gonna be a hater for a minute, reblog and put in the tags the last movie that you HATED like viscerally hated like 1/2 star on letterboxd HATED
#hate is a strong word for this#because i have hated and seethed at movies in the past#but there's a certain industry-wide frustration and resignation i felt when i saw Wonka#it's just a sublime example of a movie that didn't give a shit about anything#it's that flavor of british film where the wit/whimsy feels like a saccharine flurry of empty spectacle w/ a manufactured heartbeat#no flavor no depth no salt nadda#and like Willy Wonka aint deep#but he's interesting#and since this movie directly called back to the Gene Wilder one i don't have any qualms comparing them#wonka is fun and dreams unabashedly#but there's also that thrum of sinister detachment that permeates thru everything he does and the way he does it#the juxtaposition of candy colored joy & ruthless capitalism which costs him nothing (either monetarily or morally) but pride#is what makes the story intriguing and worth thinking about after its done#instead of touching on any of that they gave him a tragic single mother backstory which motivated him to accomplish her unproblematic dream#like every movie of this genre does#like idk it feels like shallow grief that only renders when the camera looking at it#there is no deeper reach than the moment of him looking up and saying “this is for u ma.........”#cany help but feeling like there's a willy wonka backstory directed by fucking idk#baz luhrmann or quintin tarantino or shane black#that would hit the absurdness to a perfect level#maybe thats it#Wonka was created w/ the wrong genre#it was a whimsical family experience when it shoulda been a bombastic psychological thriller#that post saying they hired a bunny for the role of a hare is right on the money lmao#even tho i think good ol timothee coulda pulled it off in that context too#ANYWAY YA THAT'S IT#not the worst movie but def the best culmination of things i don't like!!!
