Team Starlight

The main protagonists of my PMD fic! (coming out... at some point. Hopefully this year if I can lock in)

For years, strange holes have been opening up in the ground, swallowing Pokemon never to be seen again. Valerie, a young Popplio, thinks she's done for when she falls into one herself and lands in a Nihilego's nest, only to be rescued by a Asha and Skylar, two siblings who have been toughing it out in Ultra Space!

They claim to have come from Valerie's world, and the three make it back home together... but Asha and Skylar's family is still lost in Ultra Space. Desiring an adventure and wanting to help out her new friends, Valerie sneaks off to create Team Starlight with the siblings, becoming a trio!

Valerie:

A rising contest star who prefers to look on the bright side of life Having been raised by her brother, Marlow, in Serenade Falls, the an archipelago getaway, Valerie grew up surrounded by the easygoing fun of summer all year long, all around people who love and support one another. She puts on small contest appeals with Marlow, serving as his assistant while he does all the battling.

Valerie wants to make sure she gives back and believes that everyone, no matter how rude, deserves kindness. She goes out of her way to support her peers and help them feel better, and truly believes that everyone means well in the end. She goes as far as considering every Pokemon a friend, she just hasn't met some of them yet.

However, like most young Pokemon, Valerie still holds a sense of longing to see what's out there- she has never left her hometown once, and desires to take her career further, and see all the wonderful Pokemon out in the world!

There's just one problem. Valerie is "overcooked", which means that her aura- the energy inside of all Pokemon that allow them to use their attacks and evolve- is malformed due to being left in her egg for too long. So while she can use her attacks, doing so drains her rapidly and can make her extremely sick on bad days. She's significantly weaker than other Popplio, and is advised against evolution since too much energy could severely wound her.

Because of this, Marlow is extremely paranoid over her and refuses to go beyond the comfort of their town, where Pokemon know not to challenge Valerie to any kind of battle. So while Valerie is optimistic, deep down she truly is terrified of what's out beyond the forest, much less the mystery dungeons that spawn beyond town, and so she sits in the Serenade Falls she's all too familiar with, wishing she could steel her courage and convince her brother to let her go.

She gets her wish in a very confusing and startling way, however…

She's closer to Skylar at first, but she gets a pretty big crush on Asha.

Skylar:

Skylar is a rash but curious little Espurr who tends to bite off more than they can chew. They like to crack jokes and take charge, declaring themself the unofficial leader of their team with Asha and Valerie. They serve as a scout for new worlds, always eager to see what each place has to offer.

However, they get a little too comfortable too quickly, which can annoy the inhabitants of each world. They often get into trouble due to their cheeky nature, to the frustration of Asha. They're the one who encourages Asha and Valerie to see the world around them, but they often fail due to their own impatience and mischievous streak. Regardless, they adore Asha and Valerie, and was the first friend either of them grew to make in their situation due to their strong personality.

Skylar does not remember their past. All they remember is their first meeting with Asha when they were both young children, as well as having once been a human. A theory that their adoptive fathers, Castor and Atlas, agree with, although they tried to raise Skylar as a normal Pokemon child regardless.

While they can't remember details, however, they can remember certain emotions, largely that of loneliness and restriction. Thus, Skylar has a strong desire to have constant contact and attention, and grows very anxious when they don't have these things. They're very sensitive to criticism and tend to shut off when they get any. They also pride themself on independence, and don't really let themself be taken care of by others.

Skylar is quite powerful for an Espurr, having way more psychic energy stored than normal. They don't always have a decent grip on it…. it's not uncommon to hear sudden explosions around this team.

Asha:

A young, selectively mute, and cautious Gligar. Once Asha has a goal in mind, she is set onto completing it with no distraction, no trouble, no mischief. Which is hard, being a dimension traveler, as all 3 of those things seem to naturally drift to her.

Asha is adept at accessing her surroundings and the situation around her, opting to take the most efficient way through- usually the one that causes the least trouble, as they are very "in and out" about their traveling. They know what they want, and they'll do anything to get it.

However, because of their one-track mind, they're often exhausted both physically and mentally. It is also very hard for her to open up to others- since she doesn't stay in one place for long, they don't see the need to socialize. Also, it just plain makes them nervous- she is not the most social butterfly. She'll only talk comfortably with those she trusts- and those come far in between. She also actually happens to have a short fuse, but she tries to keep that- and all other emotions- under wraps...

... Because Asha is actually a living glitch. She's the child of Atlas and Castor, Pokemon who were born in different timelines, and thus were never intended to meet. Their aura is incredibly unstable, and when she freaks out, her body glitches and distorts itself and their surroundings.

There's no understanding about what her aura can and can't do. Asha is deeply ashamed of this, and believes that since the glitch is enhanced by strong emotions, she has to suppress her emotions and focus on her goals above all else. While she says she's traveling to find her family... she also wonders if it's better for her to stay away.

poketober day 24! prompt was water starter, i really enjoyed doing this lineless style ^_^
