“The suit of Memories was intended to show connections between sexuality, romantic attraction, and gender. For some of us, the nuances make all the difference in how we see ourselves and our relationships. This suit is also intended to start dialogue about the journeys we go on to figure out ourselves; we don’t exist in isolation, nor should we.” - Kes

“The suit of Dreams was intended to show a vast range of ways individuals experience romance. We know that romance, much like sex, isn’t necessary for a relationship to be serious, though many of us still desire it. Queerness is constantly subverting societal expectations and showing us that love is a whole spectrum of emotions and experiences. People we have no desire to sleep with can still mean the world to us.” - Kes

“The suit of Expression was intended to show a vast range of identities having to do with gender. We know that gender is much more complex than man or woman, because every individual person is much more complicated. I’m pretty sure the many political debates my beanie babies got into while I was growing up says more about my gender than the fact that the first shaving razor I used was pink. ” - Kes

“The suit of Insight was intended to show a vast range of identities having to do with sexual attraction. We want to acknowledge that it is a spectrum, and how we view ourselves is just as much if not more important to who we are attracted or not attracted to.” - Kes

“I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge a deliberate choice to begin 3 of the 4 suits with what could be seen as counter-defining identities; a suit about sexual attraction starting with a lack of it, a suit about gender identity with an ace that doesn’t have one, and a suit to discuss romance beginning with no interest at all. However, consider each suit a spectrum, not a linear one from start to finish, but a gradient from less to more, simple to complex, self informed to worldly. And I am not trying to give any one card any more importance than the next or rank the progression of any kind of identity. That is neither my role or journey to take; I am simply giving some perspective and allowing the nuance to settle. Or if you’d rather, I am giving you context for a series of color palettes that I have curated for you the view next to each other. It sure is a nice quilt of humanity, isn’t it?” -Kes

“I always tell people that being safe is more important than coming out. That said, being seen by the world is both terrifying and freeing. And also, it means that you find out how you were never as alone as it seemed.” -Kes

“The moon has quite the journey around our earth, even to eclipse the sun and pull our tides. But not knowing and having questions is a sign of growth. Who ever said the road would be a straight one?” -Kes

“This one was hard for me to place but in the end I settled here. The Hanged Man is one of those cards that makes you pause in a reading, usually because, while you already know how you got here, you are too revved up to do anything but tangle yourself more. You cannot reprogram yourself overnight, as much as you may want to. Please breathe.” - Kes

“This was another hard one for me. I knew how I always thought of temperance being a balance. I knew that it felt like a card to go after “a death” and hope that the scales equalized. Or maybe it’s better described as preparing for a new journey. What is wise for us to keep?” - Kes

“It always struck me as odd that Rider-Waite gendered this card. Maybe the idea was that being a priestESS removes one from material distractions? Well, whether that is true or not, defining oneself outside of being defined has never felt gendered to me. A guide seeks to let you make your own decisions and go with your internal intuition; what else could be more freeing or honest.” - Kes
