Though Chester Alan Arthur Arthur’s political enemies would later spread rumors that he had been born in Ireland or Canada, he was born in Vermont. He went to school, supported the Whigs, studied law, and went into partnership to practice law in New York. One of his partners was the grandson of John Jay, the first Chief Justice of the United States. Arthur played a role in a landmark case that freed slaves arriving in New York. Another case involved a free woman who was denied a seat on a streetcar because she was black. Arthur won the case, and the verdict led to desegregation of the...

I don't really like writing about things that are controversial, but I feel strongly about a few things so I will make an exception. I always thought of myself as a Republican. I don't really like voting for a party, so I am more interested in the candidates than the party, but yet the Republican party seemed more aligned with my core values and beliefs than the Democratic party. However on some issues I agree with neither party and with some issues I am more aligned with the Democratic party. This election cycle has been unique and has caused me to more deeply get involved and to rethink m...

In celebration of the upcoming US Independence Day holiday, I am writing a series of blogs about what business lessons, we can learn from our past US Presidents. I will start with the Father of our country, George Washington. A president of the United States is much like an entrepreneur. The United States is in many ways a gigantic company and many of the lessons Washington learned on the road to the presidency and afterward can be applied to business. 1. Look to Your Role Models When building a business, it can be helpful to look to those who came before as an example. Forging your own pat...

John Adams’s ancestors were Puritans, members of a religious group that fled England to have a chance to practice their own faith. They believed in being a “city on a hill,” or an example to people around them. Adams studied law under the famed lawyer John Putnam and went back to Harvard to get a graduate degree in law. Here are some business lessons we can learn from our second President: 1. Don’t Be Swayed by Popularity Sometimes Adams stuck to his beliefs even when he faced fierce opposition from members of his own political party. During the period where it look...

Thomas Jefferson once said, “I cannot live without books.” His was a life full of learning and knowledge, which he later put to use as one of the founding fathers of the United States. His education was made possible in part by the high social status into which he was born. His father was a plantation owner and his mother belonged to one of the most prominent families in Virginia. His connection to people of wealth and power allowed his access to the finest tutors and at the age of nine Jefferson began studying Latin, Greek, and French. He would later learn Gaelic, a language sp...

Our fourth President was not quite as famous as his 3 predecessors, but we can still learn some valuable business lessons from him: 1. Don’t Let Your Disadvantages Get to You Madison didn’t have the strong physical presence that George Washington had. He was short and thin, and his health was poor to boot. He even described himself as having speech impairment in his early years. But he didn’t let his disadvantages prevent him from achieving his goals. Those who visited him in his old age described his thin, wrinkled face, but they also noted his blue eyes and the intellig...

James Monroe was our fifth President and he did many things that businesses today can learn from as follows: 1. Show Courage In battle and in political office Monroe showed great courage. He was wounded in battle while forcing the enemy retreat and was present at some of the important military events of the Revolutionary War. This courage served him later in office. Business may lack flying bullets or exploding cannonballs, but it is nevertheless a suitable place for you to show what you’re made of. 2. Don’t Stretch Yourself Too Thin Monroe believed both men and countries had to...

Our sixth President had to overcome various difficulties to achieve success and we can learn from these. 1. Let Others’ Strengths Complement Your Weaknesses John Quincy Adams was never much of a people person. His social skills left much to be desired. This could have been a great hindrance to his career, but his wife Louisa was warm and personable, which complemented her husband’s weaknesses. Together they made a fine team. No one is great in every area; it’s likely that you have many weaknesses of your own. One way to prevent those weaknesses from destroying your busine...
