Blanket Crochet
I finished my blanket. I left in the imperfections, some dropped stitches and ends not weaved in. These are evidence of my distractions, tiredness and anxiety. I thought it might go some way if I tried a method of analysis on the object as a piece of visual art using formal and contextual. I also used this for my critical practice.

From these and my prints I will create an installation ( digitally) with both displayed side by side. A representation of my exploration of collaboration, feminism and ‘art and craft’

Towards completion
I didn’t think I had enough time to create a painting that I was happy with and fully expressed the process for this brief. I decided to compose smaller prints from the painting as it stood. I was composing these trying to create snapshots of feelings of comfort juxtaposed with more angular forms and lines. I hoped to create an evocation of the confused and bewildering times we are in. I also wanted to demonstrate the sense of isolation from each other in our own bubbles of safety and security.

Crazy Quilts
Lorna gave me useful links to resources on quilters in America.

This gave me confidence to carry on with painting and using the original textile collage on photoshop. I could have and would have loved to create prints from works. I continued to run out of time and was anxious.

I continued with painting added layers, collage and depth.

I decided to create a painting responding physically to the textiles and narratives. Making a blanket composed of the colours, textures and forms derived from the images I had been sent.
I thought of Miriam Schapiro and her process of femmage and decided to incorporate print out of the photos and text. I anticipated a composition that would show an individual surrounded by blanket and pillows, folds of fabric and traces of the meanings these have for people.
It was a way for me to express how helpful it is in these times to be surrounded by comfort and security.
I was aware of the time and it was running out for deadline.

Digital Work
I would have really liked to take forward more digital work, if I had more knowledge and skills I think I would be more confident in the creative aspect of the work. At the moment I know what I want to achieve , totally clear in my head but can’t translate into the programme. Maybe I will over the summer sign up for an online course ?
Reflecting on the current situation where a lot of our focus for work and important relationship moves to online platforms it could provide an opportunity for collaborations that would have be created with the same ideas as my original face to face proposals.
My confidence and ability are low though..... wont be able to progress in enough time for this deadline but might need to be more prepared for next academic year and dissertation.

I then took a series of photos of my own blanket and experimenting with Photoshop masks and pattern tried to get a more realistic fabric effect. I quite like the results, however needs much more work on each image and on the making of the video. I feel very frustrated at my lack of technical skills in manipulating images digitally.

I experimented with masks in Photoshop. From stock photo tried to overlay using patterns I created. Looks static and totally unrealistic. I will try using my own photos.

Photoshop and Illustrator
I thought about the idea of blanket providing comfort and security and how I could create one. I didn’t have time to make a real blanket , I would have had to source yarn, material that replicated the images sent and decide on format, knit, weave, crochet or fabric.
I would have loved to do that but I was running out of time.
I had an idea to experiment with the images digitally, creating brushes with the textile images and textures. I thought I could then overlay or create digitally a realistic blanket.
I had to research Photoshop and watched youtube videos on how to create realistic fabric with pattern.
I experimented with creating brushes and patterns first and was able to create Paintings on Photoshop.

There were clear similarities in responses. How the  the textile images provide safety, security and comfort, strength and resilience. The types of textiles also signed these feelings, blankets, pillows, fabric from couch ect..
I really appreciated the response and in reflection I may have captured how people were feeling and were articulating in their choices a need for safety, security and comfort, strength and resilience.
I wanted to respect these textiles and feelings but I was unsure how to proceed in the timescale i had and that I could realistically complete.
