I genuinely believe that the core difference between Dan and Herbert and the reason people like one but hate the other is the fact that Dan is good at masking.
Like OK mister got a great academic record, a perfect girlfriend, a nice house and even some killer looks in the second movie. I mean, it's fine if someone thinks it's actually something a person achieves by just living their normal life. But to me it seems like overcompensation of sorts. Like he feels he HAS to be this perfect version of himself to be accepted. Also may be why he can't give up even when the patient can't be saved. He can't mess up. Even if there's nothing he can do he must try until they take him out of the ward by force.
His only flaw is his passion and that is the main thing he has in common with Herbert. That is the reason he chooses to stay with Herbert over and over again.
Because Herbert got nothing but passion. He doesn't care for anything but his work. Hence why he doesn't have even the appearance of normality to be socially accepted. Surely he is intelligent enough not to piss off his superiors with his petty behavior. But he does so anyway. Because he doesn't care what they may think. Because it doesn't matter if he pretends to be 'normal'. All pretence shall be uncovered one day and the people will turn their backs on him once they see under the mask.
And you know who this scenario happened to? Daniel picture perfect Cain. The moment he took that risk to join something that fascinated him, the moment he agreed to something because it actually spoke to him, he was abandoned by the very people who promised him a bright great future.
And also because there was some old pervert with a spooky hypnosis power. But like. Neurodivergence was also there. Probably.

found family trope
I promise I’m not in the habit of reposting art. I’d just love to find this artist since I came across their work on Pinterest. It’s hard to find a photo with truly everyone in it.
One of my favorite details is that they’re gesturing toward us as the Tav, in a general sense, as we are handed a drink. (I think the only thing missing is Us - our little brain friend, haha.)
So, if anyone knows who the artist is - please let me know! I will then take this down and reblog from them directly and/or link credit. Thank you!
For now, enjoy the warm feeling that I got from looking at our disaster adventurers relaxing for once - they can be the heroes of Baldur’s Gate tomorrow.
The definition of the found family trope. 🖤

Something I love about confronting Cazador is how he obviously never processes that Astarion has friends until it's too late.
Petras and Dalyria must have mentioned that Astarion wasn't alone when they met him, but when you read Cazador's journal? He's 100% fixated on Astarion. How Astarion stood in the sun, how Astarion was willing and able to disobey him. And when Astarion shows up, Cazador barely acknowledges the party at all - and sure, that's partly because this is Astarion's moment in the narrative, but Cazador doesn't so much as ask why these random strangers are there! They're not part of his plans, so they don't exist.
And then they immediately save his errant spawn from the ritual and start beating his ass.
Just. What must have been going through Cazador's head when that fight starting turning against him? 'Is that... the Blade of Frontiers? Why is a monster hunter - and is that a cleric? - helping a vampire spawn? An undead? Ah, but they must be treating it as a necessary evil to have a chance to slay me, of course - hold on, why is the cleric healing Astarion? Why does that wizard keep Counterspelling everything I'm casting at Astarion, why waste the spells when I'm not even targeting him? Did... did that druid just cast Daylight on Astarion's weapons? And that brute of a tiefling - that's not just disgust in her eye when she looks at me, it's fury - and she keeps putting herself in front of Astarion, why in the hells would she - she's running right at me- '
I hope that one of the last things Cazador ever knew was the choking realisation that Astarion didn't just come back strong, or free. Astarion came back loved.

Herbert West wanted Daniel Cain to stay with him so bad he put up a creature who's only purpose was to love Dan. The creature who could do nothing else but love Dan. The creature who torn herself apart because Dan didn't love her back.
I fear gay people back in the day were just built different. Now it's all casual dating and therapy🙄🙄🙄
