Fic Masterpost | Art Masterpost Excerpt: He has seen the way Damen looks at him these days, the trepidation and fear his face betrays when Laurent does not take extra measures to ensure he looks different enough. Long has this emotion been growing in Damen, and he never even realized it was there until it was too late. Laurent knows what Damen sees because it is what he sees, too. The only difference is that he has longed to see it whereas Damen never has. But there is a good reason for that. While Laurent sees a loved one, Damen sees a spectre. The ghost of all his past wrong-doing seems to haunt him still.

Lamen Week | Day 3

Prompt: Hurt/Comfort Title: Kingmaker, Kingbreaker Series: Captive Prince Rating: G Summary: A child suddenly appears unattended. There is no mistaking the resemblance; this boy is Damen’s blood, Kastor’s son. It would be the right thing to do, to take him in and raise him, but Damen finds himself conflicted over the complicated emotions associated with his nephew. At least Laurent is pragmatic enough to make the decision for him. Note: Dedicated to Jani_Tomb for the inspiration and her offer to beta this entire week’s worth of works! You dropped your 👑, my queen. Enjoy day 3 @lamenweek!

Excerpt: “And how did you discover the child was there in the first place?” It is Laurent's turn to ask questions now, but this all seems too carefully planned. Already, he has suspicions of just what has happened. “We… heard it crying, my king,” Pallas says, still facing away from them. “And you came to tell us this because?” Their guard is silent. He seems hesitant to admit this is their nightwatch admitting they have failed to perform their duties securing the castle walls during the night. While it is true there have been fewer and fewer rebellions to quash in the past months since Vere and Akielos joined their kingdoms under two crowns, there will always be some sort of threat lurking in the background for all of their reign. To think otherwise would be foolish, and Laurent is no fool. “You haven’t the faintest idea what to do with it, do you?” he surmises, pulling away from his husband and reaching for the white shift he let Damianos relieve him of the night before. It slips easily over his head, and he does not bother to tie it shut before bending down to pick up the wrinkled chiton at the foot of their bed that he hands off to his husband casually. “Bring me the child,” Laurent tells their guard. His tone is level, bored even, but that is when Laurent is the most dangerous of all.

Lamen Week | Day 2

Prompt: Folklore & Mythology Title: Tooth and Nail Series: Captive Prince Rating: G Summary: Akielos is on the verge of war with Vere since King Theomedes’ bastard son has been caught conspiring with the Veretian king’s brother, Laurent I, to overthrow the Akielon monarchy. Their decades long peace is now in danger. But before his father can call for war, Prince Damianos has a plan. Note: Based on Aesop’s Fable The Lion in Love. Enjoy day 2 @lamenweek!

Excerpt: “Are you mad!? How do you intend to convince the Veretians this is not some ploy for Akielos to turn them against themselves? Would it not be easiest for them to blame Kastor, us, for the attempt on their king’s life?” He speaks vehemently, out of turn, to his prince. Thankfully, Damen has always been gracious when confiding in Nik and does not call him out for addressing a royal as such. “Do you remember the story The Lion in Love?” Now it is Nikandros’ turn to be confused. What do children’s fables have to do with anything? Of course he is familiar with the tale; all children in Akielos hear it from their mother or wet nurses before they can toddle. It is a story meant to caution those naïve enough to believe in the power of emotion. The lion is a symbol for their proud country, and Nik recalls that the outcome of the tale does not end well for the king of beasts. “Yes,” Nik finally answers. “I know it… but you are doing that which the story warns you not to! You are—” Damen holds one hand up to silence him. Instead of keeping a distance, Damen reaches forward and places it on Nik’s shoulder. The touch is warm and familiar, meant to soothe and not command. “I promise you, friend,” Damen says to him, “it will not go that way. Have faith.”

Lamen Week | Day 1

Prompt: Summer Palace Title: Love, Probably Series: Captive Prince Rating: G Summary: Laurent is going on vacation with his family because it’s his parent’s twentieth anniversary, and he hates everyone and everything until he meets a very attractive employee in the lobby of the Summer Palace, Ios' finest resort hotel. Laurent’s way of dealing with that is bullying the poor guy only to find out he’s the heir to the resort. Whoops. Note: Last year I did something canon for this prompt, so this year I'm doin' an AU! Yes, we’re back to cheesy lyric tags. Fight me. Enjoy day 1 @lamenweek and let’s see if I can get my act together and finish this challenge before the end of the month.

Excerpt: “Tell me, Damen,” Laurent asks, tightening his grip defensively on his duffle bag, “isn’t there something else you should be doing other than bothering a guest?” That seems to snap the employee out of his stupor and here comes that smile again. He definitely deserves an A for effort if he's going to continue to act unphased in the face of Laurent’s caustic remarks. “There’s always something else I should be doing,” Damen says easily, like he’s going along with whatever game he must think Laurent is playing. Truth is this whole interaction is actually making Laurent feel uncomfortable in more ways than he can explain; he’s not readily sociable like his mother or his brother, which is why he often tries to avoid situations like this if he can help it. Few people ever seek him out for the pleasure of his company, but this one seems particularly stubborn. “The real question,” Damen tacks on, “is what can’t I do in this hotel?” Laurent thinks it’s said as a way to show-off, like Damen’s some big shot when he’s really just a seasonal hire. That only encourages Laurent to smooth out his features to ensure he looks overwhelmingly unimpressed. “I didn’t ask,” Laurent deadpans...

Excerpt: “Gah-ah dammit!” Wade catches his curse at the last second. It’s probably not the wisest thing to take the Lord’s name in vain in his own house. That’s the third time he’s cut himself in as few hours and in the same spot no less. “Stupid letters, stupid community service, stupid disorderly conduct charge!” And stupid him, too, for agreeing to serve his sentence like a grown-ass adult! Prompt: Kings Title: King(s) of the Rodeo Series: Captive Prince Rating: PG Summary: Damen thought he’d challenged and beaten all of his best competition by now, but when a stunning foreign cowboy steps up and says he’s competing, it’s clear he’s finally found the rival of his dreams. Excerpt: “You, uh, lost or somethin’?” Damen tried again. He didn’t look a day over sixteen and likely was lost in the backstage area looking for his brother or father who must’ve entered into today’s competition. “I’m not lost,” the kid hissed. His voice sounded harsh coming from someone so fair. “I’m here to compete.” Damen’s eyes bugged out for a second. “Wha- you? Compete?” The incredulity of his voice carried louder than he’d thought, and one or two of the Akielon competitors still in the locker room looked over with mild interest. “You sure don’t look it,” Damen added, tossing a hand on his hip. “Were you here for the junior rodeo? ‘Cuz I hate to tell ya, that event ended this mornin’.” “I am not a child, you idiot. I’m a competitor.” “You?” Damen backed up and sized up the youth in front of him. “You’re gonna compete?” He didn’t mean for it to come out sounding so condescending, but really, this kid looked around a hundred pounds wet and way too soft to have anything worth offering to today’s type of sport. Maybe barrel racing but definitely not any of the harder events like the bareback which was starting now, where Damen was supposed to be headed. “You don’t think I can?” came the haughty reply. “Just watch.”

Lamen Week | Day 7

Prompt: Angst Title: Onus Fate and Undue Odium Series: Captive Prince Rating: PG Summary: There’s something about Sicyon’s highest councilman that Laurent dislikes, but the topic is a painful one that he would rather not discuss. Note: Title is borrowed from A Perfect Circle lyric from the song Feathers. It roughly translates to the burden of fate and the resulting disdain. Fic idea came from and is dedicated to my friend and moonlight beta, cheekystyles. I hope you got the hurt you wished for.

Excerpt: “My love,” he called out, causing Laurent to stop dead in his tracks. He turned his head in Damen’s direction, but didn’t react to the pet name, one that Damen knew he secretly adored. “You seem troubled.” Laurent’s eyes narrowed, the blue of them turning to ice. He moved his cold gaze over Damen’s body eliciting a shiver. “I hadn’t noticed,” he replied before turning and resuming his pacing. When Damen took a step closer in the hopes of offering comfort, Laurent flinched and whirled around to stare him down. Damen froze. “Don’t-” Laurent started, his breath beginning to turn shallow. “Not tonight,” he said, his voice softer now. There was a wild look there Damen had not seen in a long time. Fear. “Of course,” Damen acquiesced.
