Nuru (clocking out of this conversation): The odds of Varian confessing his "love" to you in such a fashion are a billion to one.

Hugo, turning to Nuru: I must go. My admirer calls me.

So y’all know those scenes where the princess to sings to the woodland creatures and has a Disney princess (tm) moment.

What if Hugo has one of those moments while on the road with team radical. Like he just disappears to get some firewoods or berries or something and he doesn’t come back for a bit and Varian goes to find him.

He searches through the forest till he hears singing. It sounds beautiful and oddly familiar so he follows it. Peering from behind a bush he sees the most beautiful sight. Hugo is singing to himself as he gathers supplies, his voice light, delicate and gentle in a way that Varian has never heard before. The setting sun catches on his glasses and hair that he must have taken down since he was alone.

A bird hears him and flies over. The bird starts to sing along and Hugo smiles at it. He lets the bird land on his finger and they sing back and forth for a bit.

Varian is mesmerized and in love and he leans a little further to see the scene and hear Hugo’s voice more clearly. He falls into the bush.

nuru forces everyone to go into town and be taken care of.

varian gets a haircut, which he really appreciates because having long hair reminds him of his villain arc + prison. (still pushing my long-tangled-haired villain varian agenda on you guys.)

nuru gets updated maps and a new lens for her telescope.

yong gets to sample a few tasty treats and make small talk with a bunch of people.

and hugo gets new glasses, which he hasn’t gotten in way too long. he blinks up at the trees, which actually have leaves again instead of green splotches, and realizes nuru has a little beauty mark on her cheek and multiple shades of gold in her eyes. and he can fully see how cute-yet-devious yong looks. and then he turns to varian. and. you can imagine how that’d go.

the word “promise” is probably always going to be a trigger for varian. ranging from comparatively-small things like broken agreements between people he thought he could be friends with (cass with the expo) to larger disappointments (rapunzel with investigating the rocks & saving their kingdom) and finally to that day when the world split in two and his father was maybe-dead and the guards were dragging him into that storm and rapunzel’s back was turned.

and then with the flower. rapunzel says “i promise” and he hears the rattling of the doors, the approaching guards, making him believe she was just stalling for time until they can come arrest him.

cassandra turning on them all. “we can’t promise she’s not going to hurt us.” and she does hurt them, most likely breaking varian’s ribs in the same way his robot broke hers.

and then quirin is lying on the ground, fingers still twitching from varian having to electrocute him, and when varian says “you’re gonna be okay, dad, i promise”, he doesn’t believe himself. he’s desperately trying to grab hold of all his misfortune and wrangle it into something that, just this once, could go his way.

and then there’s hugo, and all the lies he told when it didn’t matter to him, and all the lies he kept telling when it did. he’d probably slipped a promise in there somewhere, even if it was about something casual. it still got broken.

varian might not ever be able to fully trust people. and that’s heartbreaking.
