December 12, 2001 Winona Ryder was arrested for attempting to steal thousands of dollars worth of clothing from Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills. According to courtroom testimony, the store’s security team witnessed Ryder remove security tags from various items with a scissor before placing them in her bag. As the actress exited the store she was apprehended by several guards.

“Didn’t my assistant pay for it?” Ryder said as the officers rifled through her bag, despite having entered the store by herself.

Later, as the store’s employees deliberated whether to refer the case to the police, Ryder supposedly stood up, took the hand of a member of the store’s security team, and apologized.

“I’m sorry for what I did,” she said. “My director directed me to shoplift for a role I was preparing.” 

The following year Ryder was found guilty of felony grand theft and vandalism and was sentenced to three years’ probation, 480 hours of community service, and $10,000 in fines.
