Everyone should read their own fanfics recreationally tbh this shit fucking rules. It's like the author knows exactly what I like.

Imagine how funny death note would be if Light WASNT kira. Imagine you are the real kira and you send L messages and you try to outsmart him but you also kinda want his attention. And all this dude does is focusing on this RANDOM 17 year old kid and his girlfriend. Like HELLO mr detective I am right here?! I just killed people in a specific pattern now try to find meeee...wait what are you doing? Why are you handcuffed to this student?!

Day 5: Chain/Free
Rating: G
tags: ghosts. Mentions of depression.
Light stared at the ceiling, his throat bobbing. It was a year to the day since L died. Misa was out visiting friends. He squeezed his eyes shut, just trying to sleep. Why was he having such a hard time? He was happy! He was free of L, free to be Kira and mold the world into what he wanted. As he moved his arm, he heard the familiar rattle of a chain.
Light froze.
He slowly opened his eyes, feeling something in his heart clench. The chain… was back on his wrist. His breathing went a bit heavy, staring at it in shock. It was just how he remembered, the weight of the cuff and the swaying links that trailed off of it.
Light slowly followed the chain with his eyes. It had to stop somewhere. It trailed off, disappearing into the darkness of the hallway. He swallowed thickly and slowly followed after it, the cold floor sending chills up his spine.
The chain went in a line through the hallway, resting on the floor and under the front door. Light stared at it for a second before taking a deep breath and leaving the apartment. He followed the chain up some stairs until he found himself stepping out on top of the building’s roof.
Light faltered, his brow furrowing when he saw a figure in the distance. The other end of the chain. L entire body seemed to be an ethereal, light blue, his jet black hair a dark blue like the ocean. Light opened and closed his mouth, feeling his throat close on him. He growled and tried tearing the cuff off his wrist.
“You’re not here. This isn’t real. I’m just tired.”
L slowly turned to look at him, his eyes vacant, yet somehow filled with so much more emotion than when he was alive. L stared at him silently. Accusatory. Sadly. Sympathetically.
Light’s breathing went heavy as he viciously pulled at the chain, his fingers aching from straining on the metal.
“Don’t look at me,” Light panted as he continued tearing at the links, desperate to pull them apart.
L just continued staring. At this point, Light’s hair had gone tousled, his eyes wild like an animal as he grasped at the chain. His voice came out a pleading shriek.
“I said don’t look at me! You’re not real! Go away!”
L took a few steps in Light’s direction. Light was vaguely aware of the fact that he was hyperventilating, his vision swimming. L got so close that he could almost smell the faint scent of coffee and vanilla. He used to love burying his face into L’s skin just to get that scent…
“You’re not real, you’re not real,” Light whispered.
And then L… reached out. Light stiffened as the gho- no… hallucination, it had to be… reached out and touched his palm flat against Light’s chest. It felt so real. Light’s breath hitched, something in his chest leaping at being able to touch L again. The hand was steadying, allowing his breathing to slow until he went quiet, the two of them staring at each other.
“Why are you still here?” Light breathed. “Just… just go away…”
L’s brow quirked. He gave a silent snort and held up his own wrist, which had the other cuff. Light swallowed thickly, the message clear. ‘We’re bound together. I’ll never truly leave you.’ The thought was as comforting as it was terrifying. Light shook his head almost desperately.
“But the game is over. It’s done. You’re dead… t-there’s no point in you being here…”
L leaned forward and gently pressed his lips against Light’s. Light’s eyes widened a fraction. The kiss was ice cold, L’s lips barely physical, more like a small wind touching his mouth. Light’s eyes flickered, slipping closed as he leaned into the kiss.
He reached up to frame L’s face, but his hand went through his head. Light winced, but tried not to think about it.
“Please…” his voice cracked, “please leave…”
The elation at having killed L had lasted for a few months, and then the depression set in. The longing. The desire. The pain. He couldn’t stop thinking about L. It was like his own soul had been shattered, leaving him a broken shell. L leaned forward, his lips close to Light’s ear. Light gasped softly at hearing L’s voice. It was light and breathy, carried by an invisible breeze that seemed to echo through Light’s head.
“I can’t. I’ve nestled into your chest.”
L leaned back and held up his wrist, dangling the chain between their faces. Light stared at the chain, feeling that same dread spread through his dread. His throat bobbed, watching it swing.
Light squeezed his eyes shut again, pulse thundering.
“No. You’re not here. I killed you. This is just… this is nothing. You’re nothing!“
When he opened his eyes again, he was alone on the roof. Huh, he was trembling… Light slowly looked down at his wrist and faltered, wincing when he saw a deep indentation in the skin, as if something had been tightly wrapped around it.
Light hugged his wrist close to his chest and blinked, remembering what the ghost had said. No, it-it wasn’t a ghost. Just a manifestation of the depression and boredom. He had to believe that. With a small shudder, Light turned on his heel and scrambled back down the stairs, the hairs on the back of his neck standing.
