I miss my mom. Her voice her face her smell her hair her laugh her eyes. Is it selfish to miss her love for me? No one else loves me or could love me as much as she did. I don’t want anyone else’s love anyway. I miss hearing her say my name so tenderly. I wish I could hug her now.

Today I’m thinking of Josefina.
While on a flight to Michigan a couple of weeks ago, I was seated next to a woman from Idaho. She was visiting her sister who was in the last couple weeks of an at-risk pregnancy.
I nodded to her and smiled as I sat down. She asked me if I spoke Spanish. I replied yes and we started talking. She showed me her beautiful family and grandchildren and told me she used to work in a campo in Idaho until she suffered irreparable back injuries from a car accident while working at the campo. At one point in our conversation, she asked me who I wanted to win the election. I told her Kamala Harris. She smiled and said she did too. She was sad to see that most of the people in charge of the campo and in her town wanted Trump to win. We work the land, why do you want us out?
It’s disheartening to see how much hate there is in this country and how complacent people are when they’re not directly impacted by the bigotry and racism Trump promotes and fosters.
I’m embarrassed that my people didn’t come through for Josefina, our community and other marginalized communities. How easily we forget that aggressive immigration policies will necessarily mean over-policing and mass incarceration of Latinos. I remember seeing the checkpoints planted in predominantly Latino communities. I remember my friends’ parents getting arrested at these checkpoints for not having papers and the very real fear of “la migra.” I remember my father getting his shoulders dislocated by police officers in Huntington Beach, CA just for existing while being Brown. This is the reality of what the Trump administration brings.
I mistook my community for one of unity. I will no longer be silent as it’s clear there needs to be more voices to remind us how not so great America was and is for Latinos. This is nothing to say of how bad it has been and will be for Black, queer, and other marginalized communities. It’s our duty to educate ourselves, grow, and come back better.
Ánimo.
