Avant-Noir, Volume 2: Program notes

The first edition of Avant-Noir was developed in 2014 for the ICA Artists’ Film Biennial. The program was intended to highlight the amazing yet underrepresented contemporary film and video work by African and African Diaspora artists. Another intention was for the program to be a formative proposal for a counter-canon of sorts. That was a conceptual mistake. Canons should not be formed, they should be broken. It seemed more beneficial to conceive of Avant-Noir as an intervention into the status quo of alternative film and video curating. As an intervention it quickly became apparent that it deserved a longer lifespan, to seed the terrain that had been cleared out for it. This engendered the program Avant-Noir, Volume 2, another collection of dynamic short film and video work that introduces the viewer to another group of outstanding artists who share in common an interest in representing black culture in its various complex forms.

Alternative Film/Video Belgrade: List of Important Works, 2013

The jury members for this year’s Alternative Film/Video Belgrade were Vassily Bourikas (Curator, Greece) and Andrés Denegri (Filmmaker, Argentina). They have decided to nominate seven competition films for the festival’s list of important works. The chosen directors receive a residency at Academic Film Center Belgrade and production support for a new film or video. The list is as follows:

Petite histoire des plateaux abandonnès 

HD VIDEO, 2012, 8.20 MINUTES

Abandoned movie sets are scattered around south moroccan deserts. In this work they are used again but the actors are two local kids, born not far from the film studios, now almost abandoned, near Ouarzazate.. The two kids re-enact a few lines from movies that have been shot there, an American horror movie, Lawrence of Arabia and all around the uncontaminated landscapes of the Draa Valley stand outside of time.
