PGSM returns to TV in Japan!

Via Sailor Fun Comics and Retro Sofa over on BlueSky, it looks like Toei will be re-broadcasting the live-action Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon series in Japan!

This is huge news. Toei has a tendency to ignore the existence of PGSM, so the fact that the show is actually returning to TV is worth celebrating.

Could they be testing the waters, gauging interest in the show some 20 years later? Could international licensing finally be on the table, or at least an HD Blu-Ray release?

I’ve got my own, custom HD upscales I made of PGSM, but an official HD release would no doubt be superior.

Who know? Even if nothing else comes of this re-broadcast, a new generation will have the chance to experience the best version of Sailor Moon’s story.

does anyone else think routinely about how PGSM making princess serenity the villain of the story fundamentally changed the fabric of thinking about sailor moon as a whole. does anyone else lie awake thinking about how PGSM having minako dies changes her entire relationship to rei. does anyone else just stare into the distance thinking about how mamoru helping usagi in the last battle, after spending so much time trying to fight his feelings and honor his fiancee who saved his life just totally changes the fabric of their relationship. does anyone just think about the darkury arc and how ami's jealousy is so warranted and so interesting and that her love of usagi is such a huge driving force of the show. does anyone just think about PGSM 10+ years later.

20+ Episodes into Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon (2003) and I'm very much convinced it's the best live action adaptation ever made. I'm saying this as someone who's a big One Piece fan.

I don't really care if the plot is the same as long as the character and story are interesting. I kinda prefer my adaptations to bring something new to the table and PGSM certainly does that.

I always get a kick out of Miyuu Sawai's goofy smile in the opening credits. It's pure Usagi energy. She looks so cute and dumb.

The fact they completely changed the personality and background of my favorite and she's still my favorite character makes it really special. I've never experienced anything like this.
