Photo above: Athabascan beadworker Lilly Pitka of Fort Yukon, Alaska made these dog blankets in 1926. Dogs would be decorated with fancy blankets like this during special times of year, when families would come in from traplines in wilderness areas of the state to gather together in celebration.
ALL ABOUT THE DOGS – Dog sledding, or dog mushing, has a long tradition in Alaska. It was used by early residents as a means of transportation. Today, rural residents still rely on dog teams to hunt and travel in remote areas, as do hobbyists who enjoy exploring the backcountry with their highly-trained athletes.
Alaska also hosts a variety of big-name races. Thousands of fans follow along as mushers spend days competing in long distance wilderness events like the Iditarod and the Yukon Quest. There are also sprint mushing races that are run through the streets of the state’s largest cities.
In the earliest days of tourism in Alaska, visitors found depictions of men and their dogs to be extremely compelling. They sought to bring home reminders of these people and their trusted companions of the trail. Many of these items were created by Alaska Native artists as souvenirs.
Luke Saganna carved this hunter and dog team (below) sometime around 1984 in Barrow. It is carved from caribou antler and has sinew tow lines and harnesses.

The museum’s history & ethnology collection features thousands of items that depict the Native cultures of Alaska. Many of them feature dog-related carvings or depictions. Jotham Seppilu is a Yupik artist from Savoonga, St. Lawrence Island. He carved this piece from walrus ivory.

This year in Alaska, the famous Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race had to move its restart location from Willow, near Anchorage, to Fairbanks in the Interior due to a lack of snowfall. That’s more than 500 miles away from the ceremonial start location in the state’s largest city. And it means an extra day for mushers to scramble to get ready for the race. Fairbanks officials expect hundreds, if not thousands, of race-related visitors for the event.
Some of them might be in search of something to commemorate the experience, such as souvenirs or artwork like this piece of mineralized walrus ivory carved by Greg Stradiotto in 1984.

Even though this has been a relatively mild winter temperature-wise, many mushers and visitors will be sporting head gear like this marten fur “trapper-style” hat used extensively in Alaska. The flaps can be worn down or up, depending on the weather.

This depiction of a dog team and driver was commercially produced and marketed to tourists.

This is a wrap up post from everything in my Native American Heritage Month celebration by posting native fc resources (you’ll find all the resources by clicking on that link to that tag). Out of 58 different faceclaims…
Only 7 had any resources prior to the month.
Officially, it still remains that over half - and at this point it’s even nearly two thirds - of the face claims I’ve made resources for are at least part native, with it being 178 of those face claims (out of a total of 269), the percentage is 66.17%! This is up from the 51.94% it was at this time last year.
19 were cis males.
4 were two-spirit.
1 was genderqueer.
1 was non-binary.
2 were trans females.
32 were cis females (two of whom were pansexual, two of whom were bisexual, and one of whom had disabilities).
^^ Disclaimer: There was one fc who was trans female, two-spirit, and non-binary and those numbers include her in each she fit into.
The oldest was 60 years old, the youngest 16 … That makes the range 44 years!
The sum of all the ages was 959!
The mean of ages was 31.96 (with the 6 repeating).
With only two of each of these ages, there was a 5-way tie for mode with the years 22, 27, 29, 32, and 38.
The median was 29 years.
^^ Disclaimer: None of the five above take into account those of unknown age, and those who’s age was like 24 or 25 because we only knew they were born in 1992 and not a specific date, there was just a number picked in between as a .5 (so 24-25 I put in as 24.5). Therefore, statistics are skewed.
The mode tribe was Cherokee, with 8 faceclaims who were!
The ten other tribes that got more than one faceclaim included the Blackfoot (3), Choctaw (4), Cree (5), Inuit (3), Mescalero Apache (2), Metis (2), Navajo (4), Oglala Lakota Sioux (3), Ojibwe (4), and Quechua (3)!
However, there were 45 other tribes than just the above 11 (making the amount of tribes represented 56!), these only had 1 faceclaim and they were: Algonquin, Amskapi Pikuni Blackfoot, Arawak, Caddo, Chichimeca, Chipewyan, Crow, Cubeo, Dakota Sioux, Haida, Hudeshabina Nakoda Sioux, Huichol, Hunkpapa Lakota Sioux, Inupiat, Ishak, Kalinago, Kickapoo, Kiowa, Lumbee, Macuxi, Mattaponi, Metis of Plains Cree descent, Mohawk, Omaha, Osage, Ottawa, Pamunkey, Pikuni Blackfoot, Pipil, Plains Cree, Purepecha, Saulteaux, Seminole, Sisseton-Wahpehton Oyate Dakota Sioux, Squamish, Suquamish, Taino, Tuscarora, Tz’utujil, Wampanoag, Warao, Western Apache, Wichita, Yankton Dakota Sioux, and Yupik!
We’ve done stuff of all the beautiful rainbow of what natives look like … Multiple white-passing (skin tone wise) natives! A blonde native! A blue eyed native! Multiple natives who do look like what you expect! Multiple mixed race natives, with so much variety they’re mixed with! Black-mixed natives! Asian-mixed (from areas all over Asia: South, West, Southeast, East) natives! Latinx-mixed natives! Even a Polynesian-mixed native! Multiple full blood natives! Multiple full blood natives who were mixed tribe! Multiple natives who were just one tribe! Native Muslims who wear the hijab and who don’t wear the hijab! Jewish natives! Natives whose tribes’ headquarters are in Northern Canada to Natives whose tribes’ headquarters are in the Andes Mountains of Peru and so many countries in between!
And it’s all beautiful.
PS: This month also had resources of 9 who are non native, and they are so beautiful as well. This brings the amount of people who I posted of resources of in November to 67.
Thank you to everyone who reblogged, or did anything, or even just put up with me just posting those resources, throughout this entire month!
This will be tagged within the tag where I was putting these resources, so if going to this tag is how you’re seeing this post, welcome! And I hope you find a beautiful native fc for you to use that I did resources of during the November that I did this!
