My formative feminist text was "Marked Women, Unmarked Men" by Deborah Tannen. I read it when I was 14 for my English class and suddenly I had a framework to describe what I'd always known to be true: Gender is a defensive invention. I'd like to recommend it as reading to anyone curious about female-centered feminism... Frustratingly, the New York Times hosts the article and requires a subscription. If any gyns have a copy on hand or are willing to copy it below, I would be so appreciative.

I just come back to this video all the time but it’s Truly the most chilling thing I’ve watched in recent times. To hear him describe how after spending hours watching porn everyday he first viewed every single woman he came across as the porn category that could be applied to her. I do think the idea of porn addiction is making people believe that this behavior isn’t extremely normalized among men, and accepted by heterosexual culture. Many of the men I have talked to admit to loving porn freely and publicly. If you take a look at their instagram feeds it’s full of OF models. Even those in relationships admit to constantly looking at porn. They don’t need to watch it for hours a day for it to have some amount of presence in their lives. Again, they feel fully entitled to women’s bodies, and their sex. Every woman is someone they could potentially fuck, and her worthiness is in direct correlation to how fuckable she is. I think men have adopted this mentality for hundreds of years. But porn is literally every single place you look these days, and im deeply aware of how it’s degrading women’s self perceptions, as well as men’s perception of women.

Research into work-family conflict finds that single men and women living alone can find long work hours challenging. They have no one else with whom to share household responsibilities, and report that work demands leave them without enough time to maintain friendships or establish romantic relationships. It's nice to see it aknowledged that even for singles work demands can seriously clash with other responsibilities. Usually the emphasis is on parents and mothers, which is understandable. After all, having to take care of children on top of doing your paid work is even more responsibility and can cause even greater conflicts. But that doesn't mean that everything is always super easy for single people and that they just have an endless supply of free time.

Children as young as seven are subjected to sexual taunts on the playground.

Womontown: A Radical Lesbian Neighborhood in the 90s

A story about an intentional urban lesbian community in Kansas City, Missouri told by the women who founded it and lived there. Organized in 1990, and transforming 14 city blocks in the Longfellow neighborhood into a revolutionary community by and for women.

It's only about 30 minutes long and very cool so I recommend taking the time to watch it🌷 There's lots of cool stories and pictures from the women who lived there. Also, you can have a crisis thinking about how they paid $250 a month for a two bedroom apartment.

However, it is a PBS video so I don't think it'll be viewable outside of the US, unfortunately.

However, Farley was surprised to find just how much men in the study knew about coercion. She said they had described it similar to how “pimps control women,” in that they select the most vulnerable women. Most men knew that most strip clubs are commonly used for child sex trafficking.

That article where a law professor argues that battered women are morally entitled to kill their abusers has an interesting quote: “ Men can kill women with their bare hands, and they do. Women almost never kill men that way. They can’t. […] While very few women kill abusive men who are asleep or passed out, it’s “unfair” to charge them with first degree murder, Sheehy argues. “It’s not fair to characterize it as the most heinous form of murder, because it may be their own route to survival. ” There have probably been feminist analyses of this already, but it’s worth discussing how the concept of self-defence, especially in domestic violence cases, was designed by men to benefit men. In my country at least, your attack is only considered “legitimate self-defence” if it is a) necessary, b) immediate, c) proportionate. A concept of self-defence that only applies if you hurt or kill someone while they are attacking you, and if you hurt or kill them using the same weapons as them (your bare hands, if that’s what they are using) only benefits people who are likely to be attacked by people of similar size and physical strength, and is utterly useless to women.

When a bigger, stronger male beats up his much smaller wife, it’s almost impossible for her to kill him in self-defence (immediately and proportionately ie with nothing but her fists), and yet it’s the scenario through which she can hope to be acquitted or get a light sentence. That’s not a coincidence. The other two scenarios (and she will be despised if she picks either) are for her to  1) kill him later (when he can’t use his physical advantage, eg when he’s asleep or has his back turned on her), but it won’t be self-defence because it won’t be immediate. (In the Jacqueline Sauvage case, one of the main arguments against her was that she shot her husband in the back at a time when he wasn’t actively beating her up) 2) use a weapon, but it won’t be self-defence because it won’t be proportionate. Obviously this condition also benefits men, because when a woman gets punched by her husband and she punches him back, it’s seen as a proportionate response but it shouldn’t be, because her punch (typically) won’t do nearly as much damage as his. Anything else she does (like use a weapon) to try and hurt him as much as he hurt her will be considered a disproportionate response and will mean it wasn’t self-defence.

The idea that killing your abuser in a honest face-to-face fight with your bare hands is honourable and forgivable, but killing your abuser in any other way is shameful and wrong, utterly benefits men and protects men. It’s also why poison was historically reviled as a ‘female weapon’ and as the most cowardly way to kill someone. Poison has been described as “a great equalizer” - no wonder men hated it. Men have always hated, and will keep hating, shaming, and outlawing, any form of attack through which women can compensate our disadvantage in strength and size, and they will keep praising as the only valid method of self-defence, the method that presents the smallest risk of being effectively used by women against them.
