FINALLY DONE!! I think something that often gets garbled when talking about how discussion of fromsoft games got like it did, even with acknowledging that about half of this was the fault of the "prepare to die" marketing, is how much of an original sin you can traced to how fextralife interacted with the other existing fan resources for the games. not so much that it's not discussed, but moreso that it's misdiscussed

anyway here comes my dozenth fextra hater rant

this has to be set aside from the more modern drama around fextra, because that's kind of putting the cart before the horse, and also placing the community toxicity a bit too far forward on the timeline

the site was a poisoned well from the start and even its modern behaviour, like rushing to SEO out status as the canonical wiki for new rpgs by making threadbare pages full of inaccurate info, can be traced back to how it would copy info from other fan wikis and skew the presentation towards minmaxing in games that (notably) have never really required that in an effort to make itself the canonical source

a lot of the core of fextralife's design was on making a resource for being as good as possible at the games, and as you can imagine, that creates a very specific kind of engagement with what are otherwise very exploration and experimentation reliant games
