Paleolithic Stone Lamp, 'Ice Age Art Now' Exhibition, Cliffe Castle, Keighley, Yorkshire
The regular depression in the top of this quartzite block took time to make in hard stone. It held animal fat and a vegetable fibre wick which burned like a candle. Lamps and wooden fire torches were essential for working inside caves. Their flickering flames animated images into life.
