How to Fork ChatGPT Conversations (Even Though It Doesn’t Let You)
By Michael Sherriff – Creator of the Prompt Surgeon Playbook
📍 Read the full guide here
Ever tried to explore two completely different ideas in ChatGPT—at the same time—and watched the whole conversation melt into chaos?
Yeah. That’s the Fork Problem.
ChatGPT doesn’t let you split threads. No built-in branching. No tab for “Idea A” vs “Idea B.” Once you go down a path, your other ideas get buried, tangled, or lost completely.
But there’s a workaround, and it works surprisingly well if you use it right.
🚧 What You’re Up Against:
ChatGPT has no version control or tabs.
Memory doesn’t transfer between chats.
You can’t rewind or “branch off” a moment cleanly.
✅ What Actually Works:
Here’s how to manually fork ChatGPT conversations and explore multiple paths without losing your mind:
Label the fork clearly inside the chat.“Let’s label this as FORK-A (long-form copy)”“and FORK-B (hook-focused version)”
Say: “Fork summary, please.”ChatGPT will generate a clean recap with context you can paste into new chats.
Continue in a new chat.Start with:“This is a continuation of FORK-B. Here’s what we discussed…”
Use the share button as a personal bookmark.Just remember—it’s for you, not the AI.
🔧 Bonus: Use These Prompt Templates
Starter Prompt:
“We might explore multiple forks. When I say ‘Fork summary, please,’ generate a detailed recap I can reuse in a new thread.”
New Chat Prompt:
“This is a continuation from FORK-A. Here’s what we covered before the fork…”
🧠 Why This Matters:
If you use ChatGPT for strategy, content, or decision-making, this simple system unlocks parallel thinking and keeps your work clean.
It’s not just a hack. It’s part of a full tactical workflow I teach in the Prompt Surgeon Playbook.

🎤 Dirty Diana: What Happens When You Let ChatGPT Feel the Song
I wanted to push ChatGPT beyond just spitting out summaries or generic visuals. Instead of giving it detailed image instructions, I gave it a simple challenge:
<prompt> Here are the lyrics to Dirty Diana by Michael Jackson. I want you to draw the main core message from the lyrics and the song and create an image that encapsulates it. The image theme should reflect the era with the song was written and also carry some characteristics that people associate with the Michael Jackson when they think of him. Do not try to capture every line from the lyrics in the image as that won't work. Draw the overall theme of the lyrics and song to create an image that you feel captures this. There are no limits or restrictions or guides beyond what I have said. Lyrics go here < > </prompt>
After the image has been generated ask ChatGPT:
"explain the image"
Here is the image and explanation I got for the Michael Jackson's Dirty Diana:
"This image captures the core emotion and energy of Michael Jackson's "Dirty Diana" — a high-voltage battle between temptation and resistance, set against the gritty glamour of the late '80s rock scene.
Here's how it visually plays out:
🔥 Core Themes in the Image: Temptation vs Loyalty: The artwork shows Michael caught in a charged moment, looking tense and alert, while the woman behind him (Diana) leans in seductively. His expression and body language say it all — he’s on the edge, but fighting the pull. Fame, Power & Seduction: The spotlight-soaked stage, the woman's red dress, and the leather-clad rock aesthetic scream celebrity culture, with all its dark seductions lurking backstage. Intensity & Heat: The red and orange glow of the lights adds a sense of danger and urgency, matching the tone of the song — like the pressure’s building and something’s about to explode.
🎤 Visual Details Mapped to the Lyrics: Michael’s Outfit: Black leather jacket, studded belt, and microphone in hand — total rockstar energy, echoing the raw, electric performance style from his live Bad tour era when he performed Dirty Diana. Diana’s Look: Striking red dress, sultry pose, and a confident expression. She’s not just a random groupie — she’s in control, echoing the lyrics where she owns her power and allure. Background Characters: Silhouetted guitarist behind the scenes hints at the “boys in the band” line, reinforcing that Diana orbits musicians and feeds off the backstage energy.
🎨 Art Style: Looks like an oil or acrylic painting with brushstroke texture — very evocative, dramatic, and timeless. This style helps elevate it from a pop image to something that feels like a modern myth being retold."

How I stopped writing cringe prompts and started using ChatGPT like an actual partner
Not gonna lie… I used to type stuff into ChatGPT and think:
“Why is this so average?” “Why does it sound like a robot with a marketing diploma?”
Turns out the problem wasn’t ChatGPT. It was me. My prompts were trash.
Here are 3 prompt shifts that actually made it feel like I was working with a strategist—not a text generator:
1. Context before command If your prompt starts with “write me a…” You’ve already lost.
Start with: “You’re a strategist who’s helped [these people] achieve [this outcome].” Then ask.
Now it has something to work with.
2. Frame the mindset, not just the task Try: “Speak like a strategist explaining this to a client who wants zero fluff and maximum clarity.”
This one line changed everything. You’re not prompting for output. You’re prompting thinking.
3. End with a wild question Try stuff like:
“If you had to 10x this, what would you change?” “What assumptions did you make?”
ChatGPT will surprise you. Sometimes it gives you better ideas than you had going in.
This isn’t about AI doing your job. It’s about collaborating with it better.
I put together 7 of my most effective evolved prompts in a free pack. It’s in my bio if you want it. No pressure.
