AI Won't Take Your Job, But Someone Using AI Might Take Your Client

I have been thinking a lot about this whole AI conversation lately. Everyone is talking about AI taking jobs, and honestly, I get why people are scared. The headlines about AI replacing workers are everywhere, and it's natural to feel unsettled when we see automation advancing across industries, from manufacturing to delivery services.

But here's the thing: I think we are looking at this all wrong.

Last week, I put this theory into practice using ChatGPT (GPT-4o) and Claude Sonnet 4 to help design a church poster. I needed to design a poster for our church's Communion service. Usually, I would sketch some ideas, maybe look at Pinterest for inspiration, then get to work. But everyone is talking about AI these days, so I thought... why not give it a shot? 🤷‍♂️

After multiple prompts and iterations, the AI-generated designs didn't meet my ultimate standards. Not terrible, but not something I would hand to a client.

The designs looked like they came from a template factory, technically correct but missing that human touch you can't quite put your finger on.

But here's what caught me off guard.

When I finally ditched the AI outputs and started designing from scratch, something had shifted. I knew exactly what I wanted to create. The whole back-and-forth had organised my thoughts in a way I didn't expect. It was like having a brainstorming partner who never gets tired and can throw ideas at you all day long.

The AI didn't design it for me, but it helped me design it better.

This entire experience made me think differently about the "AI is coming for our jobs" panic. Maybe we are asking the wrong question about AI. Instead of "Will AI take my job?" it should perhaps be "How can I get better at working with AI so I stay ahead of the curve?"

Here's what I realised: it's not about AI vs humans; it's about humans with AI vs humans without AI.

AI won't replace creative professionals, but professionals who know how to collaborate with AI will have a serious edge over those who don't. You still need judgement, taste, and the final creative spark, but you get there quicker and with more options to consider.

I am not saying AI is going to solve everything or that everyone should rush to use it. But this brief experiment taught me that sometimes the value isn't in what AI creates; it's in how it challenges you to think.

The future belongs to professionals who see AI as their creative partner, not their replacement.
