this concept interests me in how in impacts perception of the characters too, and aligns you with the main cast cause the two characters who do get fleshed out, aranea and meenah, are absolutely based on more modern archtypes hussie WOULD HAVE interacted with, but the ones that 'don't matter' def are just mean spirited jabs

and it just aligns your views of these characters who you've only ever heard of via second hand account with the beta trolls, they are literally meeting their idols and being punished for it, dare I say the fault in our stars style? and this ranges from karkats complete catatonic stupor to terezi thinking that these characters are "so much cooler" then her group (you know, because of the self loathing)

it's just interesting how that turned out to be a true thing that is real about the comic, and may be one of those happy accidents that aligns the themes of the comic with a presentation that was originally not meant to be theme adjacent

thinking about how the beta trolls are early 2000s internet archetypes as filtered through the lens of someone who was on the internet in the early-mid 90s and so they feel much more complex than they are simply through the way they talk and act, there's this intergenerational thing going on with them because these represent a mix of the Type Of People hussie would have encountered both in her early internet experiences and in her current (as of writing homestuck) ones

and how the dancestors then feel so much more shallower, because hussie was not actively participating in the spaces they were making fun of in the same way as with the beta trolls. there is a distinct Boomer feel to them despite hussie definitionally being a xillenial, because he was on the outside looking in which will always end up much more mean spirited. spiteful. and, most importantly, out of touch.

idk i just got to that part of the comic in my reread and it really hit me how stark the difference in writing between the two casts of trolls is just from being parodies of who the author personally considered her peers vs who she very much didn't
