no longer 1am, time to get cracking.
the process starts with scoring the card. this is just to ensure any layers of paint stick. like sanding, but more effective in this specific context.
then comes the paint. I like to use gesso, but I can't find mine so I'm sponging on white acrylic. it's a very slow go.

this is taking so long my phone is about to die.
hi my name is Jake. if you dont know me I like drawing and magic the gathering, and I'm currently out of a job. when you're poor and you play mtg, you do something called proxying cards. basically just printing out a card you want but can't use.
I decided that was boring. I started making my own, with my funny little fella named Steve on it. calling it the stevecret lair (crossover events are called secret lairs.) I've made two cards now, a Rhystic Study ($60+) and a hippo token ($1>) for my girlfriend. but the time has come where the people at my local game store (lgs) has started asking me to make cards. figured I'd document the process.

once that's done, I spray it down with at least three coats of spray laquer. that's another timesink- waiting for paint to dry.
when it actually does, the card needs to continue sitting in a well ventilated space for the acetone fumes to die off. otherwise they'll warp your card sleeves. it's a pain, but it's a labor of love. but I've run into an issue.
Someone is actually willing to pay me for this shit.
which is great! awesome! but how does someone charge for something like this? I can't charge by the hour because my hands don't work well. it took me 34 minutes just to make the Ms paint mockup. material cost is literal pennies. the card I'm proxying only goes for $8 USD. how do people adequately charge for their work?

so what goes into making a proxy?
more than you'd expect, honestly. first off: time. a lot of it. all of my work is done freehand, and you can't light trace through cardstock. I make a digital design mockup, then I use pencils to sketch that onto a gesso coated trash card, then I paint. acrylics, nail polish, and spray paints are what I work with. until specifically Christmas I only had one single round brush. I do my lining with pens, specifically a gel pen or a paint pen. it's messy, unoptimized work.

There is a group of people I play multiplayer mtg with, but as a competent deckbuilder who is not dating any of them I am cast into this role I have dubbed "The vizier". Meaning, I am, by this definition, the clear villain, but must advise players and alert them to the schemes my keen eyes spot across tables to survive.
"You must listen to me closely. I hold not threat to you. I am mearly trying to survive... I may be gaining counters, but he is one card away from completing his combo. You must fear the squirrels my lord, do not be deceived. They plot for your demise"
"Do not listen to his pleas of innocence. He carries with him the means for colorless mana. The stench of the eldrazi. You must end him before he becomes a threat not just for you, but the whole kingdom"
"think carefully with your target of banishment my lord. When have I harmed you? What is a single lifepoint between friends? But there across the board lies a much greater target! I ask you, what use would a man such as him have for double strike?

you lost yourself to the woke agenda. Stop being a trans man and go back to a cis man
I don't know what to add in response to this ask it's perfect on it's own. I don't want to soil it

I found a concept sketch of Zapp that I wanted to draw, with my own fanmade color palette (cuz I didn’t think his final colors looked good with it)
