’s eyes from his head and placed hers in, possessing him while Saya is the one who ends up with amnesia. There’s not much in that fic other than Saya meeting her possessed brother but I love the idea and wanted to give my own spin.

AU: I am planning on keeping Saya heavily damaging Mary in attempt to stop her. I felt it would add to the angst when Saya regains her memories and knows she accidentally caused her brother to become possessed and understands he was alone with that monster in his head for days. Cause, ya know, the Kujou siblings need regrets for their past actions.

The one thing I would changed is how Mary possesses Yashiki/Masamune. I’m someone who enjoys reading someone being trapped in their own body as someone else puppets them so I thought Mary would just pour all her essence into Yashiki/Masamune, The Conjuring style. That way, we can still have her fully in control with hints of big-brother Kujou trying to break though to warn his sister.

Also, I decided to do designing of my own Mary!Masamune outfit, since I feel like Mary would be like: “Oh? Of course you wear something like this for formalities!” And then the clothes would just be an alternative version of Mary’s. Well, an attempt at it. I really tried 🤣

Onto the events of Death Mark, Mary!Masamune would still take on the role as Mary did in the original canon as acting like an informant about the spirits but this time, he can walk so he acts like a servant to the Kujou household, saying only his first name and never giving Saya his family name.

But while Saya and her selected partners are out dealing with the spirits, I imagine the ones left behind would interact with Mary!Masamune — noting how he sometimes acts a little odd and not as cold and calculating when Saya is around (most of that is Yashiki fighting the possession or Mary giving him reigns but making sure he can’t call for help — typical Mary love). They would bring this up to Saya, who is starting to notice some strange things about the Kujou butler.

I should also mention that the memories Saya Kujou lost were of her brother, Mary, and her role as a spirit hunter. She knows she lives at the mansion, she has vague recollections about her father but any memory of Masamune, Mary, or the Mark are gone.

Anyway, that’s all I have for this AU at the moment. I just love me some possession and some angsty siblings so I wanted to contribute to the fandom. Also, enjoy a Mary!Masamiune without his hat and glasses!

199X. H City, Tokyo. In a local famous family's mansion, the "Kujou Mansion", there sleeps a cursed doll. I...

Pg. 2:

Must destroy her.

Pg. 3:

Yashiki (looking at sealed Mary): "Alright. No changes."

Pg. 4:

"It's been a while since I've seen your face, Mary." This doll-- Mary-- has thrown my fate into disarray.

Mary isn't just a normal doll. Not only can she speak and move--

She also curses humans to death. A mysterious entity that spreads disaster.

Pg. 5:

Since the Taisho era, each generation of the Kujou family has managed her. But 50 years ago, a disaster occurred. The head of the Kujou family at the time was "marked".

However, Mary revived. I... Robbed of Kujou Masamune's memories, was dragged into a "death mark incident".

Yashiki talking to Mary: "... You called me by another name."

Flashback Mary: "Lord Yashiki ..."

Pg. 6:

4 months earlier, after losing my memories I took a visit to this place, Kujou Mansion.

Flashback Mary of exposition: "'Marked' people will soon lose their lives."

At that time I had been inflicted with the "mark"-- a telltale mark of death carved into my skin.

[tl note: this works way better in Japanese because they call the death marks "seals", which is kind of like a stamp. But "death stamp" in English sounds kind of corny so you just have to repeat mark over and over again]

Using the name Yashiki Kazuo, I was told "If you exorcise these spirits, your mark will be erased"... I believed Mary's lies.

I confronted many horrifying spirits.

Their strength reflected that of the grudges they held even after death.

Pg. 7:

Mary pretended to save me... Pretended to lead me. All the while, she was grinning, delighting in the sight of figures trapped and suffering in the abyss of death.

The "fear" and "despair" of cornered living beings... She relished it.

Pg. 8:

That's what Mary is.

Pg. 9:

Yashiki: "That's not all. You also ... Killed Saya."

My only blood relative, my little sister Saya, also became a sacrifice of the mark.

Yashiki: "No, that's not right. I was just as responsible for her death..."

Pg. 10:

The sequence of events was that before I-- Kujou Masamune-- lost my memory, I had been taking Mary apart as part of a plan to reinforce her seal.

Masamune talking to Saya: "Our problem is the doll's revival time.

"Our great grandfather placed this nenjibutsu inside of it but... that alone isn't enough to suppress its powers.

"We won't be able to purify the nenjibutsu before it wakes..."

Pg. 11:

Saya: "Temporarily removing the nenjibutsu from the doll's body and purifying it before returning it to its original location ... Is that your plan, Nii-san?"

Masamune: "Yes."

Removing the nenjibutsu will force the doll to wake... In that time, sacrifices will be inevitable. But leaving it alone will only invite a worse disaster.

Saya: "... Got it. Let's do that then."

Masamune: "You really think we should? Saya?"

Saya: "Well...

A few days later, I lost Saya...

After the death mark incident, Mary was successfully sealed, but.... I wonder if that was the correct choice... Even now I can't answer that.

Pg. 13:

Kujou Masamune believed the sacrifices were justified, but Yashiki Kazuo...

Both of them are "me" but as a result of losing my memories, something in me changed.

Sigh.

Yashiki: "Just in case, I'll replace the lid of Mary's box."

There are no abnormalities regarding Mary's sleeping state, but sometimes I want to make sure I'm not overlooking any flaws while monitoring her.

I understand that my actions have only slightly delayed the ticking of the clock.

The seal I've placed on her will only last 10 years.

In time, Mary will inevitably wake up again.

Yashiki, leaning in close to observe Mary: "Hm? Her hair..."

Scary Hallucination Mary waking up and grabbing his face: "When the time is right, I'll once again... be able to see you..."

Mashita, grabbing Yashiki's arm and pulling him away from Mary: "What the hell are you doing...! You want to die or something!?"

Mashita: "Do you even know how dangerous doing shit like that is!?"

Yashiki: "M... my bad."

Mashita: "It's fine, now put the fucking doll away, fast."

Pg. 19:

Mashita, standing outside: "You done? Chop-chop, let's head back to the mansion.

"Tch. That storehouse smells so dusty, it's unbearable."

This man is ex-detective Mashita Satoru. We survived being on the brink of death together during the death mark incident. He's one of my friends.

There are 12 total mark bearers who survived having the marks carved into them by spirits. It's thanks to them that I was able to survive.

Pg. 20:

*Mashita begins walking back to the mansion, Yashiki lags behind*

Flashback Saya: "Don't you understand that ominous energy!? Get a grip, Nii-san!"

... Saya also used to scold me.

Since I've lost my memories, one more thing has changed. in my previous life, I only had Saya by my side. But now... *Wistful staring at Mashita*

*They've returned to the mansion*

Yashiki: "... Hey, why did you come by today? Mashita."

[* I talked about this before but he just uses bastard as a second person pronoun so he means "seems like a job suited for you" but he's literally saying "seems like a job suited for bastard". It's hard to put into English but he's probably not just randomly calling Yashiki a bastard that's just like. Because of the way Japanese works you kinda choose other people's pronouns more often than your own so this is His pronouns of choice. Bastard/bastards]

Yashiki: "Hold on with that talk... I already declined your invitation to do detective work..."

Mashita: "Listen.

"There's an increase in unexplainable phenomena happening in this city.

"For example, a school filled with mysterious disappearances... The origin of which are rumored to be 'death notices'.

"the academy people don't believe it, but there might be spirits involved. You could help them out."

Yashiki: "Give me a break... I don't have the same level of spiritual power my sister did. I have my hands full trying to find a way to exorcise Mary."

Mashita: "... You're really not interested? Then, how about this rumor?"

Mashita: "And in that Hyakkiyakou, there's always..."

Mashita: "A doll spirit at the center of it."

Mashita: "It's understood that frequent and inexplicable events are the work of those doll spirits. The possibility that a hyakkiyakou will be involved is high.

"If we trace the source of events to a doll spirit...

"By extension, couldn't you get closer to solving the mystery of Mary?"

*Mashita smirk, Yashiki worried face*

Mashita: "Looks like that finally stirred some interest in ya, huh."

Mashita: "Anyhow, it's not like I know anything about Mary's origin either. There's no documents left in Kujou Mansion from when she first appeared 60-70 years ago. All the leads are too old, I had no choice but to give up."

Yashiki, looking at his rotary phone: "Will you give me the details of the case request over the phone?"

Mashita: "Christ, just get a cellphone already.

"Alright, see ya. That's all I wanted to say.

"... Actually, I've got one last piece of advice.

"Stop fucking acting like that."

Yashiki: "Ah.. If it's about Mary, I understand."

Mashita: "Even if that thing's* sealed away, she can still sense your presence. She's obsessed with you."

[* he refers to her as 奴, which usually I'd translate as "that guy". Deeply northeastern/Midwestern American of him. "youse guys better not be fahcking arahnd" - Mashita at the hyakkiyakou I presume]

Yashiki: "Obsessed... Huh."

Mashita: "Tch."

Yashiki: "Because I touched her carelessly..."

Mashita: "Nope. You don't fucking understand anything. What you were doing back then..."

Pg. 27:

Mashita: "Those weren't the eyes of someone looking at someone they hate."

Mashita: "That's why darkness continues to surround you.

"Get it? What you should fucking do is exorcise that bitch*.

"Don't you agree?"

[*he uses アイツ for this one which would also often be translated to "that guy" or "that thing" but since I already used "that thing" and he's at the end of his rope yelling at Yashiki here he can be a little meaner I think. Would a pro translate this differently? Maybe! Do I like to be a little silly? Yeah]

Pg. 29:

Mashita: "She's a spirit.

"Dead people and living people are incompatible with each other! If you can't accept that...

"You'll get dragged in with them."

Mashita: *sigh* "Think it over. Even if you don't want it to happen, eventually that time will come."

Yashiki: *depression sfx*

Pg. 30:

Mashita's right. But what should I do...?

Investigating spirits and relieving them of their resentment...

I was able to solve the incident by empathizing with each spirit.

Just like that, if I empathize with Mary...

Would I be able to exorcise her...?

Flashback Saya: "I believe in you, Nii-san."

Yashiki: "Ah... I get it now..."

So it's gonna get updated twice a week (Tuesdays and Fridays) and the full manga will be complete in June 3rd and it will be available until June 30.

This is what's gonna keep me going until semester's over.

The manga artist for the death mark manga announced in Twitter that the manga will be free to read online for a limited time (in Japanese, not translated).

Right now the episodes por hanahiko are up and the ones for shimi-o will be released in April 29.
