hi everyone ! a new year is upon us & i have high hopes for 2019 ( bc 2018 was a crapshoot lets be real ) & i wish you all a prosperous new year !

     There’s a scuffling on the inside, what sounds like a myriad of papers fluttering to the floor, a louder thump, a curse, and frantic papers crumpling beneath metal digits not yet accustomed to picking them up off of the floor. When the door finally slides open, the scattered stack in obvious disarray is teetering dangerously to one side of his desk and he is in sweats and a black tank top.

     “Keith! Yeah, come in. Its…what time is it?” Was everyone asleep? Should he have been in bed hours ago? There’s not an ounce of tiredness in his eyes as he steps aside, sorts out the leaning tower of documents, and motions towards the bed which looks like it hasn’t been touched since he made it this morning.

     “Something on your mind?”

It’s nearly comical, the sound of Shiro making a MESS on the other side of the door.  Keith can’t help but SMILE.  He’s still smiling when Shiro opens the door, still smiling when he steps into the room -- everything about Shiro makes it easier to smile.  

“ Almost 0300 hours. “ 3 am.  His smile is fond but admonishing, making himself comfortable in the bed that’s offered to him with a soft THWUMP as he plops down. 

“ Sort of -- guess I just don’t like being so far away from everyone ... the castle was huge and all, but we were all still so close to each other ... “  ( Sometimes I just need to make sure you’re still here, he doesn’t say. )  “ Guess I just miss you. -- missed you.  “

It’s late.  Really, really late -- way too late to be coming up and bothering Shiro -- he still knocks, though, even as he berates himself for needing to come to him.  He can hear Shiro moving on the other side of the door.  ( He’s not surprised that Shiro wasn’t sleeping -- it’s late, but they share that much in common ... little sleep. ) 

“ Hey, shiro -- I ... sorry -- can I come in ... ? “  ( How long has it been exactly, since he’s been able to come to Shiro -- his safe haven from the world -- ?  It feels like a lifetime away.  Maybe it is ... ) “ I can’t sleep. “

I still haven’t uhh watched the last season because I’m really nervous but ... I should do it soon.  i’m afraid it will kill the last vestiges of keiths muse given that it’s really just ... keith stresses me out emotionally now so ???

He’s grateful for the company despite figuring no one would be looking on garrison rooftops for anyone let alone him. It wasn’t his preferred spot, but he still refused to see if Black would let him in too afraid she wouldn’t and he would lose that part of his life for good.

“Thanks.” It’s a lame response, but his brain feels slow. Tongue heavy like it’s going to choke him. “I never actually thought we’d be back. Either time. Figured I’d die in the arena or-okay, yeah I did die in space, but I never figured I’d come back and we’d actually return to Earth.” Shiro can’t call it home because it’s not. Hasn’t been for a while. There had been no one waiting for him upon their arrival. A small part of him hadn’t wanted to see the blue green planet again. “I was hoping we’d catch a break, but you know guess not. We’re-you’re the paladins of voltron. No paid vacation.”

He doesn’t tell Shiro about spending the better part of an HOUR looking -- or that when he’d left for Kerberos, Keith had favored this roof.  The closest he could get to Shiro ... and then when he was gone ... well, Keith revolts against that memory.  Shiro isn’t GONE now.  There’s a patience for Shiro that Keith doesn’t really have for anyone else -- even given that PATIENCE has been a learned thing, in the past years he spent secluded on a whale outside the natural flow of time ... 

“ ... I wasn’t worried about coming back to earth. “  He admits, slowly.  “ I didn’t really care about it ... everyone I loved was already in space anyway. “

Shiro excludes himself from the group with a readiness that punches Keith square in the gut.  Keith can’t do anything but stare, for a second.  He’s so bad at words, and they get stuck in his throat on the way out.  “ You’re still a PALADIN, Shiro ... you’re still a part of this team ... “ There’s a grief in his voice, the kind of grief that comes with knowing what you say can’t heal this hurting -- there aren’t words he can give to magically fix what Shiro is feeling.

A reminder that when I redid the blog I updated Keith’s about - I’ve always sort of played him as genderfluid and Nonbinary but was too scared to like make it an official thing, it’s now an official thing on his info page.  It’s not likely to come up a lot, it’s just a small detail that I’ve always had for him.  He still uses male pronouns.  Feel free to ask me any questions you have.

deep breath in.    If Shiro wants to be alone, that’s fine, all he has to do is ask ... but Keith remembers being alone.  Sometimes, he remembers it with a startling clarity.  The last thing he wants is for Shiro to feel ALONE.  He drops down beside him, drapes one leg off the edge of the roof and pulls the other up to his chest. 

“ do you wanna talk about it? “  The it in question being the nameless pressure that’s been abounding -- there’s a lot, in review.  And Shiro hasn’t taken the time to address it ... thrown from one fight into the next since he’s come back ... ( And for Keith, coming home had been easy.  Home has hardly ever been a place.  Earth feels more alien than space, at this point.  Earth was just a big rock, a point in space where his home was now choosing to be -- for Shiro, what was Earth? )  “ Whatever it is, all of it.  Or none of it.  I can just sit here ... I don’t want you to be alone, Shiro.  You’re not alone, okay? “
