Okay, so, I've seen a lot of people complaining about how Suzanne Collins wrote The Covey, specifically that they seem to be based on outdated stereotypes of the Romani people, and I would just like to contribute my own thoughts to the conversation, specifically that they are not based on Romani, but rather Bluegrass artists. Let me explain; Bluegrass, as a genre, has an incredibly rich history, being working songs, mining songs, protest songs, ways to spread news, old European ballads carried over and changed to fit The New World, and a million other things, but one of the most important parts of Bluegrass is its connection to Appalachia, especially Kentucky. This would make more sense as something off of which to base your Appalachian characters in your Appalachian setting than a primarily Eurasian ethnic group. There is also a long history of Bluegrass singers traveling, especially in old, beat up trucks, just like the one Lucy Gray says they travelled in. There is so much history of them traveling, in fact, that there is an entire room dedicated to the trucks in which they travelled in the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame and Museum. I think this makes a lot more sense, especially because Bluegrass has it's earliest origins in the ballads after which Covey members are named. For a while I was confused about why nobody mentioned this, but then I remembered that most people didn't watch a three hour long documentary on Bluegrass seven times in four days, so this is pretty niche knowledge.

tumblr is widely known for its sexymen polls so why not make one for asoiaf? the problem is that if I played this straight jaime would sweep the floor with the other contestants and it would be no fun (I know my audience and also come on) so I decided to do something a bit different
so I present to you the first Unlikely ASOIAF Sexyman Poll consisting of characters that george probably never intended to be fuckable but some of you freaks and fujos want to fuck anyway...
I've seen thirst posts for all of the characters in this poll except for one (which was a suggestion from my brother that I thought was kinda funny) but now it's up to YOU 🫵 to decide which one is the most fuckable!
"but lady shart I don't like men" well neither do I but for the purposes of this poll let's all pretend we are bisexual fujo riverlands peasants and decide in our heart of hearts which of these unsexy sexy men is the most fuckable!
let the voting begin!!!!
"but shart where is the hound?" nowhere because I hate him and I feel like he would win because of the show it's MY poll and the first democratically elected president of the 7 kingdoms daenerys targaryen said I can do what I want 😉

hate hate HATE when people act like cersei wanting to keep myrcella in kings landing is a symptom of her narcissism or "loving her children as an extension of herself" like yeah youre right a girl who was married off against her will to a political enemy as a peace token and maritally raped for 15 years wanting to spare her daughter the same fate is psychotic and self centered my bad

the cistern being dry at the end is a heartbreaking detail because not only is haymitch going to feel guilty about it for the rest of his life, but it’s also evidence that his ma, who has always been able to move forward in tragedy, couldn’t do it this time. she lost a husband and two babies and kept going, but haymitch is taken to the games, and a month later, the cistern’s still dry.

“oh no autistic wiress has been disproved in sotr because she could communicate normally until she was tortured! :(“ WRONG. literally the first thing haymitch thinks when he sees her is wow she’s weird. it’s said that she “shuts down” after giving them tips for the games and doesn’t give a proper goodbye. and she “can’t” elaborate about how she won her games. she was always semi-verbal/experienced verbal shutdown!! it was just significantly worsened by trauma!!

I mean this in the nicest way possible but everything I have ever learned about GOT and GRRMs writing has sounded awful to me. What makes it so compelling to everyone?
So it is deeply flawed in many ways. But it is huge and complicated and has something for everyone also. However dubious the prose can be from time to time the character writing is really tight. The POVs all feel like distinct, sympathetic, and complicated people. Everyone ends up being an unreliable narrator who is lying to themselves about something to cope in different ways for a really large and varying cast. I still think “what if the POV was King Arthur’s mother and not Arthur” is like one of the most progressive and interesting questions the series asks and he came up with that in the 90s.
The series also has pretty great thematic complexity and depth in my opinion. GRRM has a lot to say about feudalism, violence, trauma, gender, war, politics, etc. Most of the commentary is about deconstructing the impact those patriarchial institutions have on both their enforcers and the people they oppress. It is not consistently perfect or woke by today‘s standards, (especially in terms of orientalism) but it is pretty consistently interesting.

There is something real to me about Melisandre looking to Stannis as The Warrior to save the world and wield the flaming sword to guard the light but functionally it’s her the whole time. The fires are hers, the sword and power are hers, she views it as her responsibility to prevent this, and she is willing to make any sacrifice necessary to stop the long night. She is trying to guard the little children in the broad global sense and sometimes even when it’s hypocritical in specific instances like Daven and “Arya.”
Davos is often cast as The Father because he is the older man who provided for Stannis when times were the darkest, because he is constantly thinking of his own children, and because he gets told to pick right from wrong. But Davos keeps rejecting the paradigm of right and wrong, and refuses to go home to his children there and cannot protect the ones with him. Stannis is The Father, portrayed in the series in the context of judging right from wrong, stern before he is ever loving. His greatest strength and greatest weakness is his rigid moral compass and refusal to ever compromise it. As the only non-pov of the three. Stannis is also literally unknowable in the way that fathers so often are in Westeros.
Stannis looks to Melisandre as The Crone, who holds her golden lamp up to guide the way. But Melisandre is kind of defined by her struggle to correctly interpret her visions and her advice is often what Stannis wants to hear. This is because The Crone is Davos. As a smuggler, it’s his job to literally find the way out of an impossible situation, on and out of Storm’s End, or to Skagos to guide Rickon home. But metaphorically he is also the one to point the way. His reappearance after Blackwater is the light in the darkness for Stannis, and it’s Davos who guides them to the Wall to the real threat. He is the one true advisor on Dragonstone.

Rhaena the Lesbian remains a top tier asoiaf glup shitto though. “What if there was a Targaryen who was a lesbian with like sixteen girlfriends who everything bad in the whole world ever happened to her like dead husband, evil husband who killed the dead one, switched her twins which kind of killed one, wife left her, other husband serial killed her girlfriends, every other lesbian hates her guts, younger brother sucks, it’s so over” is such a wacky premise for an otherwise not that bold or dynamic book.
