Oikawa looks back at him, then looks at the open cave ceiling, where the crescent moon’s light is barely enough to illuminate the pool below. He looks around, trying to take it in from a foreigner’s eyes. It is pretty, isn’t it? “I was gonna come with Hanamaki and Matsukawa,” Iwaizumi says, already stripping his shirt off and kicking away his sneakers. Oikawa snorts. “But they, uh, didn’t want to come.”

Iwaizumi who calls Oikawa hime-kawa (princess-kawa) during childhood to make fun of him for being different than other boys. Tooru doesn’t want to play in the mud puddles on rainy days. He doesn’t want to mutate a centipede like Iwa’s other friends. Toorus rough around the edges, but hes not as apathetic to eating gross stuff or getting himself dirty.

“Hime-kawa,” Iwaizumi goads, trying to get Oikawa to stop watching movies and come dig up worms. Tooru says no. He doesn’t want to get dirty and catch a flu from the rain.

“Stupid hime-kawa!” Iwaizumi huffs, stomping his feet when Oikawa makes him carry their bags home. So what? His shoulders hurt.

It continues into junior high, then into senior high.

“Tch, hime-kawa,” Iwaizumi huffs when Oikawa’s wearing that stupid cherry lip balm and Iwaizumi’s lips taste artificially sweet for the rest of the day.

“Shut up, hime-kawa,” Iwaizumi hisses, one hand over Oikawa’s mouth. The storage closet is cramped. He’d swore Kindaichi went home.

My take on Garroths self loathing is that he confides in Laurance that he feels like he looks very plain / doesn’t understand why people find him as attractive as they do and Laurance absolutely refuses to tolerate it. Not like “omg nooo babe you’re so sexy haha”. Like “Garroth shut the fuck up”. He’s not putting up with THE ruaun beauty standard feeling inadequate.

bottom shoyo propaganda in 2020 was really the worst its ever been because hinata shoyo has hooked up with two people in his lifetime and it was kageyama tobio and fucking oikawa tooru. and you wanna sit there and tell me HE BOTTOMS? fuck out my face

the only time shoyo isn't buffer than kageyama is for that brief moment of time where they meet in middle school. beyond that, shoyo's very good at putting on muscle mass genetically, and he's shorter than kageyama, so it happens faster for him. it's really irritating for kageyama for a while until he realizes he's not jealous, he just wants to take a bite out of his spiker.

oikawa tooru surprises iwaizumi hajime twice in his life. there's not a lot that tooru can do that's surprising to hajime, because he's known him for so long that hajime can practically read his mind. sometimes its irritating.

the first time oikawa surprises iwaizumi is when they're thirteen. iwaizumi's always been taller than oikawa, used to resting his head on oikawa's when they fall asleep in the backseat of his mom's car on their way home from matches, used to pushing his hand against oikawa's forehead to make him stumble.

oikawa visits his grandparents for three weeks every summer. it's routine. obviously, iwaizumi gets the texts from tooru, saying how wonderful the countryside is and how irritating his dad's being, as well as the few 'iwa i think im taller now' and 'mom says ive grown', to which he always texts back, 'sure shortikawa'.

hajime does not expect tooru to come back taller than him. about a centimeter taller. he finds that he, very much, does not like this. when oikawa rests his head on hajime's for the first time on their drive back from a match? it's not iwaizumis fault if he shoves him to the opposite side of the car and huffs 'we're too old for that' and takes to looking out of the car window for the ride back while tooru whines.

the second time oikawa surprises iwaizumi is when they're 21, and they haven't seen each other in seven months. oikawa's been busy in argentina and iwaizumi's drowning in quarter work, time for both of them that's spent pulling out their hair and sending sporadic texts that read 'cant sorry later love u' and 'maybe? not sure bye okay <3'.

when it finally rolls around that oikawa can fly over to irvine, hajime greets him at the airport. he tries not to drown in excitement, but oikawa launches himself at hajime regardless, causing him to stumble back. hugs and short kisses later, iwaizumi pulls back and notices oikawa's... really wide. during his time in argentina, he's been getting buffer and buffer (something iwaizumi is very happy with), but he's broad now.

oikawa's chest has gotten fuller and his shoulders wider. he's not the willowy boy iwaizumi played volleyball with. tooru's grown into himself.

how iwaizumi reacts to all that?

Garroth finally realizes he’s in love with Laurance and Laurance gets up, says this is what he’s waited for since fifth grade, and rejects him. They get together a week later. Laurance had to make Garroth suffer for a week because Garroth liked Cadenza in middle school and was insufferable about it.
