Is a leader born or made?
The question we are trying to answer today is exactly what leadership development programs are centered around – is leadership a skill that can be nurtured or a trait that is part of one’s nature? Is a leader born or can you actually develop and make an individual into a leader? That is a question that most firms have struggled to answer. A good executive leadership program always tries to work on the premise that a balanced thought process is needed and that a leader is a combination of some internal traits as well as some skills that have been developed through interventions and initiatives.
Leaders are actually a factor of both nature and nurture, especially a transformational leader who is able to make a mark in the business as well as social landscape.  Let us take a look at both scenarios and understand what those might mean.
If we believe that a leader is born, we will be assuming that some of the qualities that a good leader needs, are fixed, unchanging and applicable in all situations. We will also be assuming that the person who becomes a leader is someone who we can identify immediately based on the traits they have and that those traits need to be developed further. However, in our VUCA world today, we must understand that such an assumption can be self-limiting and dangerous. It means that we are restricting our possibilities and also the option of being able to hire people who might not be demonstrating inherent leadership qualities immediately, but have the potential to be groomed into bigger roles.
If we think that a leader is made, our thought process is that no individual actually has any specific qualities that a leader is required to have. He or she needs to be developed and nurtured, and has to undergo initiatives which will then turn them into potential leaders. However, the challenge with this particular extreme is that we are then negating the critical aspect of underlying traits that makes a person unique and can possibly be utilized to scale them up further. It also means that we need to make large scale investments based on our own judgement of who we think is appropriate since we cannot rely on the inherent qualities they have.
As is evident, either approach cannot work in isolation from the other factor. Hence, knowing that being a leader means a healthy mix of existing qualities or attributes, and skills that have been provided through developmental initiatives, is what is important.
