Sarina Holstein - Week 15

Producer Stuff

For most of this week I was only able to do work on our deliverables and getting them all into the right folders. I have begun filling in our EPK, but there are still some empty areas as I have not heard back from certain crew about bios and headshots. I believe our credit list is up to date and organized better. Most of what we are missing is production pictures and our title page.

Fundraiser Pt. 2

We will be needing another fundraiser to pay our alumni for the shots that they did for us. They helped us out a bunch, so we want to make sure that they get what we agreed upon. I made another sheet in our Budget spreadsheets to come up with the estimated amount we'll be needing for this second campaign. It is significantly lower than our first, so hopefully it is much more doable in a shorter amount of time. We will hold this campaign after wrap so that Jewel and I have more time to finish the film before figuring out the specifics of another campaign.

Everything else

It's been a really slow week on my end as I just realized that I cannot do final lines and color for shots that I didn't do the roughs for, so I've been struggling to get a start on those. It's gonna be a lot of hard work and sleepless nights to get this film finished before the 12th. I just really hope that my laptop's tech issues are resolved soon so that I can do more than just my own shots.

Sarina Holstein - Week 14

Animation

Finally, I have finished my final rough animation shot and can move onto doing final lines and color! Again, I am not able to share the video here because my laptop is still having issues with QuickTime. Thankfully, Jewel has been kind enough to export all my shots for me on her end. All our rough animations are done and have been compiled which we will be able to show next week!

Backgrounds

Progress is moving slowly for the backgrounds, so there isn't that much to share here either. There are about 12 backgrounds left, but I am sure that we will get there!

As of right now, we are currently missing 2 rough animation shots but those are almost complete and should be done before this Friday.

New Crew Assignments

We have for the most part fully shifted over to line and color. Almost all the backgrounds have been assigned and should be done by next week, I really do think we can get at least the coloring done by the due date.

Jewel Racasa - Week 13 (Part 2/2)

Here is part 2 because Tumblr is poopoo and won't let me put more than 1 video in a single post.

Music

Our wonderfully talented composer recently sent me some samples of the composition he's been working on. He said he'll try to get the rough draft in by Friday. He also asked if we could get him the completed rough animation before April 25th so that he can include it in his upcoming recital. So hopefully, we can get it to him by next week since we're aiming for the rough animation to be completed by next Monday, April 18th. Overall, the music sounds really cool and fun and awesome! It's a mix of modern instruments and traditional Philippine instruments. It shares a similar sound quality with my first film, Araw at Gabi, (which he also composed) since they share a brass gong that really drives the action.

New Crew Assignments

As of this week, all rough animations have been assigned which means moving some people on to final line and color. As of right now, according to our spreadsheet, 52 out of 66 shots are completed with rough animation. As for backgrounds, 40 out of 66 have been completed. Overall, we're really close to completing backgrounds and rough animation. I'm really hoping we can at least line and color completed by the due date.

Sarina Holstein - Week 13

Animation

Lots of extensions for this week as well, but we're slowly catching up.

Was not able to make as much progress as I was hoping to due to a health struggle. Fortunately, we are only 15 roughs away from being fully animated! Really hoping that we'll be able to get all the roughs by the end of next week, so that we can start focusing on final lines and color. I won't be able to share the shots that I did because my QuickTime has been running into issues again and I can't export or download videos.

Here are some of the backgrounds that the crew did this past week. We've reached 40 completed backgrounds rather quickly, so I'm confident we'll be able to have them all done around the same time as roughs.

Jewel Racasa - Week 12

New Friends!

Recently, we brought on some new crew members! We were able to obtain some help from our lovely alumni friends! New on our animation team, we have Gavin, Sophia, and Molly and on our background team, we have Nicole! They got to work right away because they were bored and wanted to LOL.

New Crew Assignments

A lot of our crew are behind on their assignments so had to give them extensions. A handful of people, including me and Sarina, have been having technical difficulties and/or have been getting sick so it's been really tough.

What I Did This Week

Since there's not a significant amount enough new animation to show from everyone to warrant a new edit of the animatic, I'll just share some things I did this week.

Rough Animation: Sq1s8 (no audio because I can only post 1 video per post)

Here's also a bunch of color palettes I worked on for the backgrounds. (I realized I forgot to put the colors for the sky. Sad.)

Production Timeline

At this time I think we're about 1-2 weeks behind. Originally, all rough animation was supposed to be done by April 4th but as of right now we are around 54% done with rough animation. Hopefully, we can get the rest done soon... :\ Realistically, I don't think we'll have it the film done in time for the sound designer and or composer. This is really irritating... Not sure how long it'll take us to complete final line and color. Probably won't be able to do compositing and lighting for the film's due date. Sad. :'(

In other news, I did a quick drawing of Palabok as a baby lol.

Sarina Holstein - Week 12

Animation

These past few weeks have been very slow for a lot of us, and the amount of rough animations that we've been getting from crew is decreasing. Here are the two shots of my favorite boys that I was able to get done:

Backgrounds

Since we moved all animators back onto solely animation work, there are only 3 people on backgrounds. They have been very good about getting their assignments in on time. Here are a few of the backgrounds that were turned in for last week.

New Crew

We have gotten quite desperate for rough animations, so Jewel asked a few alumni animators if they'd be available to do a few shots for us. So far, we've recruited 3 alumni. We insisted that they'd be paid for their work, but none of them have gotten back to us about their rates. Gavin has already done a whole shot for us.

Opening Thoughts

Overall, I think the film is going well and it's turning out to look really fun! My worry is that we're really pressed for time in order to get it to our sound designer in time so that he has enough time to do his work. A month for rough animation really is too little of a time for an animated film when you have to work with a crew that has other school priorities. Only about 27 out of 66 shots were rough animated in the past 3-4 weeks. Sarina and I are trying our best to take on more shots ourselves but we do have to make some sacrifices in order to find the time to do so. It's already kind of been difficult to find time and I've started to fall behind on some other class assignments. Luckily, my teachers have been understanding.

New Crew Assignments (Pt.2)

This is a follow-up to Sarina's week 11 post. This is an updated version of the image in her post. I assigned myself my shots and backgrounds. Mina has let us know that she wouldn't be able to complete her assignments on time this week so I decided to take over the shots she was originally assigned so that she's not playing catch up next week. I replaced 2 of the shots I originally gave myself with Mina's assigned shots.

What I Did This Week

Here's one of my shot assignments from this week I just completed. This is Sq3s14 where she crashes into the hill and flops out.

Here's a background assignment I completed as well. This is Sq3s30, where she notices the burlap sack under the pile of puto. I tried my best to match the style and design of the other backgrounds that were already made.

Here is the layout I did for the Pagkain Village. In order to save time, we decided to use this as our opening shot (Sq1s1) instead of the original composition we had in the animatic.

I also started working on color palettes for the buildings but it's been taking me a while to finish them all because I am very sleep deprived and I've been having body pain recently. (Please ignore the inconsistencies in terms of design and layout in my color palettes). I will hopefully finish the rest before we have to make next week's assignments.

Sarina Holstein - Week 11

New Crew Assignments

Below are the BG and Animation assignments for the crew this week. We are resuming assignments for animation now that we have the final audio to lip sync with. Due to some delays, we've decided to give extensions to those who have been falling behind on their shots.

Animation

This is one of my shot assignments that I was able to finish before class this week. It's got some lip syncing with our lovely voice actor, Abby's, dialogue for Turon! Thankfully QuickTime started working for me, so I am able to share the video version here.

Backgrounds

Below are some of the backgrounds that we got done this past week! These were done by Anh, Angela, Cheska, me and Hinata! There are a lot more that we got done, but cannot share due to the picture limit.

Additional Crew

Recently, we took on another crew member to help us out with background art as we only had 3 people solely doing backgrounds. I had her fill out all the necessary forms and uploaded them to the drive.

Jewel Racasa - Week 10 (Spring Break + Back To School)

I did do a week 9 spring break post but I wasn't sure if we needed to post over break lol. This is a continuation of my week 9 post.

New Crew Assignments

Originally, we were supposed to start assigning shots with dialogue but I had issues with my Storyboard Pro where it wasn't detecting my subscription. The issue has been resolved and I can finally access Storyboard Pro as of today (Wednesday, 3/23). Since I couldn't assign any new animation shots, I gave my crew the opportunity to catch up on any late assignments and I assigned backgrounds as well since we are behind on those as well.

According to our production spreadsheet as of right now, 20 out of 66 shots are completed in terms of rough animation.

Environments & Backgrounds

I worked on a color and style palette for the Chocolate Hills so that people could work on their background assignments.

We're almost done finalizing the 3D models and layout for the Pagkain Village as well. Our 3D artist Tyler has been working really hard on it for a long time now lol. (I've apparently hit the limit of images allowed on a post so I will provide a drive link for this instead).

Art for Fun

Over the break, I drew Palabok for fun. I drew her in my normal art style (my animation art style and my normal art style are different lol). It was fun since I've gotten a lot better at drawing people and understanding bodies since I've been taking the life drawing class this semester. It was a fun piece to draw since Palabok is such a dynamic and expressive character! It also gave me a chance to figure out how Palabok's character and color palette would look against the Chocolate Hills.

Sarina Holstein - Week 10

Animation

I have not done much else but animating this week. There were some minor adjustments made for a previous shot that I did in order to match the final audio, but since I am having technical difficulties with QuickTime, I am unable to share it. Instead, here are the other two shots that I completed for this week.

Minor Things

Jewel was experiencing some issues with her Storyboard Pro, so I helped her out with BG layout exports so that we could begin assigning BG work. I also paid our composer today since I just got his payment info today. Still waiting for receipts to send out more of the software reimbursement.

Sarina Holstein - Week 9 (Spring Break)

Animation

Dialogue Recording

The biggest learning experience that I had over this break was recording in a professional studio for the first time. It was quite overwhelming, but our sound tech was super nice and patient with us. He helped us out a lot and let us stay until we were finished recording despite having gone a bit past our reservation time.

Budget/Distribution

We are still waiting on quite a few people to upload their receipts before I can send them the right amount of money, but I have reimbursed those who already uploaded their receipts. And since we had our crew lunch over the break, I made sure to pay Jewel back asap and logged all expenses in our spreadsheet.

Forms

I took some time to look over the forms that were submitted by the crew to make sure everything looked good. After I downloaded the forms and renamed the files for better readability, I uploaded them to our class folder.

Jewel Racasa - Week 9 (Spring Break)

Hello! Not sure if we were supposed to do a blog post for this week since it's spring break and I realized pretty late that today is Thursday lol.

New Crew Assignments

Animation

As of right now, we have about 10 shots rough animated. Some people are late on their assignments or need to make some revisions but I think that's okay for now and I hope the break allows them the time to catch up. I can't show everything on the post since Tumblr only allows 1 video per post so I'll post whatever was submitted to the discord as gifs. (Sarina will have the shots she worked on in her post).

Dialogue Recordings

We just got home from recording for Palabok and Puto at Thunder Studios Hawaii. It was really cool to see how professionals to record voiceovers. The sound engineer who works there helped us a lot and was really nice. He said we did good and gave us advice that when we do sound recordings in studios to next time to send them the video and dialogue with timestamps, as well as character lists ahead of time so that everything is ready to go so we can just go straight into recording when we come in. Luckily, I did prepare and bring my hard drive with the animatic with the timing as well as a printed dialogue list with time stamps. I did make a mistake where I did a general dialogue list instead of a more detailed one where every line had timestamps. In the one I made, I only timestamped where the beginning of a conversation starts. It was a good learning experience. Our voice actress for Turon had also sent us her audio files from our recording sessions with her as well.

Cast & Crew Lunch

Earlier this afternoon, we had a lunch picnic situation with everyone on the island who could come! I gave a little speech on the importance of food and the concept of coming together for a meal being an important part of Philippine culture. It was also a great opportunity to get to know everyone a lot more since we've mostly only communicated online. (I kept forgetting about taking a picture so we took a picture towards the end of the gathering. The cast and a couple of the crew had left earlier prior to the picture. Alex took the pictures lol). I'm glad everyone had a fun time and that they really enjoyed the food! Everyone was really nice and cool!

Note: We took our masks off to eat and for the picture. To remain safe we did have our masks on and did make sure to check with everyone with their comfortability when it came to us being in closer proximity with each other when we had our masks off.

Jewel Racasa - Week 8

Hello and welcome to: Jewel tries to remember what she did this week. Listen, it's been a long week and I'm tired but I'm trying my best lol.

Crew Assignments

This past Monday, I worked with Sarina to start assigning our crew their assignments so that we could officially start production. Sarina assigned people to shots, and I worked on the assignment instructions and uploaded each shot from the animatic separately into their corresponding folders. We haven't started backgrounds yet but I started planning their assignments for next week.

I did the math (I'm bad at math by the way) and with a total of 66 shots and 8 animators, each animator would have to do about 8 shots (8.25 to be exact) in total in terms of rough animation. Our goal is to have rough animation done within 4 weeks or by the end of March. This would mean that each animator would have to complete at least 2 shots per week in order to stay on schedule. Luckily, this lines up with the workload that the animators said they could realistically do. So, for this week, everyone was assigned 2 shots (except Sarina who has 3).

We decided that Mondays would be when assignments would be due as well as when we give out new assignments for the week.

Rough Animation

I was assigned Sq2s1 and Sq3s1. I started working on Sq2s1 since it's going to take me a couple days because of its complexity and runtime. This is where they're in front of the apparel store and right before Palabok sees the cloak. It's been turning out really fun looking! I need to work on animating Palabok next. I'm really glad to see how much my animation skills have improved.

This is a work in progress of Sq3s2, done by Rachel. This is at the Chocolate Hills as the ground starts to rumble before we see the Puto Monster. Here Palabok is reacting to the rumbling. I really love how Rachel animated her reaction. The pose is strong and clear even though she's so small in this shot.

Environments

Rachel had finished her rough passes of the Pagkain Village. She had designed and colored both sides of the street this story takes place in. We had to design the other side of the street since there are shots where we can see it either behind Palabok or we're in the apparel store looking out the window.

I also had Hinata working on designing the Chocolate Hills. I had sent them references of the real Chocolate Hills in the Philippines and had instructed them to basically replace the hills with literal chocolate chips and they did a great job! I didn't instruct them about the time of day that it takes place so I'm glad they knew the story and made it in the afternoon!

Closing Thoughts

Despite the unfortunate events of last week, I feel a lot more confident this week in terms of schedule. If I did the math right then I believe we can finish on time. We understand that there will be times when people can't finish their assignments but Sarina and I are ready to take over when that happens. It just feels good to finally be moving onto production and actually animating. It feels like it's been forever since I last animated something (in reality it's only been a little over a month).

Sarina Holstein - Week 8

Final Dialogue Recording

Despite the stress we were experiencing at the time, because of scrambling to figure out the recording situation, we were able to find a date that worked for all of us and a studio we could book with. So far, we have already done recording with our voice for Turon on Tuesday. All other recording will be done on Thursday next week! Hopefully we will be able to have the final audio added to the animatic before we return from Spring Break.

Rough Animation

In order to keep on track, we have assigned 2 shots to everyone for this week! We decided to have Monday be the day that shots are due and when new shots will be assigned. Since our audio isn't finalized, we are not going to assign parts with dialogue yet.

The shots that I worked on so far are Sq1S5 and Sq3S16. Do excuse the unfinished look, I know Turon is bald, but these are just roughs for now.

Budget/Expenses

I made some adjustments to the budget to reflect how much we would need for subtitles and closed captions. There are still a few missing components that I will need to add or subtract from, depending on our needs. I've also been keeping track of our expenses so far in a different sheet. Still waiting for a few people to respond to the Reimbursement form that I sent out, and will wait for everyone to submit it before I send out the money.

Forms

So far we have the forms from everyone who has already begun to work on stuff for us. There are a few people who won't be able to do work until after Spring Break, so we will be a little lenient with their form due date.
